Prize Work: Lord Weary's Castle ; Pulitzer Prize: 1947 Poetry The Dolphin ; Pulitzer Prize: 1974 Poetry Robert Lowell (born 1917, died 1977) was an American author. Author Biography - Robert Lowell was born in 1917 into one of Boston's oldest and most prominent families. He attended Harvard College for two years before transferring to Kenyon College, where he studied poetry under John Crowe Ransom and received an undergraduate degree in 1940. He took graduate courses at Louisiana State University where he studied with Robert Penn Warren and Cleanth Brooks. His first and second books, Land of Unlikeness (1944) and Lord Weary's Castle Partly in response to his frequent breakdowns, and partly due to the influence of such younger poets as W. D. Snodgrass and Allen Ginsberg, Lowell in the mid-fifties began to write more directly from personal experience, and loosened his adherence to traditional meter and form. The result was a watershed collection, Life Studies (1959), which forever changed the landscape of modern poetry, much as Eliot's

Some like this one: AFTER THE SURPRISING CONVERSIONS
September twenty-second, Sir: today
I answer. In the latter part of May,
To be more sensible. A gentleman
Of more than common understanding, strict
In morals, pious in behavior, kicked
Against our goad. A man of some renown,
An useful, honored person in the town,
He came of melancholy parents; prone
To secret spells, for years they kept alone-
His uncle, I believe, was killed of it: Good people, but of too much or little wit. I preached one Sabbath on a text from Kings; He showed concernment for his soul. Some things In his experience were hopeful. He Would sit and watch the wind knocking a tree And praise this countryside our Lord has made. A shilling on the doorsill; though a thirst For loving shook him like a snake, he durst Not entertain much hope of his estate In heaven. Once we saw him sitting late Behind his attic window by a light That guttered on his Bible; through that night He meditated terror, and he seemed Beyond advice or reason, for he dreamed

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Lowell, Robert Lowell, Robert (1917-1977), was a leading American poet. Lowell often is considered a "confessional" poet because he used material from his private life to generate an image of modern culture. His poetry dramatizes the pain and tenderness of personal relationships, and his belief that society has been distorted by its overemphasis on worldly things. Lowell received the 1947 Pulitzer Prize for poetry for Lord Weary's Castle (1946) and the 1974 Pulitzer Prize for poetry for The Dolphin (1973).

Robert Lowell, Flannery O'Connor, and the FBI
Robert Lowell's Day by Day was published thirty years ago this month, and shortly afterward won the National Book Critics Circle award hence this insightful essay by Adam Kirsch over at Critical Mass , the offical blog of the NBCC. Kirsch argues that, had Lowell lived more than a mere month beyond the book's publication, the volume might have come to seem a "modest, transitional work," and he laments that the rhetorical question near the end of the collection "Yet why not say what happened?" became "an ars poetica for a whole generation of poets," an "ethic of accuracy, based on pity for the transitory world."
Among his many grand accomplishments, Robert Lowell was responsible for introducing his publisher, Robert Giroux, to another Southern writer: Flannery O'Connor. Giroux recalled this at a tribute to O'Connor hosted by PEN American Center; his words were later published by PEN America . That introduction took place in 1949, the year that Lowell and O'Connor met at

Robert Traill Spence Lowell:
The Relief of Lucknow
On, that last day in Lucknow fort!
We knew that it was the last;
That the enemy's lines crept surely on,
And the end was coming fast. To yield to that foe meant worse than death;
And the men and we all worked on;
It was one day more of smoke and roar,
And then it would all be done. There was one of us, a corporal's wife,
A fair, young, gentle thing,
Wasted with fever in the siege, And her mind was wandering. She lay on the ground, in her Scottish plaid, And I took her head on my knee; "When my father comes hame frae the pleugh," she said, "Oh, then please waken me." She slept like a child on her father's floor, In the flecking of woodbine shade, When the house-dog sprawls by the open door, And the mother's wheel is stayed. It was smoke and roar and powder-stench, And hopeless waiting for death;

Quaker Cemetery Information The first Quaker, or Friends, Burial Ground occupied one acre near the south end of Maxcey's Pond and was used for interments from about 1711 until 1760. A second burial site, located at Quaker and Madaket roads, was added in 1730. There are only 56 markers to account for the thousands of Quakers buried in the two cemeteries. Quakers disapproved of the use of headstones, considering them idolatrous (graves were most likely set off by unmarked fieldstones), although nineteenth-century sects, such as the Gurneyites and Hicksites, did use gravestones. The unstoned field has inspired at least one poem, Robert Lowell's "Quaker Graveyard in Nantucket." The NHA library contains correspondence dating from 1910 concerning the use of the burial ground.
