A t first glance, C. S. Lewis and Elvis Presley seem like polar opposites. But a closer look will show that these two cultural icons have a lot in common. Clive Staples Lewis was anything but a classic evangelical, socially or theologically. He smoked cigarettes and a pipe, and he regularly visited pubs to drink beer with friends. Though he shared basic Christian beliefs with evangelicals, he didn't subscribe to biblical inerrancy or penal substitution. He believed in purgatory and baptismal regeneration. How did someone with such a checkered pedigree come to be a theological Elvis Presley, adored by evangelicals? The Problem of Pain
The journey begins in 1940, when the world was teetering on the brink of collapse. The Nazis were rampaging across Europe. France had fallen, Hitler had signed a nonaggression pact with the Soviet Union, and only Great Britain stood in the way of Nazi domination of Europe.

The Passion of C.S. Lewis
By Alison Lurie
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a film directed by Andrew Adamson The Narnian: The Life and Imagination of C.S. Lewis by Alan Jacobs HarperSanFrancisco, 342 pp., $25.95 Revisiting Narnia: Fantasy, Myth and Religionin C.S. Lewis' Chronicles edited by Shanna Caughey Benbella, 320 pp., $14.95 (paper)
The new film of C.S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Chronicles of Narnia . Their choice of this project is deeply appropriate, for the Narnia books have always been popular with conservative Christians, perhaps not only for their partly concealed religious message, but also for their underlying social and political implications. The Disney/Walden version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , like the original book, is a fantasy in which four English children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, find their way through a large wardrobe into Narnia, a world ruled by an evil White Witch, where it is always winter and never Christmas. With the help of some talking animals, especially a huge lion called Aslan, the Witch is eventually defeated, and spring returns to Narnia, where the four children become kings and queens. But the story can also be read as a Christian allegory in which the killing and resurrection of Aslan stands for the death and rebirth of Christ, who sacrifices himself to expiate the sins of mankind (in this case, the sulky ten-year-old Edmund, who has betrayed his brother and sisters to the White Witch out of sibling rivalry and a greedy passion for a candy called Turkish Delight).

The English scholar, science-fiction writer, and Christian apologist Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland. He was educated privately and at the University of Oxford, and was a member of The Inklings, a group of Oxford writers including J. R. R. Tolkien and Charles Williams. A fellow and tutor at Oxford from 1925 to 1954, he was subsequently professor of medieval and Renaissance English literature at the University of Cambridge.
Lewis's critical works include Allegory of Love: A Study in Medieval Tradition (1936), which examines the connections between medieval literature and courtly love, and A Preface to Paradise Lost (1942). Lewis was known to a large public, however, as a persuasive and passionate advocate of conservative Christianity through books which examined and explained moral and religious problems. His Perelandra trilogy Out of the Silent Planet Perelandra (1943), and

C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud: a comparison of their thoughts and viewpoints on life, pain and death
The following Part One article is adapted from a speech made by Dr. Armand Nicholi at a faculty/alumni luncheon hosted by Dallas Christian Leadership at Southern Methodist University on September 23, 1997. Part Two appears in The Real Issue of March 1998 and explores Lewis' change in worldview and eventual conversion. The worldviews of Sigmund Freud and C. S. Lewis, both prevalent in our culture today, present diametrically opposed interpretations of who we areour identity, where we come from, our biological and cultural heritageand our destiny. First, let us lay the ground work for our discussion by asking three questions. Who is Sigmund Freud? Who is C. S. Lewis? And, what is a worldview?

C.S. Lewis
Clive Staples Lewis (29 November 1898- 22 November 1963), commonly referred to as C. S. Lewis was an Irish author and scholar, born into a Protestant family in Belfast, though mostly resident in England. Lewis is known for his work on medieval literature, for his Christian apologetics and for his fiction, especially the children’s series entitled The Chronicles of Narnia and his science fiction Space Trilogy. He was also the leading figure in an Oxford literary group called the Inklings. Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland), to Albert James Lewis and Flora Augusta Hamilton Lewis. At the age of 4, shortly after his dog 'Jacksie' was run over by a car, Lewis announced that his name was now Jacksie. At first he would answer to no other name, but later accepted Jacks which became Jack, the name by which he was known to friends and family for the rest of his life. When he was six his family moved into a new house called Leeborough or Little Lea in Strandtown.

Was Jesus Whom He Claimed?
Is Jesus really whom he is reported to have said he was? Was Jesus really the Son of God? C.S. Lewis believed so and also believed that he had a very good argument for convincing people to agree: if Jesus was not whom he claimed, then he must be a lunatic, a liar, or worse. He was certain that no one could seriously argue for or accept these alternatives and that left only his favored explanation. Lewis expressed his idea in more than one place, but the most definitive appears in
