W ELCOME TO Into the Wardrobe ! I am delighted to have been asked by John Visser, the creator of this excellent web site, to write a few words of introduction. For those who have no idea about C. S. Lewis and his work, and are just looking for a fun site, there is plenty to investigate and enjoy right here, and what you find here may well lead you into years of enjoyable reading as you discover the existence of one of the finest writers of this century, and find out about his books. On the other hand, for those who are already fascinated by Jack (C. S. Lewis' nickname) and his "Narnian Chronicles", or other works, and want to know more about him and his world, you can almost be there yourself by wandering through this site's various links. There is much here of worth to the serious scholar too, and if you are about to embark on a paper about Jack or his works I heartily recommend this site as a research source. Very best wishes to you, no matter who you are or what your reason for being here. I hope you enjoy your time inside this very large wardrobe.

The Creator of Narnia: C. S. Lewis
by Ann-Marie Imbornoni

C. S. Lewis, or Jack Lewis, as he preferred to be called, was born in Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland) on November 29, 1898. He was the second son of Albert Lewis, a lawyer, and Flora Hamilton Lewis. His older brother, Warren Hamilton Lewis, who was known as Warnie, had been born three years earlier in 1895. Early Days
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. A Painful Loss
This somewhat idyllic boyhood came to an end for Lewis when his mother became ill and died of cancer in 1908. Barely a month after her death the two boys were sent away from home to go to boarding school in England. Lewis hated the school, with its strict rules and hard, unsympathetic headmaster, and he missed Belfast terribly. Fortunately for him, the school closed in 1910, and he was able to return to Ireland. After a year, however, he was sent back to England to study. This time, the experience proved to be mostly positive. As a teenager, Lewis learned to love poetry, especially the works of Virgil and Homer. He also developed an interest in modern languages, mastering French, German, and Italian.

C.S. Lewis - Narnia and the North
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was released in UK cinemas in December 2005. It is a film adaptation of C.S. Lewis's beloved children's book about a magical land and a majestic lion. Although The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is Lewis's most famous book, he was a prolific writer, poet, scholar of English literature and defender of Christianity.
Lewis the man
C.S. Lewis's own account of his early years reads like a list of books, along with a few people, that shaped his life. Lewis was born in Belfast in 1898, the younger of two sons. His parents Albert and Flora were both keen readers. In his autobiography, Surprised by Joy , Lewis describes himself as "a product of long corridors, empty sunlit rooms, upstair indoor silences, attics explored in solitude, distant noises of gurgling cisterns and pipes, and the noise of wind under the tiles. Also, of endless books." Born Clive Staples Lewis, he announced when he was three years old that his name was Jack, and Jack he was to family and friends for the rest of his life. His older brother was Warren, nicknamed Warnie.

A Study of the Christian World View
This web site is designed to promote the study of the works of C. S. Lewis. Clive Staples or "Jack" Lewis (1898-1963) was a tutor at Oxford University, England and later the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English Literature at Cambridge University, England. He wrote apologetics, science fiction, children and adult fantasy, and much more. His writings and radio talks became so popular that he was called an "apostle to the sceptics" by Time magazine. In recent years his life still draws interest: the movie "The Shadowlands" is based on his relationship with Joy Davidman. His imagination, the clarity of his writing style, the force of his apologetic and his integrity have influenced thousands of people. This site has links to other web resources and it has information about a discussion guide I wrote called The Bible and C. S. Lewis which presents the Christian world-view. I added A Frequently Ask Question Page which not only has questions and answers about C. S. Lewis and my discussion guide, but some favorable comments from readers of my guide. Finally I added a The Bible and C. S. Lewis Bookstore

C(live) S(taples) Lewis (1898-1963) British literary critic, scholar and author, known for his classic fantasy stories for children, THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA (1950-1956), which show the influence of J.R.R. Tolkien . During his literary career, Lewis was one of the most popular spokesmen for Christianity in the English-speaking world. " 'When Aslan said you could never go back to Narnia, he meant the Narnia you were thinking of. But that was not the real Narnia. That had a beginning and an end. It was only a shadow or a copy of the real Narnia which has always been there and always will be there: just as our own world, England and all, is only a shadow or copy of something in Aslan's real world. You need not mourn over Narnia, Lucy. All of the old Narnia that mattered, all the dear creatures, have been drawn into the real Narnia through the Door. And of course it is different; as different as a real thing is from a shadow or as waking life is from a dream.'" (from The Last Battle Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland, as the son of A.J. Lewis, a solicitor, and Flora Augusta (Hamilton). His mother, a promising mathematician, died when he was nine years old. Lewis had been very close to his mother, who taught him to love books and encouraged him to study French and Latin. Lewis and his brother were brought up by their father. During his childhood, Lewis created the imaginary country of Bloxen. He started writing early - in the attic of their house he had a "study" where he composed his stories. After attending schools in Hertfordshire, Northern Ireland and Malvern, he was educated at home from 1914-17. "I am the product of long corridors, empty sunlit rooms, upstairs indoor silences, attics explored in solitude, distant noises of gurgling cisterns and pipes, and the noise of wind under the tiles. Also of endless books," Lewis wrote in his autobiographical book

C.S. Lewis Chronicles
A Compendium of Information about this Great Writer
Although the world tragically lost a great man on November 22, 1963, he left us a rich legacy of literature which lives on. Not only was Clive Staples (Jack) Lewis prolificthe fact that he wrote in a wide variety of genres means he has produced something for everyone. Lewis' work ranges from poetry to science fiction, from academic treatises to defenses of the Christian faith, from anointed correspondence to sanctified fantasy. As we approach the millennium, his popularity continues to grow; everything Lewis wrote for publication remains in print. Many read Lewis merely for pleasure, and he certainly offers that. Others search his books for answers to questions about eternity and humanity's place in the cosmos. The fact that Lewis, a professor at both Oxford and Cambridge, possessed a keen intellect strengthens his credibility in many circles. That this brilliant agnostic came to recognize the validity first of Theism, and then of Christianity, provides an amazing testimony. That he could also communicate the gospel so effectively to the "common person" is an additional evidence of his skill. Lewis, a faithful member of the Anglican communion, was no defender of denominational particulars. His calling was to promote a profound vision of "mere Christianity," which is nothing less than the heart of the faith. His theology was thoroughly incarnationalfocusing always on Jesus Christ. It is no accident that his popular Chronicles of Narnia series revolves not around human protagonists, but around Aslan himself.
