She was probably born in Gibraltar . Her father, James Ramsay, was a Scottish captain in the British Navy , and her mother was Scottish and Irish . She was baptised Barbara Ramsay. Very little direct evidence for her pre-public life is available, and biographers have extrapolated from her first novel elements that seem semi-autobiographical. She was, with her parents, in New York in 1738-1742, and at fifteen she accepted a position as a "companion" to the widow Mary Luckyn in London . A companion would be something above the position of servant but near it in function. When she arrived in London, however, she found that Mary Luckyn had gone insane, and so the position was withdrawn. She then served as the companion to Lady Isabella Finch. Her first volume of poetry was entitled Poems on Several Occasions

Charlotte Lennox
From LoveToKnow 1911
CHARLOTTE LENNOX (1720-1804), British writer, daughter of Colonel James Ramsay , lieutenant-governor of New York , was born in 1720. She went to London in 1735, and, being left unprovided for at her father's death, she began to earn her living by writing. She made some unsuccessful appearances on the stage and married in 1748. Samuel Johnson had an exaggerated admiration for her. "Three such women," he said, speaking of Elizabeth Carter Hannah More and Fanny Burney, "are not to be found; I know not where to find a fourth, except Mrs Lennox, who is superior to them all." Her chief works are: The Female Quixote; or the Adventures of Arabella (1752), a novel; Shakespear illustrated; or the novels and histories on which the plays. .. are founded (1753-1754), in which she argued that Shakespeare had spoiled the stories he borrowed for his plots by interpolating unnecessary intrigues and incidents; The Life of Harriot Stuart (1751), a novel; and The Sister, a comedy produced at Covent Garden (18th February 1769). This last was withdrawn after the first night, after a stormy reception, due, said Goldsmith, to the fact that its author had abused Shakespeare.

Literary Career
Though the facts of Charlotte Lennox's life are sketchy at best, the history of her writings is more easily described and widely known. Lennox was a poet of some renown early in her life, publishing her Poems on Several Occasions in 1747. The most famous of her poetic efforts, "The Art of Coquetry," appeared in 1750 in the Gentleman's Magazine . That poem, using the rhetoric of wars and battles in its recommendation of subtly artful behaviors, teaches young women to employ feminine wiles in order to subdue men to "their empire" and promises that such women will "controul the world by love," if they are careful not to fall in love themselves. Though presenting sentiments that would not have caused much stir if voiced by an Alexander Pope, Lennox's poem produced both praise and wrath. "The Art of Coquetry" prompted an adulatory poem "Advice to a Novice in Love, Occasioned by Reading the Art of Coquetry by Mrs. Charlotte Lennox." Bluestocking Elizabeth Carter, however, despised Lennox's message. Lennox displayed an early interest in the ways women wield power, even if she restricted her comment to a predictable sphere of influence and voiced frequently rehearsed ideologies of femininity. Of most significance to current estimations of Lennox's career is the fact that, during a time that was "rich in prose," she contributed a great deal of it to the public. Lennox wrote five (and possibly six) novels over the course of forty years, including

The Charlotte Lennox Page This page was inspired by the abysmal dearth of information on Charlotte Lennox on the Internet. Common wisdom has it that everything is on the Internet in an effort to sustain common wisdom, I offer this humble resource. To say that it is under construction is probably optimistic. It is, in any case, incomplete; I will try to nudge it towards completion in my (hah!) spare time.

Charlotte Ramsay Lennox -
Who She Was and Why You Should Care
Brief Bio The Female Quixote
Lennox managed (barely) to do what few of her contemporaries could, that is, to survive as a single woman on the profits of her own labors without going into service or prostitution. (Governessing was a kind of half-step above being a servant). Her struggles are sublimated into her best work, The Female Quixote A Room of One's Own and Three Guineas . In short, Lennox participated in transgenerational intellectual debates of great importance, and was a significant member of the tradition of British women writers.

This introduction is also available in a textonly version. Send comments and suggestions to Michael R.H. Owens The Life of Harriot Stuart, Written by Herself presents a complex and problematic view of self-creation in the eighteenth century. Within the novel, there is a constantly reoccurring theme of self-invention through fiction, which is echoed by the author's own use of the novel to shape her identity. Published in December of 1750, Harriot Stuart gained critical praise as a successor of Richardson's Clarissa The Female Quixote Despite these associations with the didactic tradition, Harriot Stuart's resemblance to it is only superficial. Although Harriot makes gestures toward repentance and acknowledgment of her faults, the work of the novel is not to redeem Harriot's coquetry through marriage, but rather allow her to control her own identity through the manipulation of language as both coquette and narrator. As coquette, Harriot Stuart uses the language of courtship to manipulate the perceptions of her male admirers. The object of the male gaze, traditionally considered a passive role, is a site of empowerment for the coquette as she exploits it to create and re-create herself in society's eyes. As narrator, Harriot uses the telling of her courtship as a vehicle of self-invention. In controlling the telling of her own history, she in effect reconstructs her identity.
