The English scholar, science-fiction writer, and Christian apologist Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland. He was educated privately and at the University of Oxford, and was a member of The Inklings, a group of Oxford writers including J. R. R. Tolkien and Charles Williams. A fellow and tutor at Oxford from 1925 to 1954, he was subsequently professor of medieval and Renaissance English literature at the University of Cambridge.
Lewis's critical works include Allegory of Love: A Study in Medieval Tradition (1936), which examines the connections between medieval literature and courtly love, and A Preface to Paradise Lost (1942). Lewis was known to a large public, however, as a persuasive and passionate advocate of conservative Christianity through books which examined and explained moral and religious problems. His Perelandra trilogy Out of the Silent Planet Perelandra (1943), and

C.S. Lewis - Narnia and the North
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was released in UK cinemas in December 2005. It is a film adaptation of C.S. Lewis's beloved children's book about a magical land and a majestic lion. Although The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is Lewis's most famous book, he was a prolific writer, poet, scholar of English literature and defender of Christianity.
Lewis the man
C.S. Lewis's own account of his early years reads like a list of books, along with a few people, that shaped his life. Lewis was born in Belfast in 1898, the younger of two sons. His parents Albert and Flora were both keen readers. In his autobiography, Surprised by Joy , Lewis describes himself as "a product of long corridors, empty sunlit rooms, upstair indoor silences, attics explored in solitude, distant noises of gurgling cisterns and pipes, and the noise of wind under the tiles. Also, of endless books." Born Clive Staples Lewis, he announced when he was three years old that his name was Jack, and Jack he was to family and friends for the rest of his life. His older brother was Warren, nicknamed Warnie.

Alternative History Eschatology History Literature ... Reply to John J. Reilly Here From the Obituaries of The New York Times , November 26, 1963 A rgentine police officials today confirmed that the remains of Clive Staples Lewis were among those found in the ashes of a bungalow on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. The building burned to the ground on November 22, just as Mr. Lewis, a long-time international fugitive, was about to be apprehended by agents of the CIA and MI5. Allegations of his involvement with this week's tragic events in Dallas are continuing to stir worldwide controversy [See Page A1]. Mr. Lewis is believed to have committed suicide by self-immolation. The exact number of his companions and the cause of their deaths are still under investigation. With the death of Mr. Lewis, the hunt for the major war criminals of the Second World War can be said to be over. C.S. Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, to an ordinary professional-class household of Belfast in the north of Ireland. His father, Albert, was a successful police prosecutor. His mother, born Flora Hamilton, died while he and his only sibling, an older brother named Warren, were still young. (Warren Lewis, a career army officer, died of liver disease in 1936.) According to C.S. Lewis's own memoirs, he endured a singularly unhappy childhood in the British public (i.e., private) schools of the period. He was the object of repeated beatings by other boys, and his academic performance was marginal. The young Lewis took refuge in bizarre fantasies involving animals, and also began a fascination with the occult that would greatly affect his later career.

Lewis (1898-1963) One of the truly towering intellects of the twentieth century, Clive Staples Lewis was a Christian apologist, moral mythologist, scholar and writer, born in Belfast, N. Ireland. Lewis taught at Magdalene College, Oxford from 1925-54 and from 1954 at Cambridge. His time at Oxford brought him into an association with some of his peers, who gathered regularly in their rooms or at local public houses to recite their personal work to each other. This group, who came to be known as the Inklings, included J. R. R. Tolkien and Charles Williams. The central event in Lewis' life was his conversion to Christianity, a process which occupied the years 1929-31, and which provided the foundation for all his later work. Lewis documents his spiritual odyssey in the book, "Surprised By Joy" (1955). He came to the attention of the public as a result of a series of radio broadcasts during World War II, in which his ability to present deep Christian truth in a simple and engaging way won him wide popularity with the listening audience. That popularity was not shared, however, by his academic colleagues, who were jealous of his success. " The Screwtape Letters " (1942), a correspondence between two of Hell's demons named Screwtape and Wormwood, is his best-known book.

During World War I (1914-1918) he served as a second lieutenant in the British army and was wounded, hospitalized, and finally demobilized in 1918, when he returned to Oxford to complete his degree. This web site is designed to promote the study of the works of C. S. Lewis. Clive Staples or "Jack" Lewis (1898-1963) was a tutor at Oxford University, England and later the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English Literature at Cambridge University, England. He wrote apologetics, science fiction, children and adult fantasy, and much more. His writings and radio talks became so popular that he was called an "apostle to the sceptics" by Time magazine. In recent years his life still draws interest: the movie "The Shadowlands" is based on his relationship with Joy Davidman. His imagination, the clarity of his writing style, the force of his apologetic and his integrity have influenced thousands of people. This site has links to other web resources and it has information about a discussion guide I wrote called The Bible and C. S. Lewis which presents the Christian world-view. I added A Frequently Ask Question Page which not only has questions and answers about C. S. Lewis and my discussion guide, but some favorable comments from readers of my guide. Clive Staples Lewis ("Jack" Lewis to his friends) was a tutor and lecturer at Oxford University, and later Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English Literature at Cambridge University. In the judgement of many, he is the most popular and most effective explainer and defender of the Christian faith writing in English in this century. He tried to make a point of avoiding disputes on matters where Christians disagree, and defending those beliefs which they hold in common. His work was valued by many Christians of widely differing backgrounds: Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, Presyterian, Roman Catholic, etc.

A selection of articles discussing this topic.
Main article: C. S. Lewis
British scholar, novelist, and author of about 40 books, most of them on Christian apologetics, the most widely known being The Screwtape Letters. He also achieved fame with a trilogy of science-fiction novels and with the Chronicles of Narnia, a series of seven children's books that have become classics of fantasy literature.
Tolkien's fellow scholar, C.S. Lewis, created his own otherworld of Narnia. It is more derivative than Tolkien's (he owes something, for example, to Nesbit), more clearly Christian-allegorical, more carefully adapted to the tastes of children. Though uneven, the seven volumes of the cycle, published through the years 1950 to 1956, are exciting, often humorous, inventive, and, in the final...
