Lichtenberg was the youngest of seventeen children of pastor Johann Conrad Lichtenberg. His father, ascending through the ranks of the church hierarchy, eventually became superintendent for Darmstadt. Unusually for a priest in those times, he seems to have possessed a fair amount of scientific knowledge. Georg Christoph Lichtenberg was educated at his parent's house until ten years of age, when he joined the Lateinschule in Darmstadt. His intelligence and wit became obvious at a very early age. He wanted to study mathematics, but his family could not afford to pay for lessons. In 1762 his mother applied to Ludwig VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt

Georg Christoph Lichtenberg was an experimental physicist, an astronomer, a mathematician, a practicing critic both of art and literature. As satirical writer, he is the best known for his ridicule of metaphysical and romantic excesses. He discovered in 1777 the basic principle of modern xerographic copying; the images that he reproduced are still called "Lichtenberg figures."
Georg Christoph Lichtenberg was born in Oberramstadt, near Darmstadt, on July 1, 1742. Lichtenberg was the first of seventeen children, most of whom died at an early age. Lichtenberg's father, Johann Conrad Lichtenberg, was a Lutheran clergyman, who taught him mathematics and natural sciences. He died in 1751 when Lichtenberg was nine. Henrietta Catharina (Eckard) Lichtenberg, his mother, came also from a clerical family. She died in 1764. Later Lichtenberg said, that he had dreams of his mother every night.

Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799) German physicits, mathematician, astromoner, and satirical writer, best-known for his aphorisms he collected in his notebooks (waste books). Lichtenberg has been admired by such writers and philosophers as Goethe, Nietzsche, Schopenhaeur, Tolstoy, and Wittgenstein. Goethe once said: "We may use Lichtenberg’s writings as the most wonderful dowsing rod: wherever he makes a joke, there a problem lies hidden." In his notebooks Lichtenberg examined unsystematically a wide variety of subjects, from society and philosophical questions to psychology and art and literature. Throughout his life Lichtenberg suffered from poor health, but he had hypochondriac tendencies, too. "The greatest things in the world are brought about other things which we count as nothing: little causes we overlook but which at length accumulate." (from The Waste Books , trans. by

translated with an introduction and notes by R. J. Hollingdale
Penguin Books, 1990 anything very significant . He lectured well enough that people ``came to hear Lichtenberg'' (doubtless being one of the first to add demonstrations with apparatus to his lectures helped), and apparently talked very well. He wrote on just about everything, especially Hogarth; like many recipients of the Enlightenment on the Continent, he was a pronounced Anglophile; his sex life is described by his translator as ``very irregular,'' and today would almost certain have put him in jail. Undoubtedly it would've been interesting to know him, but this is not the sort of thing which preserves a person from oblivion, not after two hundred years. That trick has been done by his astonishing talent as an aphorist, the aphorisms having been mined by generations of posthumous editors from a set of highly disorganized notebooks he called ``waste-books''. These are gems of the aphorist's art, endlessly quotable and very trenchant, but strangely little-known in English (the last translation before Hollingdale's was in 1959, and has long been out of print). A few quotations of the shorter ones may give some idea of the flavor of the whole. He marvelled at the fact that cats had two holes cut in their fur at precisely the spot where their eyes were.
