Social Research , Fall 1995 v62 n3 p691(20) Abstract: A better understanding of consciousness in humans is needed before the discussion can be extended validly to animal consciousness. Consciousness requires a certain kind of informational organization that does not seem to be 'hard-wired' in humans, but is instilled by human culture. Moreover, consciousness is not a black-or-white, all-or-nothing type of phenomenon, as is often assumed. The differences between humans and other species are so great that speculations about animal consciousness seem ungrounded. Many authors simply assume that an animal like a bat has a point of view, but there seems to be little interest in exploring the details involved. ARE animals conscious? The way we are? Which species, and why? What is it like to be a bat, a rat, a vulture, a whale? But perhaps we really do not want to know the answers to these questions. We should not despise the desire to be kept in ignorance are there not many facts about yourself and your loved ones that you would wisely choose not to know? Speaking for myself, I am sure that I would go to some lengths to prevent myself from learning al! the secrets of those around me whom they found disgusting, whom they secretly adored, what crimes and follies they had committed, or thought I had committed! Learning all these facts would destroy my composure, cripple my attitude towards those around me. Perhaps learning too much about our animal cousins would have a similarly poisonous effect on our relations with them. But if so, then let us make a frank declaration to that effect and drop the topic, instead of pursuing any further the pathetic course upon which many are now embarked.

Noam Avram Chomsky was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 7, 1928. He received his early education at Oak Lane Country Day School and Central High School, Philadelphia. He continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania where he studied linguistics, mathematics, and philosophy. In 1955, he received his Ph. D. from the University of Pennsylvania, however, most of the research leading to this degree was done at Harvard University between 1951 and 1955. Since receiving his Ph. D., Chomsky has taught at Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he now holds the Ferrari P. Ward Chair of Modern Language and Linguistics. Noam was married to Carol Schatz on December 24, 1949 and has two children. Methods in Structural Linguistics Noam has always been interested in politics, and it is said that politics has brought him into the linguistics field. His political tendencies toward socialism and anarchism are a result of what he calls "the radical Jewish community in New York." Since 1965 he has become one of the leading critics of U.S. foreign policy. He published a book of essays called American Power and the New Mandarins which is considered to be one of the most substantial arguments ever against American involvement in Vietnam.

March 25, 2005 @ 03:01 PM Comments [1] Server Problems - HDD You will have to pay me a very, very, very large sum of money if you EVER expect me to use a new piece of Promise hardware again. I will never, ever buy, recommend, suggest, or even MENTION their products to anyone. (I will spend that money on a new machine with Adaptec drive controllers in it.) Promise Technology Inc ( www.promise.com ) has simply disappointed me for the last time. All the countless hours of wasted time, headaches, frustration... When they tell you that only ONE of their cards will work in a computer, they mean it. Ridiculous. I had a Fast Trak TX2000 and a FastTrak S150. This problem manifested itself as a SCSI HDD problem. Somehow, having both of those cards caused my onboard SCSI Adaptec controller to fail. Fine - its not their fault for my wasted hours! =) So I put TWO Adaptec 1210SA cards in a server and boot. No problems! They even TALK to each other and I can configure BOTH from within ONE BIOS interface. Tightness.

Does an individual having two cerebral hemispheres have, in some important sense, two brains rather than only one? This "important sense" deserves to be made more explicit at the outset. It includes, I believe, the following: that whatever may be for neurologists the meaning of the psychological term "mind," the number of brains in an individual is the same as the number of minds. If this equivalence of numerosity were not agreed upon, we might well spend the rest of our time arguing that question as well as others, such as: What meanings are possible for the word "mind"? Without demeaning such perennial questions, I will take it for granted, at least for this paper, that what we can learn about mind also tells us about brain and vice versa. In other words, the mentalistic and physiologic are two different descriptions of the same underlying reality.
