Borges: Influence and References
Stanislaw Lem From: Pablo R. Mora, pmora@wam.umd.edu Another example may be Stanislaw Lem. His book Perfect Vacuum is a critique of imaginary books, is inspired in Borges, as explicitly acknowledged in the introduction. The last two pieces are some of the most "Borgesian" stuff not written by Borges that I have ever seen. Also interesting is a clever but exceedingly harsh analysis of Borges's work in Microworlds, From: Greg Cardin, carden@simplecom.net Another book possibly influenced by Borges is Stanislaw Lem's Memoirs Found in a Bathtub, which is sort of a blend of "Babylon Lottery" and "Library of Babel," with a twist of Kafka, Novalis, near mystical paranoia, and a somewhat Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Cat's Cradle sci-fi style. My favorite Lem book. From: Christos Tsatsoulis, ctsats@hotmail.com I think that the very idea in Solaris can be seen, in a first manifestation, in Borges' "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius." I am talking about the "hrönir." The visiting creatures in Solaris are nothing else but "alive" hrönir....

A major author in 20th century Science Fiction, Lem explored many of the major themes of the genre: man among machines, alien communications, and the limitations of man in understanding his place in the universe. Many of his books echoed cold war themes during the 1960s. Perhaps Lem's best know work was Solaris , published in 1961 and twice made into films.

    So long, Stanisław Lem
    March 27, 2006
Stanisław Lem, great Polish author of literatury fantastyczny , has died in Krakow at age 84. His science fiction, written while living under communism, was wonderfully different from the general mode in the West, focusing on humanistic aspects of technology and our concepts of the future. He also had an amazing sense of humor. Unfortunately his obits seem to focus on his writing a book filmed by Stephen Soderbergh. In his honor, here is where I suggest starting if you want to discover Lem: You can, of course, read Solaris , although contrary to what filmmakers would have you believe, it is not about the redeeming power of love; if anything, it is about the impossibility of communication, a slightly different topic. Dziękuje, i do widzenia.

Obituaries: Stanislaw Lem, 84, writer of science fiction
Ben Sisario Published: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 29, 2006 The cause was heart failure, his secretary, Wojciech Zemek, told The Associated Press. Mr. Lem was a giant of mid-20th-century science fiction, in a league with Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov and Philip K. Dick. And he addressed many of the themes they did: the meaning of human life among superintelligent machines, the frustrations of communicating with aliens, the likelihood that mankind could understand a universe in which it was but a speck. His books have been translated into at least 35 languages and have sold 27 million copies. What drew the admiration of many of his fellow writers was the intensity with which he studied the limitations of humanity, in ways that could be both awed and pessimistic.

He worked as a mechanic during the war and later returned to his medical studies but did not take his final exams out of fear that his services would be needed in the military. Love and Tensor Algebra
from "The Cyberiad" by Stanislaw Lem
Come, let us hasten to a higher plane
Where dyads tread the fairy fields of Venn,
Their indices bedecked from one to n
Commingled in an endless Markov chain!
Come, every frustrum longs to be a cone
And every vector dreams of matrices.
Hark to the gentle gradient of the breeze:
It whispers of a more ergodic zone.
In Riemann, Hilbert or in Banach space
Let superscripts and subscripts go their ways.
Our asymptotes no longer out of phase, We shall encounter, counting, face to face. I'll grant thee random access to my heart, Thou'lt tell me all the constants of thy love; And so we two shall all love's lemmas prove, And in our bound partition never part. For what did Cauchy know, or Christoffel, Or Fourier, or any Bools or Euler, Wielding their compasses, their pens and rulers, Of thy supernal sinusoidal spell? Cancel me not - for what then shall remain? Abscissas some mantissas, modules, modes, A root or two, a torus and a node: The inverse of my verse, a null domain. Ellipse of bliss, converge, O lips divine!

    72. Nancy Street - Hobbies - Science Fiction - Stanisław Lem
This page is my personal tribute to the Polish author Stanis aw lem, who I believe to be one of the greatest writers in the science fiction and fantasy
    http://www.orthogonal.com.au/hobby/sf/authors/lem/
    Home Hobbies Sci-Fi Lem
Preamble Since I discovered Lem in 1979, his writings have been my constant companion and a source of relaxation and inspiration, and he slowly has become my yardstick of SF quality. Almost every time I read a book, or see a movie or TV show on SF I find myself thinking "Lem has already written about that, and it was better". Lem's works must surely strike a resonance in the minds of people who have an interest in science. Lem has a well-rounded knowledge of many areas of science and he weaves his polymath skills into his works in such a way that they have more depth than is normally found in the SF, fantasy and detective output of other more famous specialist authors in these genres. This is a hobby "fan" page, so I will welcome feedback of any type regarding errors or omissions. Even disputes about my opinions will be welcome. Measuring Lem Who is the greatest science fiction writer? That's a simple question that would surely cause heated arguments amongst fans of the genre. Perhaps it's a bit like asking who is the prettiest woman or who is the funniest comedian. To be a bit more rigorous, if the greatness diversity is a key attribute of greatness, then Lem can surpass many of the legends of science fiction.

      • My pass had disappeared. Not that I believed for a moment that this was an accident; in fact, I had suspected for some time now that the Cosmic Command, obviously no longer able to supervise every assignment on an individual basis when there were literally trillions of matters in its charge, had switched over to a random system. The assumption would be that every document, circulating endlessly from desk to desk, must eventually hit upon the right one. A time-consuming procedure, perhaps, but one that would never fail.
