  • PRUSSIAN SEROLOGIST Many of Philip Levine's greatest contributions to the fields of serology and forensic science occurred when he was working with the Nobel Prizewinning Austrian immunologist Karl Landsteiner (1868–1943). Together, they sought evidence in their research that there were more than the ABO blood groups previously identified by Landsteiner. Levine was born in a small village in Polish Russia in 1900. He moved with his family to Brooklyn, New York, when he was eight years old. Levine grew up in New York, graduated from City College, and went to Cornell Medical School. After graduation from medical school and completion of a Master's Degree, he accepted a position at the Rockefeller Institute as an associate (eventually, assistant) to pathologist... Philip Levine
Philip Levine Levine was born in Detroit, Michigan, and educated in local schools and at Wayne State University. He is now Professor of English at California State University in Fresno. Levine has periodically lived in Spain, a country whose people, landscape, and history remain a strong presence in his poems?. Levine is particularly well known for his poems set in Detroit, a blighted urban landscape about which he has written with visionary intensity. 1933 (1974) was his most explicitly autobiographical work, in which family members and the physical geography of Detroit were uniquely invoked. 'Letters for the Dead', 'Uncle', and ?1933' are among the finest poems of his maturity, followed in The Names of the Lost (1976) by more poems set in Detroit, such as 'Belle Isle, 1949', which describes a young couple who 'baptize? themselves in the polluted Detroit River with its 'brine / of cars parts, dead fish, stolen bicycles, / melted snow'.

American landscape, in a style that echoes both poetic romanticism and prosaic clarity. From the dingy interiors of industrial factories, to the oddities of working- and middle-class life, to the idyllic untamed backwoods of "This Great Nation," What Work Is runs the full gauntlet of 20th-century literary hallmarks. And only occasionally does it fall short, favoring itself with a bit too much bland suburban white-picket-fence type description, as in "Above The World," which is all very nice except that it may come across as a little too Back in the good ol' days for one's taste. Thankfully though, Philip Levine normally makes it quite easy

    Summer 2005
    On Thom Gunn
    Philip Levine
Fifty years ago I picked up a copy of Poetry in a library in Tallahassee, Florida, and discovered nine poems leading off the issue by Thom Gunn, a name I'd never heard before. With their charged conversational voice full of anger and mockery in tightly controlled stanzas, the poems were like nothing I'd ever read. In the contributors' column I discovered he was English, though nothing in the writing seemed foreign to me except, perhaps, the technical wizardry. These poems—which I later reread in his book Fighting Terms—had a peculiar power to simply carve the moment of their discovery into my consciousness. This has happened perhaps five times in my reading life. I could take you back tomorrow to the battered library desk I was sitting at and say, "There I discovered the poetry of Thom Gunn"; his words had simply exploded in my head. That was the day his name alone took on a kind of magic.
Thom had a profound sense of that tact which is so essential to a poet. We took to exchanging books early, and we felt free enough to comment on each other's work. I never forgot the advice he gave me after reading my book
