Garcia Lorca was born on June 5, 1898, in Fuente Vaqueros near the Spanish city of Granada into a wealthy family. He attended college in Madrid, and early on decided he was going to be a writer. Through recitals of his poetry he became well known even before the publication of his Book of Poems when he was 23. Many of his poems were strongly influenced by Spanish gypsy songs and the rhythms of flamenco music. These songs, known as

Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936)
Federico Garcia Lorca, Spain's greatest modern poet and playwright, was born June 5, 1898 at Fuentevaqueros in the Spanish province of Granada. He began writing poems in his late teens, reciting many of them in the local cafes. In 1919 he left to study law at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid. There he met and became friends with film director Luis Bunuel and painter Salvador Dali, among other Spanish notables of his generation. Lorca came to national prominence in 1927 when his play Mariana Pineda was first staged. His initial book of poems Gypsy Ballads was published the following year. During a trip abroad, which also took him to England and Cuba, Lorca spent nine months in New York City beginning in June of 1929. His poems of that period were later collected in the volume entitled Poet In New York. In 1931 Spain became a Republic which gave hope to many, Lorca included, that Spain's standard of living would be improved, its lliteracy reduced and its culture more widely disseminated. Lorca became director of a student theater company which toured small villages and in the face of harassment by Fascist partisans presented the Spanish classics to the peasants. His first great play, the rural tragedy

Federico García Lorca was born in Fuente Vaqueros, Granada on the 5th of June, 1898 and died the 19th of August, 1936. His life spanned the years between the Year of Disaster and the Spanish Civil War which ultimately victimized him. He travelled throughout Spain and America, principally Argentina, living and writing some of the most beautiful poetry ever written. His poetry has been translated into a dozen languages and his name is known worldwide. His personal life is the subject of much debate now, relating to his tendencies and friends. This page is dedicated to his poetry, written by him for us to enjoy instead of dissecting his personality. Lorca's poetry and plays combine elements of Andalusion folklore with sophisticated and often surrealistic poetic techniques, cut across all social and educational barriers. Works include: Thus Five Years Pass The Public Dona Rosita . He is toted to have succeeded in the creation of a viable poetic idiom for the stage, superior to the works of his contemporaries, Yeats, Eliot and Claudel. August 9, 1936, Falangist soldiers dragged the Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca into a field, shot him and tossed his body into an unmarked grave... Franco's government tried to obliterate Lorca's memory. His books were prohibited, his name forbidden.

Martyr of the Spanish Civil War
Frederico Garcia Lorca was one of the great Spanish writers and artists of the 20th Century. In his short lifetime he produced a wide variety of novels, short stories, poetry as well as paintings, drawings and even musical compositions.
He influenced such politically disparate artists as the poet Neruda and the painter Dali
On August 19, 1936, at the age of 38, Lorca was beaten to death by Franco's falangists along with several other 'disappeared' political opponents of Franco.
While his homosexuality was known even then, his fascist assassins used this to make his assassination look like a bit of 'rough trade' gone wrong,(see Why Lorca Was Murdered ) the real reason for his death was his outspoken defense of the Republic and his criticisms of monarchism, Catholicism and Fascism.

Life and Works:

Spanish poet dramatist, musician, amateur, and theatrical director, a talented artist and a member of the “Generation of 1927”, a group of writers who advocated avant-gardism in literature. Federico García Lorca is the most well-known modern poet in Spain. Perhaps because of the difficulties in translating poetic subtleties into other languages he may be better known for his plays in Britain and elsewhere. His murder by the Nationalists at the start of the Spanish civil war brought sudden international fame, accompanied by an excess of political rhetoric which led a later generation to question his merits; after the inevitable slump, his reputation has recovered (largely with a shift in interest to the less obvious works). He must now be bracketed with Antonio Machado as one of the two greatest poets Spain has produced this century, and he is certainly Spain's greatest dramatist since the Golden Age. Federico García Lorca was born the 5th. June, 1898, in Fuente Vaqueros, an Andalucian village near Granada. Lorca was the son of Federico García Rodriguez a landowner whose fortunes rose and fell with the sugar industry and his wife, Vicenta Lorca Romero, who had briefly been a school-teacher. The family home, the Huerta de San Vicente, is now a museum house.

Lorca's approach to poetry combined traditional and modern forms and ideas. His struggle with his identity and the modern world permeates his work, and finds its most critically admired expression in Poet in New York His books include Poet in New York, Gypsy Ballads , and the play Blood Wedding. Lorca's first theatrical production, The Butterfly's Evil Spell (1920), opened at the Eslava Theater in Madrid. Although the show closed after only one night, it gave Lorca his first taste of theatrical fame. He published his first book of poems in 1921, and seven years later, his book of poetry Romancero Gitano or The Gypsy Ballads made him famous throughout Spain. The public soon labeled Lorca as the "Gypsy poet", which displeased Lorca, and perhaps partly to dispel this myth, he moved to New York in 1929 to study English at Columbia University where he came into contact with amateur theatre groups and professional repertory companies. The trip also inspired a book of poetry, Poet in New York , which was published posthumously. Lorca returned to Spain in 1931 and formed his own theatre company. Composed mostly of students, "La Barraca" toured the countryside giving free performances of the Spanish classics, including the works of Lope de Vega , and Miguel de Cervantes. The company also produced the three "rural tragedies" on which Lorca's theatrical reputation rests.

Washington Irving People - Federico Garcia Lorca Revolutionary (1898 - 1936) Federico Garcia Lorca is not only Spain's most universal poet, but he is also a universally recognised symbol of Spain - and especially Andalucia - itself. His poems paint a vivid and intrinsically poetic portrait of this fascinating region, with its stark landscapes of olive groves and fig trees, its moonlit nights among whitewashed walls and Moorish towers, its bullfighters and, above all, its gypsies with their free-roaming ways and fierce codes of living and loving. The fact that Lorca was summarily executed at the onset of the Spanish Civil War has to some extent increased his fame, but the reverse side of the coin is that the political implications of the tragedy have eclipsed his worth as one of the 20th century's most brilliant and innovative poets. Born near Granada in 1898 to a prosperous farming family, Lorca was strongly influenced by his cultivated mother, who taught him to play the piano and sing, two skills which he put to good use later in life. During his student years in Madrid he made friends with Surrealist luminaries such as Salvador Dali and pioneer movie-maker Luis Buñuel, using their often outrageous techniques in his own work, but without compromising his own childlike, ingenuous style, full of lyrical freshness and spontaneity.

Garcia Lorca - Literature
Description of the Art Work
Garcia Lorca is one of the premier literary figures, not only in Spain, but throughout the world. His work consists of various novels, short stories, and poetry as well as painting and drawing.
Description of incident
On August 19, 1936, Lorca was beaten and assassinated. Though it is known that the order was given by Ramon Ruiz Alonso, under whose command he was acting remains a mystery. He was accused of subversive activity, however evidence today suggests that it was a hate crime in response to his homosexuality.
Results of incident
His entire body of work remained censored until Franco's death in 1975. This did not, however, prevent him from becoming one of the most widely read writers in the world.
