How might she reconcile her feelings towards the Johansen family with her feelings towards the German soldiers? What kind of dreams do you think Ellen and Annemarie will have, as they grow older? What other long term psychological effects might result from their childhood experiences? Why did non-Jewish families like the Johansen's want to help Jewish families and individuals like the Rosen's, while other families didn't care? What motivated young men and woman like Peter and Lise to risk their lives saving Jews while fighting the Nazi occupation of their country? Only 11 percent of the nearly 1.7 million European Jews under the age of sixteen in 1939 survived the Second World War. There were somewhere between ten thousand and one hundred thousand Jewish children who were hidden during the Holocaust, who were not caught and who survived

    Author interviews:
April 2004: Lois Lowry We're thrilled to have the opportunity to interview two-time Newbery medalist Lois Lowry this spring. This interview took close to three months. We started with the books that we most loved for example, Autumn Street and that helped us to concentrate our vision on Ms Lowry's later works. It has been an extraordinary pleasure to have Ms Lowry's ear for some time now and we hope that the interview will be an interesting intersection of her early works and her latest book, Messenger, which completes the trilogy begun by The Giver. DHBks: Let's start out with Anastasia and her family, particularly her mother, who is unflappable. She remains calm when Anastasia observes that mothers become disgusting when one turns 13. She endears herself to every mother on the planet when she describes herself as a lousy housekeeper. She hates lists. She saves cereal boxes to make a train for Sam, and doesn't care if he spills paint in the process. And she has the strength to tell Anastasia that it is okay to have a crush on a female gym teacher. Are you and Anastasia's mother kindred souls? LL: I think as writers we have the amazing opportunity to re-write our own experience. When my sister died (

Thoughts on Newbery: Lois Lowry Approves
January 19, 2008 I tend not to mention social events here because I worry about people feeling envious, left out, or suspicious that I’m being bought. But I must mention my Thursday lunch with Lois Lowry because in her blog post about it , she wrote, “… Two of them just back from serving on the Newbery Committee! and though of course they can’t describe their process of deliberation…at least I was able to tell them what a wonderful choice I thought they had made with this year’s winner. “ And now since I did mention the lunch, I might as well tell all. We were at the elegant Eleven Madison Park and the food was superb and beautiful. Lois is right that the beet salad was exquisite in presentation. I can’t comment on how it tasted as I had the excellent mushroom risotto followed by red snapper. (Boy, does this sound like a really bad restaurant review? That is another reason I don’t write about these events — I can’t do it well at all!) More important was the conversation. A charming and smart woman, Lois told an extremely amusing story about her stint as a National Book Award judge and others related to

    Lowry Updates
Teachers I have been trying to find time, here and there interspersed among other commitments, to write the answers to questions in an interview for Scholastic's TEACHER. And I'm just coming up on the several questions that deal with schools and teachers. Here's an example:
What concerns you about education today? What would you like to see change? What has changed for the better. If you could give a gift to teachers, what would it be?
I haven't answered those yet for Scholastic, but they are waiting; and in the meantime, today I got an email from a teacher in Oklahoma. Here is part of what she wrote me: One of my students had a very tough week because of his homelife. It has been a pretty heartbreaking week, and I came home tonight feeling pretty worn out emotionally and physically. I got on the computer and went to your site because my 23 fourth graders had so many questions about you. I ended up reading your speeches. Thank you for sharing them with everyone! “Bright Streets and Dark Paths” especially touched my heart. It was the encouragement I needed tonight. Thank you. I am going to quote your wise words in the last part of your speech, “Down those treacherous bright streets and the dark paths today’s children travel, they need our companionship, our respect, our outstretched hands.” I hope you don’t mind if I write them in red ink across my lesson plans for next week to remind me to keep doing all I can for them. Well, I'm gratified that she found something of value in one of my speeches. But much more: I am moved to be reminded of what teachers do, how they care, how they struggle, often—not just to drum the spelling words and math rules into those small heads, but to make a difference in their lives, to understand how tough some young lives are, to shape and mold and comfort and give hope along with knowledge.
