It's fun to write about Lois Lowry but not as much fun as it is to be with her. She's a witty, clever, interesting woman with lots of facets to her life. She's a great conversationalist, she knits, is an avid and eclectic reader and movie-goer, and besides that, she likes to play bridge and garden. She's an excellent cook and her cookbook collection is enormous and varied. Her home is full of bookshelves which, of course, are full of books and, since she has a great need for order, her books are carefully arranged with her own rather eccentric system with no apologies to Dewey. As a child whose father was in the military, she moved around a lot and spent the years of World War II with her mother's parents in central Pennsylvania before joining her father in post war Japan. You can find out more about that house and town in Pennsylvania for she used it as the setting for

My older sister, Helen, was very much like our mother: gentle, family-oriented, eager to please. Little brother Jon was the only boy and had interests that he shared with our father; together they were always working on electric trains and erector sets, and later, they always seemed to have their heads under the raised hood of a car. That left me in-between, and exactly where I wanted to be: on my own. I was a solitary child who lived in the world of books and my own imagination.

One Writer's Process: Lois Lowry
Whether writing about Annemarie Johansen helping to save her best friend from the Nazis in Copenhagen in 1943, or about the seemingly perfect world that Jonas begins to question after receiving his life assignment with the Giver, Lois Lowry seeks to explore in new, thought-provoking ways how each of us is linked in some way to one another.
"My books have varied in content and style," writes Lowry, "yet it seems that all of them deal, essentially, with the same general theme: the importance of human connections."
Readers familiar with her first book, A Summer to Die , will recall it as a highly fictionalized retelling of the early death of her sister, with Lowry relating in precise detail the emotional effects that the loss had on her and her family.
And although Number the Stars , her Newbery Award-winning novel, is set in a different culture and era, Lowry believes that she is trying to tell the same story: "that of the role that we humans play in the lives of our fellow beings."

Interview with Lois Lowry BookPage, 1993 This January Lois Lowry won the Newbery award for The Giver (Houghton Mifflin, $13.95; ages 11 and up). In my memory, never has there been such a delighted consensus from the children's book community, including of course, children. Many of these children became Lowry fans as they laughed their way through the ten novels she's written about Anastasia Krupnick (Houghton Mifflin, $13.45; Bantam, $3.25; ages 9 and up), one the best-loved middle grade heroines in children's books. I, myself, became a fan long ago when I cried over her first novel, Summer to Die (Houghton Mifflin, $13.45; Bantam, $3.50; ages 11 and up) written twenty years ago. I cheered her 1989 Newbery award for Number the Stars , (Houghton Mifflin, $12.70; Dell, $1.99; ages 10 and up) a novel about AnneMarie, a brave Dane who defends friendship by defying the Nazis during World War II. Whether through laughter or tears, historical or contemporary struggles, Lowry writes books that touch kids deeply. The Giver is a Newbery that will be read and loved. It's a book that will touch young adults in deep places and inspire meaningful discussion.
