  • She was born in Iran, then known as Persia, in 1919 Her father worked for the Imperial Bank. When she was five, her father visited an exhibition in London which encouraged white farmers to go to southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to farm maize. Although he had no experience of farming, he moved the whole family to Rhodesia

" I was brought up on the farm in the bush, which was the best thing that happened, it was just a wonderful childhood. One of my most formative experiences was listening to my mother playing Beethoven and Chopin on the piano and listening to the drums playing in the compound: two kinds of music playing together. And as a child I didn't see any reason why they shouldn't be played together, you had to be much older to understand that African drums and Chopin weren't really a part of the same phenomenon "

Today's Globe Local Politics Opinion ... Ideas
(Jonathan Player/ The New York Times) August 5, 2007 THE THEME OF fraught relations between men and women will hardly come as a surprise to readers of Doris Lessing, author of dozens of novels, short stories, and essays. For her devoted fan base, Lessing is unquestionably the greatest living writer never to win a Nobel Prize. Now 88, she belongs roughly to same generation as filmmakers Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni, both recently deceased, and like them, she has explored social, psychological, and sexual malaise. Widely acclaimed as a masterpiece, her first London novel, "The Golden Notebook" (1962), was preceded by the five novels in the "Children of Violence" series based on her life in Rhodesia as the daughter of an English couple who had gone there in 1925 to farm. From "Children of Violence" on, Lessing was in the front rank of writers Jean Paul Sartre and Czeslaw Milosz being others who chronicled the allure, disappointments, and hypocrisies of the communist politics that was lingua franca for many of her contemporaries. With "Shikasta" (1979), Lessing branched out into science fiction, occasioning the sort of condemnation from certain quarters that Bob Dylan elicited when he went electric. Science fiction and works of speculative fiction, like her new novel, "The Cleft" allows Lessing to examine the effects of climate change (here called "the Noise") on our species, along with issues of memory and oral narrative.

BY DWIGHT GARNER doris Lessing's two volumes of autobiography "Under My Skin" (1995) and "Walking in the Shade" (published this fall) are striking exceptions to the rule that even extraordinary novelists tend to lead rather ordinary lives. It's impossible to read these books (a third installment is planned) without feeling the rude, healthy glow of a life fully lived. Writing may be a solitary occupation, but "Walking in the Shade" makes it clear that Lessing found time for other things. The book is one of the best accounts yet of how communism dominated the intellectual life of the time, and Lessing often found herself in the political forefront. But this supple memoir is also full of more personal preoccupations. Lessing evokes the feel of drab, gray postwar London; she also captures what it was like to be a single parent in the 1940s and 1950s. The book is crammed with friends and lovers (many of them well-known), and it is an elegy to an almost forgotten time the beginning of the sexual revolution, when almost everyone drank too much, smoked too much and had perhaps just a bit too much sex.

Deep South v.3 n.2 (Winter 1997) Many critics such as Roberta Rubenstein, Magali Cornier Michael, and Claire Sprague, point out the numerous similarities which exist between Woolf and Lessing, and of course Lessing does deliberately invoke Woolf in The Golden Notebook by naming her woman artist Anna Wulf. In this paper, however, I will focus on what I consider to be the strongest and most interesting common point of reference between the two. This is their common distrust of, yet fascination with, the workings of memory, as well as the construction of a personal sense of selfhood, one which develops from an amalgam of 'fact' and 'fiction,' 'actuality' and a sense of a personal 'truth.' Both writers, I believe, use their 'self-representational' or 'autobiographical' texts as the therapeutic means of 'Self'-discovery, to exorcise past unpleasantness, to 'fix' the past, and to create a significant personal present and a sense of 'truth.' I shall discuss first the ways in which both Woolf and Lessing juxtapose 'fact' with 'fiction' in order to create a meaningful sense of 'Self.' Alongside this discussion I shall examine some of the implications of the creation of 'fictive selves' through self-representational writing for Woolf and Lessing. My approach, which concentrates on the unreliability of memory as Woolf and Lessing perceived it, necessarily involves a consideration of historiographic metafiction.

Lessing Not Impressed by Nobel Prize
By RAPHAEL G. SATTER The Associated Press Thursday, October 11, 2007; 4:01 PM LONDON Doris Lessing pulled up in a black cab where a media horde was waiting Thursday in front of her leafy north London home. Reporters opened the door and told her she had won the Nobel Prize for literature, to which she responded: "Oh Christ! ... I couldn't care less." Lessing later said she thought the cameras were there to film a television program. Vegetables peeked out from blue plastic bags she carried out of the cab. British writer Doris Lessing, winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize in literature, talks to members of the media, unseen, outside her home in north London, Thursday Oct. 11, 2007. Lessing, who turns 88 in just over a week, is the oldest person to be honored with the prestigious awards given by the Swedish Academy, said Horace Engdahl, the academy's permanent secretary. Lessing, author of dozens of works from short stories to science fiction, including the classic "The Golden Notebook," won the Nobel Prize for literature Thursday. STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Doris Lessing, author of dozens of works from short stories to science fiction, including the classic “The Golden Notebook,” won the Nobel Prize for literature Thursday. She was praised by the judges for her “skepticism, fire and visionary power.” The Swedish academy’s announcement was stunning even by the standards of Nobel judges, who have been known for such surprises as Austria’s Elfriede Jelinek and Italy’s Dario Fo. Lessing, 11 days short of her 88th birthday, is the oldest choice ever for a prize that usually goes to authors in their 50s and 60s. Although she is widely celebrated for “The Golden Notebook” and other works, she has received little attention in recent years and has been criticized as strident and eccentric. Even Lessing apparently was not expecting to win, the academy’s permanent secretary Horace Engdahl told The Associated Press.
