Stanislaw Lem
Philip K. Dick: A Visionary Among the Charlatans
Translated from the Polish by Robert Abernathy No one in his right mind seeks the psychological truth about crime in detective stories. Whoever seeks such truth will turn rather to Crime and Punishment . In relation to Agatha Christie, Dostoevsky constitutes a higher court of appeal, yet no one in his right mind will condemn the English author's stories on this account. They have a right to be treated as the entertaining thrillers they are, and the tasks Dostoevsky set himself are foreign to them. If anyone is dissatisfied with SF in its role as an examiner of the future and of civilization, there is no way to make an analogous move from literary oversimplifications to full-fledged art, because there is no court of appeal from this genre. There would be no harm in this, save that American SF, exploiting its exceptional status, lays claim to occupy the pinnacles of art and thought. One is annoyed by the pretentiousness of a genre which fends off accusations of primitivism by pleading its entertainment character and then, once such accusations have been silenced, renews its overweening claims. By being one thing and purporting to be another, SF promotes a mystification which, moreover, goes on with the tacit consent of readers and public. The development of interest in SF at American universities has, contrary to what might have been expected, altered nothing in this state of affairs. In all candor it must be said, though one risk perpetrating a crime

Dialogs
from the 1st German edition translated by F.P. In this work, which is on the same lines as his "Summa Technologiae" (1976) and "Fantastics and Futurology" (1977), Stanislaw Lem newly creates the Socratic dialogs, in a time in which the traditional topics of philosophy, theology, and social theory undergo changes in their presentation, mainly under the influence of cybernetics. These dialogs seek to explore and to evaluate the future consequences which follow from the further improvement of computer building - from a possible eternal existence of the individual to the construction of new social systems. His work became critically acclaimed, for example: 'Dialogues' (1957) and 'Summa technologiae' (1964). Today his work is among the top rank of sci-fi work in the world, translated into many languages and many times awarded. His works include: 'Solaris' (1961), 'Robots' fairy tale' (1964), 'Cyberiada' (1965) 'Stories about Pirx the pilot" (1968), 'Local vision' (1982), 'Peace on earth' (1987).

His works inspired other authors. His most renowned and influential work, Solaris, inspired two acclaimed film directors on both sides of the Atlantic, USSR Sergei Tarkowski and US Steven Sonderbergh, who tried to translate this novel into the language of the cinema, neither of them fully succeeding. In total, 15 films were based on his prose.  His works were translated into over 40 languages, with 27 million copies sold over the world.

Solaris by Stanislaw Lem
We take off into the cosmos, ready for anything ... Modesty forbids us to say so, but there are times when we think pretty well of ourselves. ... We are humanitarian and chivalrous; we don't want to enslave other races, we simply want to bequeath them our values and take over their heritage in exchange ... We think of ourselves as the Knights of the Holy Contact. This is another lie. We are only seeking Man. We have no need for other worlds. We need mirrors. We don't know what to do with other worlds. A single world, our own, suffices us; but we can't accept it for what it is. We are searching for an ideal image of our own world: we go in quest of a planet, of a civilization superior to our own but developed on the basis of a prototype of our primeval past. "Solaris" seems to be a harsh meditation on the notion of first contact. In the various movie adaptations of this novel, the notion of humanism in this story is often hailed. `Science-fiction with a heart' the maudlin reviewers often cry out. It is this anthropomorphic viewpoint that Stanislaw Lem assails most directly in this novel. Many works of science-fiction often assume as given that humans have unlimited potential, and that given a chance we will be able to understand everything in the universe. Thinking otherwise is often treated as an affront to the often unstated assumption of humanity's limitless potential. "Solaris" offers a rarely presented point of view: even if the scientific viewpoint is accurate, it might not be enough. We might be too hard wired to a particular view to comprehend certain truths. It may be that we are selfish in a way that is so central to our makeup that science might have boundaries that we cannot truly accept as true.

  • Polish writer, Stanislaw Lem, was born in 1921. A doctor's son, Lem studied medicine until World War II and the Nazi occupation of Poland when he worked as a car mechanic and a welder and joined the anti-German resistance. Lem later resumed his medical studies, worked as a research assistant, and wrote stories in his spare time. Much of Stanislaw Lem's work was science fiction in nature, and he was awarded an honorary membership in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1973. He was stripped of his membership three years later after describing American science fiction as kitsch.

Lem came to identify himself as an atheist, saying he did so for "moral reasons." I am of the opinion that you would recognize a creator by his creation, and the world appears to me to be put together in such a painful way that I prefer to believe that it was not created by anyone than to think that somebody created this intentionally" (L. Remembering Stanislaw Lem
The literary presence of Stanislaw Lem will be missed very, very much. He passed away on March 27 at age 84. Most writers work within the genre conventions of their chosen literary traditions. Lem exploded the boundaries of his. The hands of his imagination worked the clay of science fiction, satire, and socialist realism and made brilliantly fired, wholly new creations.
Since building our library I've appreciated his works all over again for the way they re-imagine books and peoples' relationships to them. His anthology of reviews of imaginary books

His enthusiasm for Vladimir Putin pace science fiction is mostly progressive , have in fact driven the main currents of science-fiction even at its best, from Wells to Cordwainer Smith to Mark Geston. The opposing sf trend that includes such people as Delany, Joanna Russ, and the also sadly departed Octavia Butler is so drastically different in its focus from the dominant trend that it might as well be another genre. The author of great Scieocial Fiction , how I would like to call his science fiction with social, political and philoshophical aspects, wrote the novel Solaris and pieces like The Futurological Congress and The Star Diaries . During the last 15 years or so he didn't write science fiction anymore and focused on actual scientifical and political issues instead. The German Telepolis online magazine has a special archive of articles in German he wrote between 1997 and 2001. For details of his life and work visit the official Stanislaw Lem site. Update: Somewhat macabre, but this is how Stanislaw Lem himself sketched a science fiction author ... I wonder what the meaning of zapasowa noga is, noga seems to be leg , and zapasowa something like alternate , so alternate leg , spare leg? Seems to make sense.

By shady character / September 13th, 2007 / Atheist of the Week 6 comments Ever read Polish science fiction? What about Polish science fiction written by an atheist, for whom arguing theology with Karol Wojtyla (better known as Pope John Paul II) was a favorite pastime? The author in question is our Atheist of the Week, Stanislaw Lem, born September 12, 1921 in Lwow, Poland. Of Jewish descent, Lem was raised as a Roman Catholic. He was a complete rascal, however, regardless of obligatory familial cultural traditions: From His official webpage: Like many of our featured non-theists, Lem reached his coming of age during the tumult of World War II. Despite his Jewish descent, he survived the Nazi Occupation with false documents. As a young adult, he studied the practice of medicine and took occupancy at a scientific institution as a research assistant.
