Who's Who: Percy Wyndham Lewis
Updated - Sunday, 21 July, 2002 Percy Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) served as an official British artist during the First World War in addition to serving as a battery officer. Born in Nova Scotia in 1882 Lewis was educated in England at the renowned Rugby School. Thereafter accepted into Slade School of Art in 1898 Lewis graduated in 1901 and embarked upon a tour of Europe, eventually returning to England in 1909. Lewis established a reputation as a man of parts: aside from his undoubted talent as an artist he published essays, plays and novels, and came to be regarded as a satirist. In 1912 Lewis founded Vorticism, a new literary and artistic movement of sharp angles and bold lines which went out of its way to reject the 'irrelevant' romanticism of the nineteenth century, instead stressing qualities such as violence and energy together with the increasing importance of mechanical machines in the modern world. Supporters of his group included another artist who would serve in an official capacity during wartime, Christopher Nevinson Lewis's First World War service included two years spent on the Western Front as a battery officer from 1916-18. In 1937 he published his wartime memoirs as

Advertising
T he art of advertisement, after the American manner, has introduced into all our life such a lavish use of superlatives, that no standard of value whatever is intact.
Equality
T he intelligence suffers today automatically in consequence of the attack on all authority, advantage, or privilege. These things are not done away with, it is needless to say, but numerous scapegoats are made of the less politically powerful, to satisfy the egalitarian rage awakened.
Ideas
T he ideas of a time are like the clothes of a season: they are as arbitrary, as much imposed by some superior will which is seldom explicit. They are utilitarian and political, the instruments of smooth-running government.
Youth
A hundred things are done today in the divine name of Youth, that if they showed their true colors would be seen by rights to belong rather to old age. List By Author : A B C D ... Finally, Tarr
A year after my stated intention , and after the friendly advice of Splinters readers I’ve finally got round to finishing the novel Tarr by Wyndham Lewis . Part of this wait is not my fault. Its incredibly hard to get hold of this book in the UK. NO British bookseller stocks it at all, and neither does UK Amazon. So, I booked it through Amazon US…and waited…and waited……until they confirmed it was no longer in stock there either. Eventually I tracked an old limited print copy down through a US supplier by the name of Alibris . Ta for Tarr fellers (hiLARity.) So, what did I think of it then? A note on the dingy character of Lewis himself first. As I read in Dorril’s biography of Mosley recently, the man was a great deal more than “flirtatious” with Fascism as is often soft-soapingly claimed. He was a contributor to Mosley’s publications as well as an admirer of Hitler. Yes, he  came repudiate some of these positions, but an authoritarianism both wild and cold, and above all a contempt for common humanity as a whole never ceased to pervade his work. Having read a bit about his life, this moral misanthropy seems to have tied in with a general amorality in his day to day dealings too. Wyndham Lewis was deeply anti-humanist, and in short Not A Nice Chap. So with that firmly established in my mind, it would take a strong gift for language to keep my interest. And guess what? To a huge extent, Tarr succeeded in just that. Wyndham Lewis’ writing style in Tarr is truly unique, in the purest sense. Fingerprint-like, it could not be reproduced by anyone else.  Harsh and metallic, the language is both strange and surgical, as though honed with scalpels themselves cut into a queer shape. In this it mirrors the  qualities of the

Proposals are invited for 20 minute conference papers that consider Lewis i=
n two ways: as a major critical presence who evaluated, theorized, and fore=
saw numerous key problems of modernity; and as a writer in relation to othe=

Furthermore, Lewis's placement within the larger conste= llations of English, American and European letters remains under-explored, = and his role as a philosopher-critic who produced distinctive appraisals of= modernity continues to be under-estimated. Wyndham Lewis and Portraiture 'Wyndham Lewis [is] the greatest portraitist of this or any other time'. Walter Sickert The iconoclastic artist-writer Wyndham Lewis was the most important modernist creator of the first half of the twentieth century. This book focuses on his involvement with the other 'Men of 1914': Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot and James Joyce but also looks at his portraits of other well-known personalities, such as Oswald Mosley, Naomi Mitchison, Edith Sitwell and G.K. Chesterton. He conceived of personal identity not as an essence but as a series of possible performances, which he sought to reveal in his portraits. Supposedly definitive oil paintings are seen alongside clusters of drawings that reveal quite divergent aspects of self-presentation. Broadly chronological, this book starts with how Lewis portrayed himself as a multiple identity and leads on to show how he projected this view onto his sitters. The high point of his career as a portraitist came in the 1930s; when the RA rejected his 1938 portrait of T.S. Eliot, it triggered the resignation of Augustus John, a Times leader and a speech by Churchill. This was typical of the controversy and publicity that characterized Lewis as an artist. Although later in life he succeeded in alienating patrons and potential friends, some sitters still caught his imagination. His last major portrait was of T.S. Eliot - renewing his commitment to the values of the men of 1914 despite a drastic deterioration in his sight caused by the brain tumour that eventually killed him in 1957.

Creative Quotations from . . . Wyndham Lewis
(1882-1957) born on Nov 18 English "author, painter". "He founded the abstract Vorticist movement, which, in painting and literature before WW I, sought to relate art to the industrial process." No American worth his salt should go around looking for a root. I advance this in all modesty, as a not unreasonable opinion."
"When we say "science" we can either mean any manipulation of the inventive and organizing power of the human intellect: or we can mean such an extremely different thing as the religion of science, the vulgarized derivative from this pure activity . . ." "'Dying for an idea,' again, sounds well enough, but why not let the idea die instead of you?" "We are the first men of a Future that has not materialized. We belong to a "great age" that has not "come off." We moved too quickly for the world. We set too sharp a pace." "Almost anything that can be praised or advocated has been put to some disgusting use. There is no principle, however immaculate, that has not had its compromising manipulator."

Review of David Ayers, Wyndham Lewis and Western Man Macmillan. 251pp. ISBN O33331671. John Constable Email: jbc12@cam.ac.uk First published: Essays in Criticism, 43/3 (July 1993), 265-271. That Wyndham Lewis posed a "Jewish Question" is well-known, and a good book on his attitudes to Jews would be a good book all round, not only contributing to Lewis studies but helping us to learn more about human behaviour from his particular example. David Ayers' Wyndham Lewis and Western Man , however, is poorly researched, employs cumbersome psychoanalytic concepts with a naivete that is astonishing, and is plagued with serious errors. There is no likelihood that it will be widely influential, though doubtless the waters around Lewis, already turbid with fanaticism, will be made yet muddier, as if that mattered. But because of its inadequacies it has considerable interest as a representative of that intellectual carelessness, and a tendency to sensationalism, which afflicts those who have, as they think, strong moral cases. A case of this kind requires impeccable scholarship in all the fields in which it moves, Lewis, history, psychology and psychoanalysis, before its claims to attention become credible. Ayers is deficient in all of them, and also gives evidence everywhere of what one could charitably call over excitement. One example will be enough. After an extended comparison of Lewis's discussion of Georges Sorel in
