U.S. astronomer. He was born into a distinguished Boston family. In the 1890s he built a private observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz., to study Mars . He championed the now-abandoned theory that intelligent inhabitants of a dying Mars had constructed a planetwide system of irrigation. He thought that the so-called canals of Mars ( see Mars, canals of ) were bands of cultivated vegetation dependent on this irrigation. Lowell's theory, long vigorously opposed, was finally put to rest by images received from the U.S. Mariner spacecraft. His prediction of a planet beyond Neptune and his organization of a search for it contributed to the discovery of Pluto in 1930. document.writeln(AAMB2); Images and Media: More on "Percival Lowell" from Britannica Concise Mars, canals of - Apparent systems of straight-line markings on the surface of Mars, now known to be an illusion caused by the chance alignment of large craters and other surface features. Lowell, Percival (1855-1916)
Born into a wealthy and well-known Bostonian family, Lowell gave no early indication of the obsession that would come to dominate his life and create an enduring romance involving extraterrestrial canals (see Mars, canals ) and an advanced Martian civilization (see Mars, life on ). At Harvard, where for 24 years his brother was president, he showed a talent for mathematics and even presented an astronomical address entitled "The Nebular Hypothesis". But following his graduation, he devoted the next 17 years to family business concerns and three extended stays in the Orient. He served as Foreign Secretary and Counselor to the first Korean diplomatic mission and, during his time in Korea and Japan, wrote four books on Eastern thought and culture. Then, for some reason which is not entirely clear, he caught the Mars bug. Perhaps he had been inspired by reading Flammarion 's popular treatise on the planet. Or, it may have been Schiaparelli 's work that influenced him directly. Certainly, as early as 1890, he had begun to correspond with William

He called them canali , an Italian word meaning channels . The canali were also observed by Lowell who concluded they were canals built by intelligent beings. The canals supposedly supplied water from the melting polar caps to a desert world. In his book " Mars as the Abode of Life ", published in 1908, Percival Lowell presented his theory that Mars' canals were built by intelligent beings.

Percival Lowell was born on March 13, 1855 in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1872, he began studying at Harvard University, from which institution he graduated with a B.A. degree in 1876. He also received honorary LL.D degrees from Amherst College in 1907 and Clark University in 1909.
Prior to 1883, Lowell devoted himself to business interests. Between 1883 and 1893, Lowell traveled throughout the Far East. He lived in Japan from time to time during this period, and wrote several books about his experiences in this area. He also served as the counselor and foreign secretary to the 1883 Special Mission from Korea to the United States, which was the first diplomatic group sent from Korea to any western power. Following this mission, Lowell stayed in Korea as a guest of the government for several months.
Lowell was also a prolific writer. In addition to his articles and lectures, he published many books: A The Land of the MorningCalm The Soul of the Far East Noto Occult Japan Mars The Annals of Lowell Observatory (Vol. 1, 1898, Vol. 2, 1900)

    Percival Lowell's Quest
P ercival Lowell was born into an aristocratic Boston family, studied mathematics at Harvard, and made a fortune in business. After traveling for ten years to the Far East as a travel writer and serving as a foreign secretary, he settled down to the serious pursuit of astronomy. Lowell had become interested in studying what he thought were artificial canals on Mars, and in 1894 established the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Mars wasn't the only planet that interested him, and in 1905, he began a search for the ninth planet. Besides being able to apply his mathematical skills, Lowell had his own observatory at his disposal, something John Couch Adams had lacked when he predicted Neptune's position. Lowell's staff conducted a photographic survey of the sky, with Lowell's calculations thrown in to help narrow the search. Lowell initially kept his search a secret, so that others might not steal his project. However, when the extreme difficulties of finding a planet became evident, Lowell was no longer worried about an opportunistic astronomer taking the glory, and by 1908 was publicly calling his elusive quarry "Planet X." By 1908, William Pickering was also conducting a search for what he called "Planet O." Pickering had helped Lowell set up his observatory, though he became rather critical of Lowell's ideas that Mars held intelligent life.
