Lowry was born in Wallasey , in the English county of Merseyside (previously Cheshire), and was educated at The Leys School and St Catharine's College Cambridge . By the time he graduated in 1931, the twin obsessions which would dominate his life—alcohol and literature—were firmly in place. Lowry was already well travelled, having sailed to the Far East as a deck hand on the Pyrrhus between school and university and made visits to America and Germany between terms. After Cambridge, Lowry lived briefly in London , existing on the fringes of the vibrant thirties literary scene and meeting Dylan Thomas , amongst others. Following this, he moved to

Ultramarine (1933), later reworked and published in final form in 1962. His reputation is founded on his second novel, Under the Volcano (1947), a subtle and complex study of the dissolution of an Englishman's character. Set in Mexico, the novel is highly autobiographical. Like his hero Geoffrey Firmin, Lowry was an alcoholic whose addiction all but destroyed his family life and caused him to seek peace in such disparate locales as the United States, British Columbia, and Mexico. Lowry's other works, all published posthumously, include Selected Poems (1962); two volumes of short stories, Hear Us O Lord from Heaven Thy Dwelling Place (1961) and Dark As The Grave Wherein My Friend Is Laid (1968); and a novel, Lunar Caustic See biography by G. Malcolm Lowry
born July 28, 1909, Birkhead, Cheshire, Eng.
died June 27, 1957, Ripe, Sussex
British novelist, short-story writer, and poet. In his youth Lowry rebelled against his conventional upbringing and shipped to China as a cabin boy; he later lived in France, the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Italy. His reputation rests on the novel Under the Volcano (1947), about the last desperate day of a dispirited alcoholic and former British consul in Mexico. Its juxtaposition of images of social decay and self-destructiveness was seen as a symbolic vision of Europe on the verge of World War II. Though critically praised, it received popular recognition only after Lowry's death at age 47, probably the result of alcoholism. document.writeln(AAMB2); Images and Media: More on "Malcolm Lowry" from the 32 Volume Lowry, (Clarence) Malcolm - English novelist, short-story writer, and poet whose masterwork is Under the Volcano (1947; reissued 1962). It was begun in 1936 and is redolent of that period, when the world itself seemed to be lurching toward self-destruction. novel - The novel, unlike the poem, is a commercial commodity, and it lends itself less than the materials of literary magazines to that specialized appeal called coterie, intellectual or elitist. It sometimes happens that books directed at highly cultivated audiences-like Ulysses, Finnegans Wake, and Djuna Barnes's Nightwood (1936)-achieve a wider response, sometimes because of their daring in the ...

(Clarence) Malcolm Lowry (1909-1957) English novelist, short story writer, and poet, who is best known for his book UNDER THE VOLCANO (1947), a 20th century classic. Like many of Lowry's publications, the novel is highly autobiographical. An alcoholic, Lowry spent his post- Volcano years drinking and planning a cycle of novels built around his masterwork. He lived from 1940 to 1954 in a primitive cabin in Dollarton, British Columbia, and then in Italy and England until his death. I wrote: in the dark cavern of our birth.
The printer had it tavern, which seems better:
But herein lies the subject of our mirth,
Since on the next page death appears and dearth.
So it may be that God's word was distraction,
Which to our strange type appears destruction,
Which is bitter.
('Strange Type', from Selected Poems of Malcolm Lowry Malcolm Lowry was born in Birkenhead, Chesire, England, as the son of Arthur Lowry, a wealthy cotton broker, who owned plantations in Egypt, Peru, and Texas. His grandfather from his mother's side was a Norwegian sea captain. At the age of sevent, Lowry went almost blind from a disorder of the corneas, but recovered his sight four years later after an operation. Like his three brothers, Lowry attended public boarding schools. He was educated at Caldicote School, Hertfordshire, and at the Leys school, Cambridge. At the age of fifteen, he won a championship in golf in junior series. Rebelling against his bourgeois upbringing, Lowry interrupted his academic studies, and run away to sea to work as a deckhand on a freighter bound for China and on a ship sailing to Oslo. One of Lowry's affairs in Norway was to meet the writer

Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano
No se puede vivir sin amar.
The novel can be read simply as a story which you can skip if you want. It can be read as a story you will get more out of if you don't skip. It can be regarded as a kind of symphony, or in another way as a kind of operaor even a horse opera. It is hot music, a poem, a song, a comedy, a farce, and so forth. It is superficial, profound, entertaining, and boring, according to taste. It is a prophecy, a political warning, a cryptogram, a preposterous movie.

Inside the Volcano: My Life with Malcolm Lowry came out in 2000. This book is by Jan Gabriel yes, Lowry's ex-wife and *the* fictional Yvonne from Under the Volcano. This is a very poetic and tragic account of her relationship with Lowry during the development of his masterpiece. It is as equally important as Pursued by Furies. I strongly recommend it to all Lowry fans. Are you looking for Pursued by Furies: A Life of Malcolm Lowry? This is Gordon Bowker's phenomenal and exhaustive biography of Malcolm Lowry first published in 1993. M alcolm Lowry wrote Under the Volcano. The book takes place on the Mexican Day of the Dead. I asked an English professor at Guelph if our class could study it but he acted insulted. "Who wants to read a book about a drunk?" But then again he'd never read it. Another professor told me about the "tradition."
