  • John Lydgate 1370(?)-1450(?)
English poet, translator, and prose writer.
    INTRODUCTION
Lydgate was one of the most popular and prolific English poets of the fifteenth century. His works, many of which were commissioned by prominent personages, include poems written in the Chaucerian manner, such as the Complaint of the Black Knight (1400?) and the allegory The Temple of Glass (1403?). His translations include the Troy Book, The Fall of Princes, (1431-39), and The Siege of Thebes (1420?). He also wrote fables, devotional, philosophic, and occasional poems, and a prose work, The Serpent of Division (1422), about Caesar's wars and death. Lydgate's reputation has largely been overshadowed by Geoffrey Chaucer, and most modern critics fault his prolixity and prosaic style. Lydgate does however have admirers, including the poet Thomas Gray, who praised the carefulness of his phraseology and the smoothness of his verse.

JOHN LYDGATE c. 1370 - c. 1451), English poet, was born at the village of Lydgate, some 6 or 7 m. from Newmarket . It is, however, with the Benedictine abbey of Bury St Edmunds that he is chiefly associated. Probably he was educated at the school attached to the monastery, and in his Testament he has drawn a lively picture of himself as a typical orchard -robbing boy, who had scant relish for matins , fought, and threw creed and paternoster at the cock. He was ordained sub- deacon in 1389, deacon in 1393, and priest in 1397. These dates are valuable as enabling us to fix approximately the date of his birth, which must have occurred somewhere about 1370. Lydgate passed as a portent of learning, and, according to Bale , he pursued his studies not only at both the English universities but in France and Italy . Koeppel (see Laurents de Premier. / ait and John Lydgates Bearbeitungen von Boccaccios De Casibus, Munich , 1885) has thrown much doubt on this statement as regards Italy, but Lydgate knew France and visited Paris in an official capacity in 1426. Bale is also the authority for another assertion that figures in what has been aptly termed the poet's "traditional biography," viz. that Lydgate, on completing his own education, kept school for the sons of noblemen and gentlemen. This "traditional biography" prolongs his life to the year 1461, but it is quite improbable that he lived many years after 1446, when

John Lydgate was born in Suffolk and was ordained as a Benedictine monk at Bury St. Edmunds Abbey in 1397. He was prior of Hatfield Broad Oak in Essex from 1421-1432. Enjoying the patronage of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, the scholarly youngest son of Henry VI, Lydgate wrote numerous poem, many of which were derived from translations of French, Latin, and Italian works. The range of his work was extensive and included moral allegories, fables, saints' lives, and occasional poems. His major works include The Troy Book The Siege of Thebes The Temple of Glass Falls of Primes , and The Complaint of the Black Knight . His work was better regarded in the late medieval period than it is today. Vox ultima Crucis

    John Lydgate
Born at Lydgate, Suffolk, about 1370; d. probably about 1450. He entered the Benedictine abbey at Bury when fifteen and may have been educated earlier at the school of the Benedictine monks there and have been afterwards at the Benedictine house of studies at Oxford. It is possible, as Bale asserts, that he studied at both Oxford and Cambridge, and it is fairly certain that he travelled in France , and perhaps in Italy . He was ordained priest in 1397. Bale (Scriptorum Summarium) says he opened a school for sons of the nobility probably in the monastery of Bury. His verses seem to have been much in request by noble lords and ladies, and having been court poet he wrote a ballad for the coronation of Henry VI . For eleven years (1423-1434) he was prior of Hatfield Broadoak, but is said not to have busied himself much with his duties there. He then returned to Bury. At various times he received as rewards for his poetry some land and a pension. Many of these details of his career can only be vaguely asserted, but his poetic work is not vague. It is certain that he was a learned and industrious poet who wrote much verse on varied subject-matter. His poetry, however, though interesting from other points of view than the poetical, never rises much above mediocrity. A blight seemed at that period to have fallen upon poetry in

John Lydgate's Fall of Princes John Lydgate, a monk of Bury St. Edmunds, wrote the Fall of Princes for his patron, Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, between 1431 and 1438-9. The Fall is an adaptation of Laurent de Premierfait’s 1409 translation of Giovanni Boccaccio’s De casibus virorum illustrium , an account of the falls of great men throughout history. Spanning nine books and 36,365 lines of verse, it is Lydgate’s longest work. Its length seems to have prompted many scholars to focus more on the texts influenced by the Fall than on the Fall itself. Although it is an encyclopaedic work, Lydgate’s poem is also something of an undelved treasure trove, brimming with biblical, mythical, and historical characters. The works listed below constitute an introductory bibliography to Lydgate and the Fall . Some of the primary texts, such as Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy , are helpful sources for those who wish to have a better understanding of medieval beliefs concerning Fortune, beliefs which were strongly influenced by the ancient text. Others, such as Cavendish’s Metrical Visions and the Mirror for Magistrates , are later texts in the English de casibus tradition. This bibliography is taken from my research for my Mphil dissertation, which focused on the more ‘political’ aspects of the
