H.P. Lovecraft:
Against the World,
Against Life
Michel Houellebecq
With an introduction by Stephen King. "Those who love life do not read. Nor do they go to the movies, actually. No matter what might be said, access to the artistic universe is more or less entirely the preserve of those who are a little fed up with the world." In this prescient work, Michel Houellebecq, the author of the novels Platform and Elementary Particles "Michel Houellebecq's essay H.P. Lovecraft: Against the World, Against Life is a remarkable blending of critical insight, fierce partisanship, and sympathetic biographya kind of scholarly love letter, maybe even the world's first truly cerebral mash note. The question is whether or not the subject rates such a rich and unexpected burst of creativity in what is ordinarily a dull-as-ditchwater, footnote-riddled field of work. Does this long-dead, pulp-magazine Johnson deserve such a Boswell? Houellebecq argues that H.P. Lovecraft does, that he matters a great deal even in the twenty-first century. As it happens, I think he could not be more right." -Stephen King, from the Introduction

This has been bubbling for a while, and I think I found an entry in it.
I'm a big fan of H.P. Lovecraft.
I've long said that a good movie transcends plot- just a clever phrase that sprung to mind after the first time I saw "Psycho". I was about 19, but I knew every plot point to the movie, because... well, I live in America and watch tv. "Psycho" has turned into one of those classic stories that get parodied and referenced by everyone; a cultural touchstone you can use to reference something quickly. So nothing in "Psycho" was really a surprise. But it still scared the hell out of me. Because Hitchcock had built the mood, and the drive, so well that it didn't matter whether I knew from the first frame that the main character I was seeing would be dead before the film was half over, and that her killer was Anthony Perkins' "mother" personality. Big whoop. The surprise twist ending isn't what makes that movie great. It's the atmosphere.
Lovecraft is the same way. 9 times out of 10, his stories have a twist ending. Sometimes the entire final paragraph is in surprised italics, with an exclamation point driving the surprise home! Sometimes it's just the last sentence, or phrase. But the twist gets saved for the very end. And 99 times out of a hundred, you can see that twist coming from miles away. Hell, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" is one of his longest stories, nearly novel length, and I saw the twist coming about a quarter of the way through. And, as with Hitchcock, that isn't the point, and it isn't what makes his stories good.

March 15, 1937, Providence), American author of fantastic and macabre short novels and stories, one of the 20th-century masters of the Gothic tale of terror. "Lovecraft was interested in science from childhood, but lifelong poor health prevented him from attending college. He made his living as a ghostwriter and rewrite man and spent most of his life in seclusion and poverty. His fame as a writer increased after his death. "From 1923 on, most of Lovecraft's short stories appeared in the magazine Weird Tales . His Cthulhu Mythos series of tales describe ordinary New Englanders' encounters with horrific beings of extraterrestrial origin. In these short stories, Lovecraft's intimate knowledge of New England's geography and culture is blended with an elaborate original mythology. His other short stories deal with similarly terrifying phenomena in which horror and morbid fantasy acquire an unexpected verisimilitude. I. INTRODUCTION T HE OLDEST With this foundation, no one need wonder at the existence of a literature of cosmic fear. It has always existed, and always will exist; and no better evidence of its tenacious vigour can be cited than the impulse which now and then drives writers of totally opposite leanings to try their hands at it in isolated tales, as if to discharge from their minds certain phantasmal shapes which would otherwise haunt them. Thus Dickens wrote several eerie narratives; Browning, the hideous poem Childe Roland; Henry James, The Turn of the Screw; Dr. Holmes, the subtle novel Elsie Venner; F. Marion Crawford, The Upper Berth and a number of other examples; Mrs. Charlotte Perkins Gilman, social worker, The Yellow Wall Paper; whilst the humorist, W. W. Jacobs, produced that able melodramatic bit called The Monkey's Paw.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft An HP Lovecraft Biography The finest modern master of weird fiction since Poe, Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) had less than auspicious origins. Born in Rhode Island, where he spent most of his forty-six years, Lovecraft was only two when his father died in a mental home, and he himself was none too robust as a child. Due to "headaches" and other ailments, Lovecraft missed a lot of school, and only managed to complete two-and-a-half years of high school (where he discovered Poe and developed a lifelong interest in the sciences) before a "nervous collapse" forced him to withdraw. Read more about H.P. Lovecraft ... Lovecraft's Mythos Early in his writing career, just after World War I, H.P. Lovecraft recognized that, in an increasingly technological world based on science, the old horror story themes (ghosts, witches, vampires, werewolves, demons, and the like) just wouldn't do any longer. For, by the 1920's, many readers had become too realistic, too skeptical, to "believe" in them anymore. So something new was needed. Some kind of hybrid supernatural tale combining eerie chills with scientific plausibility. And that's exactly what Lovecraft came up with in his "Mythos" stories, many of which (between the 1920's and 1930's) first appeared in the now legendary pulp magazine WEIRD TALES.

    H.P. Lovecraft: An Appreciation
As a lad, my introduction to proper literature came via the works of Howard Phillips (H.P.) Lovecraft (b. 1890.) I had been reading Marvel Comics since the late 1960s (initially they were read to me), and as the 60s became the 70s, the Marvel team reacted to the counter-culture explosion by pushing the fringes of comic book artistry. Initially a fan of Spider-Man , I was dazzled by the newer, more obscure Marvel titles like Man-Thing Howard the Duck Werewolf By Night and Omega the Unknown , some of these created and penned by groundbreaking writer Steve Gerber , and sometimes featuring full pages of graphic text without images. For Marvel, this was a revolution, and I excitedly rode the wave with them.
