Mikhail Lermontov
Mikhail Yur'yevich Lermontov (Михаил Юрьевич Лермонтов), (October 15 (October 3, Old Style), 1814 – July 27, 1841), a Russian Romantic writer and poet, sometimes called "the poet of the Caucasus", was the most important presence in the Russian poetry from Alexander Pushkin's death until his own four years later, at the age of 26 - like Pushkin, the casualty of a duel. In one of his best-known poems, written on January 1, 1840 he described his intonations as "iron verse steeped in bitterness and hatred.

A Hero of Our Time
By Mikhail Lermontov
Contents The Author's Preface (to the 2nd edition) Bela Maksim Maksimich Introduction to Pechorin's Journal ... [Notes]
The Author's Preface
The preface is the first and at the same time the last thing in any book. It serves either to explain the purpose of the work or to defend the author from his critics. Ordinarily, however, readers are concerned with neither the moral nor the journalistic attacks on the authoras a result they don't read prefaces. Well, that's too bad, especially in our country. Our public is still so immature and simple-hearted that it doesn't understand a fable unless it finds the moral at the end. It fails to grasp a joke or sense an irony it simply hasn't been brought up properly. It's as yet unaware that obvious violent abuse has no place in respectable society and respectable books, that education nowadays has worked out a sharper, almost invisible, but nevertheless deadly weapon, which behind the curtain of flattery cuts with a stab against which there is no defense. Our public is like the person from the sticks who, overhearing a conversation between two diplomats belonging to hostile courts, becomes convinced that each is being false to his government for the sake of a tender mutual friendship.

Shipwreck: Mikhail Lermontov When: 16 February, 1986 Where: Port Gore, Marlborough Sounds
What happened
  • The Mikhail Lermontov was a regular cruise boat in New Zealand waters. She had been refitted in 1982 and could carry 550 passengers in comfort. She was the Soviet Union's prestige liner. At the time of the shipwreck the Mikhail Lermontov was in the middle of a cruise season which included a number of 11-day cruises. On 16 February 1986 the Mikhail Lermontov left Picton 3:10 pm, carrying 740 passengers and crew. On board was the Marlborough harbourmaster Don Jamison. The ship headed up Queen Charlotte Sound towards the open sea. The captain had gone to his cabin, leaving Jamison in charge. As the ship neared Cape Jackson Jamieson took a course to bring the Mikhail Lermontov closer to the cape. The navigator queried the move, believing that this course could take the ship into danger, but Jamieson had decided to take the ship through the 460 metre-wide passage between Cape Jackson and its outlying lighthouse. No one notified the captain of the decision. At about 5:20 pm the Mikhail Lermontov, travelling at a speed of 15 knots, grounded on rocks on the right-hand side, suffering severe damage to the hull. The ship kept moving, but as she took on water, rolled to one side.

Mikhail Lermontov
born Oct. 15, 1814, Moscow, Russia
died July 27, 1841, Pyatigorsk
Russian poet and novelist. His first volume of verse, Spring , was published in 1830, the year he entered Moscow University. He left the university two years later to enter cadet school. A guards officer after graduating in 1834, he was twice exiled to regiments in the Caucasus because of his passionately libertarian verse. He became popular for having suffered for his poetry, which combined civic and philosophical themes with deeply personal motifs. His mature poems include Mtsyri (1840) and Demon (1841). His novel A Hero of Our Time (1840), a reflection on contemporary society and the fortunes of his generation, is written in superb prose, and the portrait of its alienated hero profoundly influenced later Russian writers. Like Aleksandr Pushkin , to whom he is often compared, he died in a duel. He is remembered as his country's leading Romantic poet. document.writeln(AAMB2);

Rainbow Warrior
The Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior was sunk in Auckland Harbour on 10 July 1985 by French saboteurs. The French government feared that the ship would draw attention to French nuclear testing at Moruroa Atoll. French secret-service agents attached and exploded two limpet mines on the hull of the ship, creating a massive hole and rendering the vessel useless. Photographer Fernando Pereira was killed in the explosion. This event sparked a diplomatic row between New Zealand and France. Prime Minister David Lange described it as ‘a sordid act of international state-backed terrorism’. Agents Alain Mafart and Dominique Prieur were arrested, and each was given a 10-year sentence. Within a year the pair were sent to French Polynesia, and from there they soon returned to France.

Sinking of Mikhail Lermontov
In Picton, (Google Earth 41.298901N, 174.0056E) a sleepy little town of about 3,500 people, is this lifeboat, a lonely reminder of a bizarre sinking of a Russian cruise liner a few years ago. 1986 actually. Murky but not bad weather, and light seas. Travelling in places it should not. And through well chartered waters - ferries travel through here on a daily basis from the North and South islands.
The conspiracy theories around this are thick. The favourite one is that it was an insurance job. A close second is the theory that it was an inside theft - when divers first got to the ship they discovered the ships imprest, an amount of gold bullion, was gone. Apparently it was there when the ship sank so someone got out of there by staying on board when the ship went down. A favourite of the dive groups. Or even a KGB plot to sink a submarine homing beacon to map the Pacific approaches.
Whatever the truth, this lifeboat is an odd trophy sitting in Picton, not far from where the ship went down. It is a sad memorial and struck me as pretty lonely and feeble when compared to what it had come off and what it had once represented. And the truth is , like all wrecks they are dangerous to dive. Three have died in the hull and one of those remains missing in there somewhere.
