One of the culinary advantages to living in Paradise is a unique meal called loco-moco. My Dad would drive to Zippy's restaurant at least once a week to order loco-moco for breakfast. It's a Hawaiian standard if you're hungry for something ono (delicious). This favorite island dish was invented in 1949 in the plantation town of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. According to local legend, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Inouye, owners of a small cafe called the Lincoln Grill came up with loco-moco as something filling and affordable for hungry teens who hung out there. The Inouyes piled two scoops of rice into a saimin bowl then added a hamburger patty and fried egg. Then the piece de resistance: they topped it off with a generous serving of brown gravy over everything. The teenage customers came up with the name. Loco means crazy in Hawaiian pidgin. And moco rhymed and sounded

American poetry is an amalgam of various idioms, customs of speech and dictions that comprise the American poetic language. Although we write in English, it is the unique inspissation of dictions and nationalities that vary from North to South to East to West that distinguishes American poetic form from British poetry. I am an "American Poet" because I am an American. When you consider your own "tradition," do you think primarily of American poets? My pre Columbian ethnicity plays a major role in my writing as it is with Tommer and Ellison. It is like wearing an invisible bow tie that only I am very fond of. However, it is not what I, as a poet, purposely write about. Those poets that do so, are writing about a nationality, promoting some exclusive, fictive ethnicity to attain recognition. Which historic poets do you consider most responsible for generating distinctly American poetics? Whitman, of course. Since the country was founded, Whitman was the first American artist to break tradition with the seduction of the grand European style. Since then, the American poem has given birth to such poets as Stevens, Williams, Pound, Bishop, Ginsberg, Hughes, Sexton, O'Hara, Ashbery, Koch, and David Shapiro. Let us not forget Anne Bradstreet (Dudley), C.1612-1672, whose poems are derivative and formal, but often realistic and genuine.

His comedy show is a fresh, witty revue using musical parodies to poke fun at today's topics, fads, attitudes and people. It has earned him the vote of "favorite entertainer" year after year. His popularity in Hawaii is due not only to the fact that he is genuinely funny, but also because he produces a completely new show every year to keep his material fresh and current. Proclaimed the Portuguese Prince of Hawaiian comedy, De Lima began his show business career before a group of his peers in a kindergarten class. It seems that young Frank was committed to entertain from the very beginning. De Lima is a quarter Portuguese, a quarter Hawaiian, with a pinch of Irish, Scottish, English, Spanish, French, and Chinese tossed into his island genealogical stew. Appearing on stage in the role of an equal opportunity insultor, De Lima shoots from the lip with a rapid fire zinging of multi-racial quips labeled by locals as "Portagee" jokes. Surprising to many people, De Lima actually began his professional career as a singer, not as a comic. But he has indeed successfully married his serious singing talent to his gift for comic satire. Biography Larry Fagin was born in 1939. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.A. in English Literature, and did graduate work at the Gutenberg Institute in Mainz, Germany. From 1971-1976 he was co-director of the St. Mark's Poetry Project in New York City, and he edited a poetry magazine, Adventures in Poetry , during this time. He founded the Danspace project and directed Danspace from 1975-1980. He has been a faculty member at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado, since 1975 and directed the Naropa Poetics program from 1982-1984. He has taught poetry in the public schools for many years, and since 1972 has been poetry consultant in Brooklyn's District 22. On Thursday June 7, 2007 a Los Angeles Jury awarded Capt. Frank Lima $3.75 million dollars. It all started in June 2004 when Capt. Lima supervised the training of a female recruit, Ms. Melissa B. Kelley. Applying the same standards as he would to male recruits, Capt. Lima was forced to fail Ms. Kelley for her performance on a training exercise involving a 35-foot ladder. After failing Ms. Kelley, Capt. Lima was transferred from the station where he was working (an adverse job action). He was also denied a promotion as a direct result of failing the female recruit (another adverse job action). At a Board of Rights Hearing in May 2005 he was told that he should treat women trainees more leniently than men because it was difficult to recruit and retain female firefighters.
