If This is a Man and The Truce
By Primo Levi
Abacus, 1995. 398 pp., $16.95 (pb)
Reviewed by Phil Shannon The poisonous Demidenko/Darville rewriting of the history of the anti-Semitic horror of European fascism needs an antidote. There are none better than Primo Levi, the Italian chemist whose books on his experiences in the Nazi death camps are everything that Demidenko/Darville is not - honest, compassionate, literate and, yes, a force for good in the world. If This is a Man and The Truce is the two part record of Levi's enslavement in Auschwitz and his return to Italy after liberation by the Red Army. This 1995 re-publication is the 10th in nine years, a testimony to Levi's continuing relevance and artistic skill, and to his truthfulness. There is no hoax, no invention of facts, just an accurate rendering of the reality of the fascist hell on earth. In 1943, 24 year old Levi, a member of a Resistance group in northern Italy, was captured by the fascist militia and sent with 649 other Italian Jews to the Monowitz camp in the Auschwitz concentration camp complex in Poland. Levi was one of only three of these 650 who survived.

Primo Levi: A Life
by Ian Thomson. New York: Metropolitan Books, Henry Holt and Company,
2003, xviii + 583 pp., $32.50. On his tombstone we read his dates, his name, the number tattooed on his arm:
Primo Levi
Levi arrived at Auschwitz on February 26, 1944; Russian troops liberated the camp on January 27, 1945. His year at Auschwitz was one year of his life, but it was all of his life. It is the way we know him. Levi was many things. He was a Jew, an atheist, and an Italian. He was a scientist with a doctorate in chemistry. He was the author of memoirs, stories, poems, essays, science fiction, and a novel. He was a man with very many friends, who nevertheless was isolated from the world by his depression. And he was 174517. He once signed a letter to a fellow survivor that way (p. 219). We are told, "And he always wore a short-sleeved shirt with a suit, even in winter, so that his prison tattoo was exposed whenever he removed his jacket" (p. 250). Later in the book, we read a letter to Ian Thomson from a Professor De Felice telling us of an occasion when Levi looked out a window, "rolled up his sleeves and placed his hands on his hips, elbows nearly touching behind him. I then saw the tattooed serial number on his forearm" (p. 426). Levi was determined to be a witness. Slowly and with difficulty, he wrote his story of life in the camp. Surprisingly, he had trouble getting it published. He had a cousin in Massachusetts, Anna Yona, who translated a chapter into English and passed it on to an editor at Little, Brown and Company, which, in turn, passed it on to Rabbi Joshua Loth Liebman, who was quite well known at the time as the author of the book

Weightless
Primo Levi
In one of the last pieces he ever wrote, Primo Levi considers the miracle of weightlessness in outer space and Dante's Inferno. I wonder what it would take to make a documentary that would link together these visions, transmitted by some miracle from the satellites that flash past above our heads and above our atmosphere. A film like that, drawn from American and Soviet sources, and with an intelligent commentary, would teach everybody so much. It would certainly be more successful than the nonsense that is put out today, more successful too than porno movies. I have also often wondered about the experiments, or more particularly the simulation courses which aspiring astronauts have to undergo and which journalists write about as if they were nothing out of the ordinary. What sense is there in them? And how is weightlessness simulated? The only technique imaginable would be to close the candidates in a vehicle in freefall: a plane or an elevator such as Einstein postulated for the experiment designed to illustrate the concept of special relativity. But a plane, even in a vertical fall, is braked by the resistance of the air, and a lift (or rather, a fall) has additional frictional forces acting on the cable. In both cases, weightlessness (or abaria From this persistent dream of weightlessness, my mind returns to a well-known rendition of the Geryon episode in the seventeenth canto of the

Primo Levi - If Not Now, When?
This is a work full of unimaginable pain and suffering. It follows a loose group of Jewish partisans behind German lines in the last few years of World War Two as they attempt to both survive and exact some military suffering on the German occupiers. Then as the war finishes, it follows their slow and difficult journey towards Italy and the hope of a ship to Palestine, where they dream of building a Jewish haven - Israel.
This isn't simply a work about the pain of war, nor the cold of the Soviet winter, though both of these are backdrops to an intense, difficult story. This is the story of people who have seen and survived horrors which we can't comprehend. The young Jew who watched the SS (boys scarcely older than himself) murder his family, the older Russian soldier who escaped a POW camp, and the man who watched all the Jews from his village forced to dig their own mass grave, before the Einsatzgruppen shot them all.

Sunday Book Review
Prisoner of War

By JONATHAN ROSEN Published: May 27, 2007 Twenty years ago last month, Primo Levi plunged headlong into the stairwell of the apartment building in Turin where he had been born and to which he had returned after liberation from Auschwitz. At the time, there was a great deal of debate about the nature and meaning of his death: was it an accident or a suicide, illness or cosmic despair? But it is surely the way he lived and wrote in the four decades after the war that matter most. If the ancient Greeks were right that it is the manner of one’s death as much as the substance of one’s life that determines its ultimate meaning, then much of European Jewry, not to mention European culture, would need to be written off as an abject failure. Primo Levi, A Tranquil Star
My friend Bridget sent me galleys for this small collection of Levi stories, which W.W. Norton is billing as "unpublished," even though the back cover copy notes that they were all published in Italian between 1949 and 1986. Coming on the heels of Elie Wiesel's new edition of Night, A Tranquil Star is an exercise in bait-and-switch the hyperbole of the "unpublished" subtitle, the copy's promise that the stories are nonetheless "classic," the phony symbolism of an anniversary (20 years since Levi's much-interpreted death). Most of all, there's the cover, a twinkling star in a starry sky, like the one over a manger. It's sure to appeal to the maudlin, philo-semitic sentiments of the Christians who make up a huge portion of the Holocaust market. All that this poor man suffered, and still he had hope!
I would have discarded the book had it not come from Bridget I read Levi's Survival at Auschwitz years ago, took the message, and have ever since been wary of what my friend Peter Manseau, writing on the much-more glib Wiesel, refers to as

Primo Levi On Guantanamo
By Richard Cohen Thursday, July 28, 2005; Page A25 NEW YORK I need to be very careful here, to say precisely what I mean and leave nothing to chance. I have just seen the play "Primo," which is performed by a single actor, Antony Sher, with material taken from Primo Levi's incomparable "If This Is a Man," the book that made the obscure Italian chemist an international literary sensation. It is an account of his time spent in Auschwitz. I could not help but think of Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo. I know, I know. One must never compare anything to the Holocaust. One must never invoke Nazism except in reference to the Nazis. One must isolate that era as a way of honoring the victims, keeping it pristine and removed from all other human experience because it was so uniquely awful. I know all this and I believe it, too. What's more, I am not likening what happened at Auschwitz and the other camps to what's happening or happened at Guantanamo and other places where America's enemies real or supposed are kept. Our purpose is not to murder. We do not engage in slave labor. We are not evil, and our intent is to safeguard the innocent both here and abroad, not to kill them for whatever reason. I hope I have made myself clear.
