They Didn't Think It Could Happen In Their Church

by June Summers
Publisher: Global Strategic Resources, 2005 Fiction, Soft cover, 372 Pages, $13.95
ISBN # 0-9754214-8-4 http://www.globalstrategicresources.com/pg14.htm#new Although I found some valuable insights about cult behavior in this self-published novel, I would not recommend it for general reading. The author June Summers reports that she escaped from a cult 20 years ago. I assume that she belonged to a charismatic Christian church much like the one in her novel. Summers adopts a definition of cult as any religion that does not comply with a particular form of evangelical Christianity. Among her “signs” of a cult is emphasis on experience and emotion instead of scriptural truths In the story Penny, the main character in the novel, moves from her home in the Midwest to the Portland, Oregon area to try to find herself. She quits her job and has a conflict with her boyfriend who is dedicated to his golf career. He does not wish to relocate with her to Portland. In Oregon Penny encounters a lively Christian community in Grace Church. Mark, a man who speaks with an impediment that some women find irresistible, leads the independent church. Throughout the book the author writes Mark’s words as p w etty, spi

  • Introduction
Foreign Affairs (1984) is a Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel by American author Alison Lurie. Set mostly in London, it is the story of two American professors of English from an Ivy League university who spend several months in the capital city of England. Ostensibly, Vinnie Miner, an unmarried woman in her fifties who specializes in children's literature, and Fred Turner, a twenty-nine-year-old eighteenth-century specialist who has just separated from his wife, are in London to work on their academic research projects. However, during their stay, both are drawn into unexpected romantic relationships—Vinnie with an American tourist from Oklahoma and Fred with a glamorous English actress—that have very different consequences for each character. Lurie's witty comedy of manners plays with some of the cultural differences between England and America while spinning a tale that explores the illusions of love as well as the wisdom, joy, and sadness it may bring.

Alison
girlNameId = '10751'; Meaning: Its source is Alice, an English name meaning "Exalted nature." Languages: This girl's name is used in English and French. Nicknames: Alie and Allie Alternative Spellings: Allison Allyson and Alyson Variant Forms: Alisoun Alysoun Alisanne and Alysanne Popularity: The name Alison ranked 228th in popularity for females of all ages in a sample of 2000-2003 Social Security Administration statistics and 347th in popularity for females of all ages in a sample of the 1990 US Census. This name is highly rated in the 1990 U.S. Census popularity survey of all ages, but after 1960 does not appear in the state data listing the most popular baby names. Narrative: This originated as a surname, meaning in effect ''Alice's son.'' Generally, family names originated with a male ancestor, as the commonness of patronymics such as Johnson or Anderson attest. However, if a woman headed the household for any reason (such as, her ownership of the family property, the absence of a husband because of death or abandonment, etc.) notable exceptions evolved. Another example of such a surname is Madison , derived from either Maud or Madeline.
