Leonard was born in New Orleans, but his father worked as a site locator for General Motors and the family moved frequently for several years. In 1934 the family finally settled in Detroit Michigan and Leonard has made this area his home ever since. In the 1930s, two major events occurred that would influence many of his works. Gangsters such as Bonnie and Clyde were making national headlines, as were the Detroit Tigers baseball team. From about 1931 to 1934, Bonnie and Clyde were on a rampage, and were killed in May 1934. The Tigers made it to the World Series in 1934. Leonard turned these events into lifelong fascinations with both sports and guns. Leonard graduated from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School in and immediately joined the Navy, where he served with the

WHEN THE WOMEN COME OUT TO DANCE ... OUT OF SIGHT (Excerpt) Elmore Leonard BIO Elmore Leonard has written more than three dozen books during his highly successful writing career, including the national bestsellers MR. He has been named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America and lives in Bloomfield Village, Michigan, with his wife. PAST INTERVIEW September 8, 2000 Elmore Leonard's 36th novel, PAGAN BABIES, loaded with a killer title and a riveting plot, just hit the shelves. Luckily for all of us, our resident Leonard fan Joe Hartlaub was able to speed read the book and think up some good questions. Find out about his Rwanda research, two new characters, his next novel and more. Now, here's Dutch... TBR: It was around 20 years ago that you were considered America's most popular unknown novelist. That is only half-true now; your novels not only transcend the popular classifications but are also considered a genre unto themselves. This has been in a gradual process of course, but when did you feel that you had turned the corner as far as popular recognition was concerned?

Elmore Leonard: 10 ways to "remain invisible" in your writing
Merlin Mann Easy on the Adverbs, Exclamation Points and Especially Hooptedoodle 10 tips These are rules I’ve picked up along the way to help me remain invisible when I’m writing a book, to help me show rather than tell what’s taking place in the story. If you have a facility for language and imagery and the sound of your voice pleases you, invisibility is not what you are after, and you can skip the rules. Still, you might look them over. A few to give you the flavor: Never use a verb other than “said” to carry dialogue. Keep your exclamation points under control. My most important rule is one that sums up the 10.

Executive summary: Crime novelist, including Swag Military service: US Navy (1943-46) Elmore Leonard is the author of numerous westerns and hard-boiled crime novels. Leonard grew up in Detroit and served in the US Navy before attending the University of Michigan. Friends called him "Dutch", a nickname that somehow stuck on Leonard since childhood, named from a pitcher with the Washington Senators, Emil "Dutch" Leonard. He married in 1949, and eventually fathered five children. He began supporting his increasingly large family by writing advertising copy, mostly for Chevrolet. In his spare time he wrote Westerns, but they did not bring in enough money to live on. In 1951, Leonard was ready to quit the ad business and concentrate on writing full-time, but his agent talked him out of it. After the success of the Paul Newman 's dramatization of Leonard's Hombre , he finally quit his day job.

The Elmore Leonard Interview
By Christopher Heard
Elmore “Dutch” Leonard
is one of the most prolific of modern day crime writers. He is now deep into his seventies and has managed to retain the reputation as being one of the coolest writers on earth. He has had over 30 different movies and television shows made from his works, some good ( Jackie Brown Out of Sight Get Shorty ), some bad ( The Big Bounce ), and some ugly ( Stick ). Leonard is known for his naturally eccentric characters and dialogue. He began his life as a novelist in the fifties by writing pulp western novels, and good ones too – Hombre Forty Lashes Less One The Bounty Hunters just to name a few. But then, when the market for westerns dried up, Leonard turned to crime fiction.

From All Movie Guide: Without question, one of the 20th century's premier writers of crime fiction, Elmore Leonard 's fascinatingly seedy characters and penchant for snappy, natural dialogue has found the longtime writer climbing from pulp Western author to one of the most sought after scribes of the Hollywood scene. Though it would take nearly two decades for filmmakers to accurately capture the gritty, but humorous, tone that he had mastered through his many years putting pen to paper, the runaway success of director

Some of my readers are going to ask, "What's he doing in Africa?" wondering what led me to open PAGAN BABIES in Rwanda, of all places. Well, I did set a book in Cuba, half of a book in Italy, and opened another in the Dominican Republic. (Shame on you if those settings don't sound familiar; it means you haven't read the books.) Now Rwanda because I became fascinated with the idea of one of my characters witnessing the mass murder that took place there not so long ago. Soon enough the plot moves to Detroit, but it's Rwanda that sets the stage for the con games that take place in what has become my hometown.

Elmore Leonard’s Men of Few Words, in a Few Words
    Richard Foreman/Lionsgate
By TERRENCE RAFFERTY Published: September 2, 2007 IN the short story “3:10 to Yuma,” written by a Detroit advertising copywriter named Elmore Leonard and published in Dime Western Magazine in 1953, an ordinary man takes on the extraordinarily dangerous job of escorting — all by his lonesome — a notorious outlaw to federal prison, and does it courageously and well. The story occupies a grand total of 15 pages in “The Complete Western Stories of Elmore Leonard” (2004), and what’s striking about it is how little explanation Mr. Leonard feels compelled to offer for his hero’s grit and competence, and how little too the reader misses it.
