ady Detectives . There were a significant number of detectives in Victorian-era fiction who were women; many more so than one would think. For the most part I have not given them separate entries. I've lumped them together like this for a couple of reasons. For one, I haven't read some of the stories in question; as with many of the other entries here, the stories and books were written so long ago that only one or two libraries own them, and those libraries won't lend the books out (not that I can blame themthe books are in some cases 130 years old, or more). Another reason is that the lady detectives simply aren't that distinctive. Each entry on this list has an intrinsic worth, I think; at least, I read them and am interested in them. But as with many of the male detective characters (see their entry above) many of the lady detectives are just not that interesting: Denver Doll was created by Edward L. Wheeler and appeared in Beadle's Half-Dime Library in 1882 and 1883. She is, alternatively, "the Detective Queen" and "the handsomest girl sport in the West." Somewhere in her late teens or early twenties, she is a very pretty frontier detective, the former leader of the "Red Shirts" and the current chief of a trio including Yakie Strauss (the Dutchman) and Little Bill Bethel. She's a crack shot and a shark at poker.
