Percy Wyndham Lewis Percy Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) was a 20th-century painter born in Canada and raised in Britain. He was one of the first British artists to be interested in Cubism and Expressionism, although he ended up developing his own unique style of art. At the outbreak of World War I, he was appointed official war artist by the British and Canadian governments and much of his art seems to center on ideas related to militarism. Wyndham Lewis had a passion for technology, aviation, speed, and exhilaration. Vorticism Wyndham Lewis co-founded the Vorticist movement and was the leading painter of this style. Wyndham Lewis was an inordinately influential twentieth-century artist. In an age of volcanic social change, his was a disciplined, stable and overwhelming intelligence. Often unkempt, usually poverty stricken and always derided for his pleas for support, which alternated with bouts of searing ingratitude, Lewis did not have an endearing personality. But with the benefit of hindsight it might be true to say that these unattractive traits were maintained for his self-protection, if his behaviour had been merely bohemian he would have been tolerated, cherished and, possibly, drowned in charity: a fate which overtook his friend Augustus John. Lewis's integrity was clothed in tougher leather.

INTRODUCTION Lewis is known as one of the “Men of 1914,” a group including Ezra Pound and James Joyce that is credited with revolutionizing twentieth-century art and literature. Enjoying initial success as a painter and portraitist, Lewis became instrumental in the reaction against Romanticism in the first two decades of the twentieth century with his championing of Vorticist values as a painter and editor of the magazine Blast. After World War I, Lewis established himself as a novelist, philosopher, and critic with a series of works that reflect an affinity with German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's belief that artists should exist beyond fear of social reproach and female domination. He embraced and later rejected Fascism and Adolph Hitler's rise to power in the 1930s, resulting in a long period of critical and public disfavor in which charges of anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia, and misogyny were leveled against him.
