Biography
LENNOX, CHARLOTTE (RAMSAY) (1720-1804). —Was b. in New York, of which her f., Colonel Ramsay, was Governor. She wrote a novel, The Female Quixote (1752), which had considerable vogue in its day. Her other writings—novels, translations, and a play—are now forgotten. She was befriended by Dr. Johnson. Mrs. Thrale (q.v.) said that "everybody admired Mrs. L., but nobody liked her."

In the revolutionary decade of the 1790s, a few ambitious women writers such as Mary Wollstonecraft,
Mary Hays and Charlotte Smith, used the form of the novel as an ideological tool to address the
wrongs of women. Their revolutionary interventions compelled conservatives such as Polwhele to
feared was spreading in England . Ironically even the Jacobins failed to wholeheartedly embrace these
fellow Jacobin intellectual, philosopher and novelist; Godwin placed her within the double bind of
Jacobin women novelists can no longer be ignored by critical scholarship. In fact their radicalism often superseded the radical potential of the Jacobin male novelists because they championed their own sex even as they created a new empowering subjectivity. Undeniably this radical potential verged on being revolutionary potential in the oeuvre of Mary Wollstonecraft.   • Lennox, Charlotte Ramsay ), born in New York, was sent to England at the age of 15, and during her long life there won a literary reputation, mainly for her sentimental novels of manners. Her most successful work, The Female Quixote; or, The Adventures of Arabella (1752), however, burlesqued the lengthy French romances by telling of the adventures of a girl who molded her life on such works. She dramatized this as Angelica; or, Quixote in Petticoats The Life of Harriot Stuart The History of Henrietta Sophia (1762), and Euphemia (1790) resemble the romances she burlesqued in her satire, and the first and last are set partly in America.
