(Major Field) History and Time in 14th and 15th Century Texts (1377-1483)
OVERVIEW
I will be reading most texts in their entirety, but I will be focusing on moments in history when the need to enlist the figure of the past becomes particularly pressing, moments when the structures of authority seem open to question: alliances, coronations, usurpation, dynastic conflict, unpopular marriages. Therefore, I will be reading the chronicles with an eye to these moments, concentrating on instances where the present experiences crisis, calling into question the stability of the past and the nature of the future.
