Denise Levertov's passion for literature started early in life. Her mother, Beatrice Spooner-Jones Levertoff, home schooled Denise and brought the works of Willa Cather, Charles Dickens and Leo Tolstoy in to the home. At the age of 5, Denise declared that she wanted to be a writer. The poet's interest in Hasidic mysticism can be attributed to her father. Raised a Hasidic Jew, her father Paul Levertoff converted to an Anglican priest by the time Denise was born. Denise Levertov felt that her inherited propensities and the cultural environment of her family had everything to do with who she became. She became a highly respected American poet. 1923 Born October 24 in Ilford, Essex, England
1928 Alleged to have decided to become a writer
1935 Sent poetry to T. S. Eliot; he responded with 2 pages of "excellent advise," and encouragement
1940 At age 17 her first poem was published in Poetry Quarterly
During World War II She served as a civilian nurse in London throughout the bombings
1946 Her first book The Double Image (she wrote between the ages of 17 and 21) was published and brought her recognition as one of the "New Romantics"
1947 Denise married Mitchell Goodman, an American writer (they later divorced)

      • Acknowledgement, and celebration, of mystery probably constitutes the most consistent theme of my poetry from its very beginnings. Because it is a matter of which I am conscious, it is possible, however imprecisely, to call it an intellectual position; but it is one which emphasizes the incapacity of reason alone (much though I delight in elegant logic) to comprehend experience, and considers Imagination the chief of human faculties. It must therefore be by the exercise of that faculty that one moves toward faith, and possibly by its failure that one rejects it as delusion.

    The Fountain
Don't say, don't say there is no water
to solace the dryness at our hearts.
    I have seen
the fountain springing out of the rock wall
and you drinking there. And I too
before your eyes found footholds and climbed
    to drink the cool water.
The woman of that place, shading her eyes,
frowned as she watched-but not because
she grudged the water, only because she was waiting to see we drank our fill and were refreshed. Don't say, don't say there is no water. That fountain is there among its scalloped green and gray stones, it is still there and always there with its quiet song and strange power to spring in us, up and out through the rock. ~ Denise Levertov ~ Poems 1960-1967 Web archive of Panhala postings: www.panhala.net/Archive/Index.html To subscribe to Panhala, send a blank email to Panhala-subscribe@yahoogroups.com To unsubscribe from Panhala, send a blank email to Panhala-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com music link (left button to play, right button to save)

This page last updated: 11th December 2007. DENISE LEVERTOV: NEW SELECTED POEMS Denise Levertov (1923-1997) was a tireless writer of poetry and prose over six decades and had two dozen anthologies published. She was considered an important voice in the American avant-garde of her time. NEW SELECTED POEMS highlights all her major work except her last two anthologies, THE LIFE AROUND US and THE STREAM AND THE SAPPHIRE. Inclusions here offer a fine example of 157 poems in chronological order. Kenneth Rexroth wrote that she more than anyone, led the redirection of American poetry. . . to the mainstream of world literature. Her wide-ranging topics fall into various categories: Avant garde and Experimental, Modernist, Nature and Environment, Philosophical, Political and Social, Religious and Spiritual. A word about the cover, it is awful. The unflattering photograph of the poet was taken when she was probably in her twenties or thirties. It makes her look pale and washed out. She is wearing red with severe black, neither of which suit her. While researching links for this review I've seen pictures of her as an older, more mature woman, any of which would have made a far better picture for the cover.

which of two lovers it was with whom she felt
this or that moment of pleasure, of something fiery
streaking from head to heels, the way the white
flame of a cascade streaks a mountainside

When she can sit or walk for hours after a movie
talking earnestly and with bursts of laughter with friends, without worrying that it's late, dinner at midnight, her time spent without counting the change . . . When half her bed is covered with books and no one is kept awake by the reading light and she disconnects the phone, to sleep till noon . . . Then selfpity dries up, a joy untainted by guilt lifts her. She has fears, but not about loneliness; fears about how to deal with the aging of her body how to deal with photographs and the mirror. She feels so much younger and more beautiful than she looks. At her happiest or even in the midst of some less than joyful hour, sweating patiently through a heatwave in the city or hearing the sparrows at daybreak, dully gray
