ARTICLE
Utilizing Christian theology as a framework to explore the nature between good and evil and the necessity of basic human values, L'Engle asks big questions about personal responsibility, integrity, the dangers of mindless conformity, faith, and the possibility of life in other universes. She writes, "One physicist says that the big question is: are we alone in the universe or not?" The very thought of life in other universes propels L'Engle to explore that great macrocosm beyond us.
In addition to her science fiction and fantasy novels about time travel, L'Engle writes coming-of-age, suspense and mystery novels for teens, mainstream adult novels, poetry, and plays. Considered one of America's foremost creators of fantasy and science fiction, she was awarded the 1998 Margaret A. Edwards Award, honoring her lifetime contributions to the YA genre.

Madeleine L’Engle, Writer of Children’s Classics, Is Dead at 88

By DOUGLAS MARTIN Published: September 8, 2007 Madeleine L’Engle , an author whose childhood fables, religious meditations and fanciful science fiction transcended both genre and generation, most memorably in her children’s classic “A Wrinkle in Time,” died on Thursday in Litchfield, Conn. She was 88. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image George M. Gutierrez In the Dictionary of Literary Biography, Marygail G. Parker notes “a peculiar splendor” in Ms. L’Engle’s oeuvre, and some of that splendor is owed to sheer literary range. Her works included poetry, plays, autobiography and books on prayer, and almost all were deeply, quixotically personal. But it was in her vivid children’s characters that readers most clearly glimpsed her passionate search for answers to the questions that mattered most. She sometimes spoke of her writing as if she were taking dictation from her subconscious.

L'Engle's last wrinkle
Madeleine L'Engle wrote children's books that were too complicated for grown-ups. I'll miss her. By Laurel Snyder
  • Share I got the news Friday morning, hunched over my laptop in a coffee shop, and it forced me out of myself, tossed me sharply back in my seat. I took a little breath. I said, "Oh!" a little too loudly. I disturbed the young man in an Atlanta Falcons T-shirt sitting quietly beside me. Madeleine L'Engle was dead. Perhaps this sounds grandiose, but I'm serious I felt the loss deeply, personally. I was bewildered at the death of a woman I'd never met. Because, to me, Madeleine L'Engle was more than a writer. She was what a sixth grader in an English class taking hold of her masterpiece, "A Wrinkle in Time" might call a theme . For those of us who write for children, she was a gold standard, a symbol. She was an example of what one could accomplish without succumbing to the easy tropes and obvious forms of fantasy or young adult or science fiction. Search Authors Search Books About Madeleine L'Engle Madeleine L'Engle is the author of more than sixty books for all ages, among them the beloved A Wrinkle in Time , awarded the Newbery Medal; A Ring of Endless Light , a Newbery Honor Book; A Swiftly Tilting Planet , winner of the American Book Award; and the Austin family series of which Troubling a Star is the fifth book. L'Engle was named the 1998 recipient of the Margaret A. Edwards award, honoring her lifetime contribution in writing for teens. Ms. L'Engle was born in 1918 in New York City, late in her parents' lives, an only child growing up in an adult world. Her father was a journalist who had been a foreign correspondent, and although he suffered from mustard gas poisoning in World War I, his work still took him abroad a great deal. Her mother was a musician; the house was filled with her parents' friends: artists, writers, and musicians. "Their lives were very full and they didn't really have time for a child," she says. "So I turned to writing to amuse myself."

Hi, I'm Karen Funk Blocher. I built this website to help Madeleine L'Engle's readers figure out what books they want to read or buy for their collections, and where to get them. This website can also be helpful to people with questions about Madeleine L'Engle herself and students with papers to write. BUT: I'm NOT here to help you get out of reading a book for school, or to write part of your paper for you! If you have questions about Madeleine L'Engle or her books, please explore this website before you email me your questions. There are lots of links in the table of contents below to help you find what you need. Most of the questions I receive are already answered on the FAQ page . If you want basic information about the novels in each series and in what order to read them, start with my novels page. Another major resource is Wikipedia. for various reasons, most of my recent writing about Madeleine L'Engle has been concentrated there.
If after you read this website you still have a couple of specific questions for me, you can email me through a link at the bottom of this page, and I'll answer if I caneventually. (You'll get a faster response from my main email address of mavarin at aol.com.) Thanks, God bless you, and enjoy!

About the Author
Madeleine L’Engle stands among the most beloved authors in contemporary American literature. For innumerable readers, she is a spiritual “mother” offering comfort and direction through her voluminous offering of lyrical fiction, essays and poetry. Indeed, her life and her vocation are inseparable. “When I stop writing, I’ll die,” she states. Here L’Engle recounts her progress: I was born in New York City on the snowy night of November 29, 1918, and lived in New York City for the next twelve years, with a jaunt or two to Europe. My father, Charles Wadsworth Camp, was a writer and my mother, Madeleine Hall Barnett Camp, a pianist, and the house was always full of artists of one kind or another. When I was twelve we moved to Europe, where we lived mostly in France and Switzerland, and I went to a Swiss boarding school. Then followed school in South Carolina and Smith College. After graduating from Smith in 1941, I took an apartment in Greenwich Village with three other girls, two of whom were aspiring actresses. Because I wanted to be a writer, I was the lucky one to get jobs in the theater (I thought it was an excellent school for writers and it is). When I was in Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard I met actor Hugh Franklin, and I married him a year later. At his request I withdrew from Actor’s Equity and in 1952 he also retired from the theater “forever.”
