A Severed Wasp tells the story of Madame Vigneras, a retired pianist who finds herself developing unlikely relationships with the members of an Episcopal community in the heart of New York city. Vigneras hopes for a quiet retirement with time to come to terms with her past: Instead, she finds herself preparing to give a benefit concert at the Cathedral, and she quickly becomes embroiled in the fears, dramas, and problems of those around her. Somehow, amidst a strange mix of new friends, disturbing phone calls, and daydreams about her youth, she not only unravels the truth about strange events at the Cathedral, but also finds some peace about her past. But despite the smooth writing, I found myself somewhat bored with the story. I felt as if I were attending one of the numerous dinner parties described in the book; I was mildly interested in the people around me, but ultimately just wanted the event to be over. In the end, my reading experience with

'Have Courage and Joy' A s she sits behind a modest wooden desk on a well-worn, creaking office chair, you would never guess that this award-winning author is well past the legal age for retirement. As she strokes a stray cat that adopted her, a characteristically gentle Madeleine L’Engle makes it clear that she has more projects in her head than time in her day. L’Engle, 81, is surrounded by what she loves best—abundant walls of wooden shelves decked with well-worn and new books, interposed with photos of her loved ones, cards and some religious symbols. Behind her, a church-style tasseled banner simply proclaims, “THE WORD.” Across from her, a homey seating area invites rest next to a large fireplace, its mantel also stacked high with books. And next to her, L’Engle’s personal assistant returns calls and letters from the countless requests for national and international speaking engagements, interviews and manuscripts that she receives.

Major characters introduced in this series include:
Dr. Alexander (Alex) Murry - The father of Meg, Sandy, Dennys and Charles Wallace, Dr. Alex Murry is an astrophysicist, researcher into the mysteries of the space/time continuum, specifically five-dimensional means of travel between planets. The second known U.S. government researcher to attempt to "tesser" to Mars, Dr. Murry accidentally transferred himself to the planet Camazotz, where he was imprisoned until rescued by his daughter Meg, his youngest son Charles Wallace and their friend Calvin O'Keefe. Over the years, Dr. Murry has been consulted by more than one U.S. President on a variety of subjects, some of them having little apparent connection to Dr. Murry's chosen field (but appearances are deceiving). The loving and beloved husband of Dr. Kate Murry, Alex suffers from arthritis in his later years.

40. CWHF-Madeline L'Engle
Short biography from Connecticut Women s Hall of Fame.
http://www.cwhf.org/hall/lengle/lengle.htm
AUTHOR BORN: FIELD: WRITERS AND JOURNALISTS FROM: GOSHEN For More Information, Please Visit: Madeleine L'Engle's Homepage Madeline L'Engle One of the most respected and loved children's authors in America, she received the 1963 Newberry Medal for A Wrinkle in Time. Madeleine L'Engle was born in New York City, the only child of a foreign correspondent and a gifted pianist. She attended boarding school in Switzerland and graduated cum laude from Smith College in 1941. Madeleine wrote her first novel, The Small Rain (1945) while acting for a New York theater group. She and her future husband, Hugh Franklin, were on tour together when they met and married. After publishing several additional novels while raising three children, the Franklin family moved to western Connecticut and opened a general store. It was here that she experienced the communal life which would inspire much of her work, including “The Austin Family” series, beginning with Meet the Austins, one of the American Library Association's Notable Children's Books of 1960. Though L'Engle had difficulty finding publishers for her works in the 1950's, with A Wrinkle in Time, her career as a writer took off. The book quickly became a popular and critical success winning the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award as well as the Newberry Medal for "the most distinguished contribution to children's literature" of 1962. Two companion novels, A Wind in the Door (1973) and A Swiftly Tilting Planet (1978), completed what came to be known as The Time Trilogy, a series heralded for its creative blend of fairy tale, science fiction, good old-fashioned story telling, and serious themes of family love and moral responsibility.
