Yet I make no apology for it; for it was a case of love at first sight. Scanning, one evening, in Tokyo, the map of Japan, in a vague, itinerary way, with the look one first gives to the crowd of faces in a ballroom, my eye was caught by the pose of a province that stood out in graphic mystery from the western coast. It made a striking figure there, with its deep-bosomed bays and its bold headlands. Its name, it appeared, was Noto; and the name too pleased me. eBook Publisher: EbooksLib Fictionwise Release Date: June 2006 Available eBook Formats [Secure Mobipocket/Microsoft Reader - What's this?

He is best known for his belief that there are canals on the surface of Mars and that these canals provide evidence for the existence of intelligent life there. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard University, Lowell travelled in Japan and Korea from 1877 until 1893 and later wrote books about East Asia. In 1894 he founded and became director of the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Arizona. From 1902 until his death he was non-resident Professor of Astronomy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He predicted the discovery of Pluto , which astronomers first observed in 1930 at the Lowell Observatory. Lowell's writings include

Mars moves through our skies in its stately dance, distant and enigmatic, a world awaiting exploration People on Earth have always been fascinated with the idea of life on Mars. Ancient people could see Mars as a pale reddish light in the nighttime sky. They believed that it was stained with the blood of fallen warriors. Once telescopes were invented people had a better view of the planet, but many still thought it was inhabited. Patterns of straight lines could be seen on the surface. To some these were evidence of water canals dug into the ground by hard-working Martians. The notion lingered for decades in the public imagination.

    The canals of Mars-historical note
Lowell's Drawings of Canals It was at Lowell that the only consistent observations of canals, originally termed canale by Secchi (1858) and Schiaparelli (1877), were made. The Encyclopedia Brittanica 11th Edition (1910) doubts their being waterways, noting that their breadth of many miles made it absurd to to call them canals, but believed that the oft-noted seasonal changes were evidence of blue-green vegetation. Lowell maintained that the linear features were indeed of artificial origin. Here is the account: "Professor Lowell's theory is supported by so much evidence of different kinds that his own exposition should be read in extenso in Mars and its canals (1906) and Mars as the abode of life (1909). In order, however, that his views may be adequately presented here, he has kindly supplied the following summary in his own words: "Owing to inadequate atmospheric advantages generally, much misapprehension exists as to the definiteness with which the surface of Mars is seen under good conditions. In steady air the canals are perfectly distinct lines, not unlike the Fraunhofer ones of the Spectrum, pencil lines or gossamer filaments acording to size. All the observers at Flagstaff concur in this. The photographs of them taken there also confirm it up to the limit of their ability. Careful experiments by the same observers on artificial lines show that if the canals had breaks amounting to 16 mi. across, such breaks would be visible. None are; while the lines themselves are thousands of miles long and perfectly straight (

The Story of the Suez Canal,
From All the Year Round , January 8, 1876
Edinburgh Review demonstrated with minute and elaborate pains the falsity of the data on which the promoters rested. And a more amusing half-hour's entertainment could not be desired than the perusal of this Edinburgh Review article for January, 1856, in which it is proved triumphantly that the canal must fill up, and that no harbor or pier could be made. The article argued it all out with a formidable array of facts. Lord Palmerston's opposition is well known, but the shower of articles in the leading journal which ridiculed, prophesied, and confuted, are now well-nigh forgotten. It would take long to set out the story of the opposition, coldness, and rebuffs which this intrepid projector was now to encounter. His own sovereign was indifferent; but in England the hostility was almost rancorous. It was repeated again, in and out of Parliament, that even if the canal were ever made, it would be no more than a "stagnant ditch"; and this phrase became a favorite one with the wiseacres, who knew nothing and fancied that they understood. Stephenson, in the House of Commons, renewed his condemnation of the whole scheme, and in contemptuous style repeated the favorite phrase, "stagnant ditch." Never faltering, our projector brought out his company, and, after untiring speechifyings, pamphlets, repasts, etc., opened the subscription. Nearly eight millions were found. In 1859 he started with the work. His faithful friend the Pasha stood by him gallantly, and supplied him with
