By Paul Stuart 11 October 2003 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author Socialist Party (PSOE) Mayor Juan Caballero, in the village of Barranco de Viznar near Granada in southwest Spain, has given his support for the beginning of legal proceedings to secure a permit for the excavation of a mass grave located in a nearby ravine at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. On July 16, 1936, in order to overturn the Popular Front government led by the liberal president Manuel Azana, Franco led a military uprising from Spanish Morocco. Workers organisations responded by forming rank-and-file antifascist militias. Franco called on all military garrisons to rise up against the Republic. In those areas seized by the fascists they enforced a policy of systematic mass murder of political opponents. Eyewitnesses in Viznar described how every night during three years of civil war, truckloads of prisoners were taken up to the site, shots would be heard and the trucks returned empty. Second letter to Federico Garcia Lorca
Dear Lorca, When I translate one of your poems and I come across words I do not understand, I always guess at their meanings. I am inevitably right. A really perfect poem (no one yet has written one) could be perfectly translated by a person who did not know one word of the language it was written in. A really perfect poem has an infinitely small vocabulary. It is very difficult. We want to transfer the immediate object, the immediate emotion to the poem - and yte the immediate always has hundreds of its own words clinging to it, short-leved and tenacious as barnacles. And it is wrong to scrape them off and substitute others. A poet is a time mechanic not an embalmer. The words around the immediate shrivel and decay like flesh around the body. No mummy-sheet of tradition can be used to stop the process. Objects, words must be led across time not preserved against it. I yell "Shit" down a cliff at the ocean. Even in my lifetime the immediacy of that word will fad. It will be dead as "Alas." But if I put the real cliff and the real ocean into the poem, the word "Shit" will ride along with them, travel the time-machine until cliffs and oceans disappear. Most of my friends like words too well. They set them under the blinding light of the poem and try to extract every possible connotation from each of them, every temporary pun, every direct or indirect connection - as if a word could become an object by mere addition of consequences. Others pick up words from the streets, from their bars, from their offices and display them proudly in their poems as if they were shouting, "See what I have collected from the American language. Look at my butterflies, my stamps, my old shoes!" What does one do with all this crap?

  • Blood Wedding , completed in 1932, premiered in Madrid in 1933. Its popular success was such that Lorca was able to support himself from proceeds stemming from his writing for the first time. Its success also demonstrates the degree to which large Spanish audiences, by 1933, were highly receptive to the innovations in theater and literature that had been developing since the turn of the century. The play incorporates song, chant, poetry, music, and rhythm, and its action and sets are highly symbolic and stylized. These nonrealistic and antinaturalistic techniques capitalized on drama as a live event. As opposed to a play whose actions and sets seemed exactly like things in everyday life, Lorca's audience witnessed the stage exploited for all of its sensate and dramatic potentialities. While some argue that the play treats certain universal themes, others disagree with this point of view, seeing it instead as a veiled criticism of certain sectors of Spanish society. On the surface

Federico Garcia Lorca
Garcia Lorca was a spanish poet active in the 20's and 30's. Often described as the poet's poet. As far as ideologies he wasn't an anarchist but he had an inherent connection and sympathy for oppressed peoples (possibly because he was a homosexual in catholic spain). a He especially demonstrates his radicalism with the book Poet in the City where he condemns capitalist consumerist NY, and expresses outrage at the situations of oppressed communities from african-americans to spanish peasants (possibly the reason he died). At the outbreak of the fascist insurrection he was srrested after a month of hiding, held for 3 days, then taken to the village outskirts and executed in the middle of the night. His body was never found.

    Poet Playwright
Federico Garcia Lorca was one of the most critically acclaimed Spanish poets of the 20th century, famous not only for his poems and plays, but also as an early martyr of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). His reputation as a poet was secured in the 1920s with the publication of Libra de Poemas (1921) and Primer Romancero Gitano (1928). In the 1930s, after a brief time in the United States and Cuba, he gained even more recognition for his plays, especially what has been called his "earth trilogy" (or "rural trilogy"), Bodas de Sangre Blood Wedding Yerma (1934) and Le Casa de Bernarda Alba The House of Bernarda Alba ). Shortly after he finished the last of the trilogy, he was arrested by nationalists who supported General Francisco Franco and executed without a trial. Although his work was not overtly political, Lorca had incurred the wrath of the fascist Escuadra Negra ("Black Squadron") because of his leftist leanings and, apparently, his homosexuality. Lorca was buried in a mass grave, believed to be near the village of Barranco de Viznar, in Granada, and his works remained officially banned in Spain until 1971. In 2003 it was announced that his body would be exhumed and reburied. His other works include the poems

Born into a family of minor, but wealthy, landowners in the small village of Fuente Vaqueros Granada , Garca Lorca was a precocious child, although he did not excel at school. In 1909, his father moved the family to the city of Granada Andalusia where in time he became deeply involved in local artistic circles. His first collection of prose pieces, Impresiones y paisajes , was published in 1918 to local acclaim but little commercial success. Associations made at Granada's Arts Club were to stand him in good stead when he moved in to the famous Residencia de estudiantes in Madrid . At the School of Philosophy of the University of Madrid (current-day Universidad Complutense de Madrid ) he would befriend Luis Bu±uel and Salvador Dal , among many others who were or would become influential artists in Spain.
