Tanith Lee At an early school, when I was about 5, they asked what we wanted to be when we grew up. Everyone said silly things, and I said I wanted to be an actress. So that was what I wanted to be, but what I was, of course, was a writer. Tanith Lee Genre categories are irrelevant. I dislike them, but I do not have the casting vote. Tanith Lee I also love Disney, and will defend doing so, because there's so much in those films and I don't care if it's stereotyped. Tanith Lee I just love writing. It's magical, it's somewhere else to go, it's somewhere much more dreadful, somewhere much more exciting. Somewhere I feel I belong, possibly more than in the so-called real world. Tanith Lee I like films, or some films, and would be intrigued to see my work on screen.

Craig L. Gidney The Indian jungle overtakes a proper English mansion. A grief-stricken man carries a dead horse up to his rose-strewn marriage bed. The feminine personification of Death haunts three artists in turn of the century Paris. A man marries a white weasel. A lowly maid finds a beautiful mask, and becomes an owl. A ghost child walks the canals of 18th Century Venice. These are but some of the haunting images in the fiction of Tanith Lee. An enormous cathedral, winter had been constructed in the forest, its masonry of ice, the organ peal of wind. The tiny artisans of the tribes of fox and the ermine had excavated and ornamented the aisles, printed its paving. Its windows were paned with cold mauve and blue and yellowish skies and the deadly reds of frozen sunsets. The cathedral endured. Then spring, the destroying angel, stalked the wilderness, sword in hand. Spring smote the cathedral. Its roofs of snow collapsed. After the thaw, green trickled into the arteries of the wood, and spears of sunlight divided the trees one from another. Harry Potter and Lemony Snicket by thirty years, these works show a playful facility with word, image and character, and a thematic obsession with examining the subtexts of fairytales and folklore that would be developed later on.

The Birthgrave is one of my favourite novels. I was surprised to discover that it was Tanith Lee's first novel, as it is complex and rich, and very mature. To my mind it is clearly the work of well practised author. There are some that you go back to over and over, and rediscover the little nuances and details that you have forgotten since you last read it. This is one of those, and although it has an outstanding plot, knowing where the story is going never lessens the experience of reading it through again. It is set in a barbarian society, full of classic sword and sorcery. The main character remains nameless through the story, but is referred to with various nicknames and titles. One of them is Uastis. She fights like a man, with skill and strength, yet spends much of the book overpowered by men. She has terrifying powers, which she cannot use to help her or which desert her at the wrong times. Uastis is a fascinating character, old and young, cruel and compassionate, she encompasses all potential aspects of herself at some point in the book. She is a product of the society where she lives, and yet she views their innate beliefs about her place as a woman with contempt, even if the woman they see is a Goddess. Uastis has a quest, she must find her soul-kin the jade. Without it, she will never come into her true power or know herself. Yet she doesn't seem to search for it except when goaded. Seeing a jade necklace, she wants it, even though it is not the jade she seeks. Instead she is thrown about on the whim of others and by circumstance, unable to grasp control long enough to search thoroughly.

Tanith Lee "Tanith Lee was born 19 September 1947 in London, England. Her parents Bernard and Hylda Lee were ballroom dancers. Lee attended a number of primary schools. Following the completion of her secondary education, she was employed in a variety of jobs, including file clerk, assistant librarian, shop assistant and waitress. She also attended art college for one year, but quickly came to the conclusion that she would rather express herself through words than pictures. "Tanith Lee has won or been nominated for a variety of awards, including the World Fantasy Award, the August Derleth Award and the Nebula. She has appeared as Guest of Honour at a number of science fiction conventions, including Boskone XVIII in Boston in 1981, and the 1984 World Fantasy Convention in Ottawa. "In 1987, she met John Kaiine, a British writer and artist. The couple married in 1992 and currently live in the south of England." (Daughter of the Night) Red As Blood or Tales from the Sisters Grimmer (DAW Books, 1983) "Red As Blood is subtitled Tales From the Sisters Grimmer and indeed these fairy stories are far darker than the tales that inspired them. Darker, yet more real. Tanith Lee explores traditional fairy tales in a nontraditional way, from a different perspective, one full of passion, far kinder to women, and imbued with Lee's customary dark eroticism. This book belongs on the shelf with the Grimm Brothers, and yet fills a long ignored niche, a niche where pretty little girls are no longer exclusively victims and where princes are not necessarily charming or heroic." Winter Moon by Mercedes Lackey, Tanith Lee, C.E. Murphy
Picked this up at the library mostly for the Tanith Lee story - I haven't read anything new by her since the Venus series. But I found that actually the least appealing - stylistically it reminded me of her earlier writings, like The Birthgrave , which I didn't like as much. The Lackey had sympathetic characters, engaging writing, minimal plot and vaguely drawn setting, which is par for most of her writing. But the third, by C. E. Murphy, whom I haven't read before, was good - urban, slightly off-kilter setting, gritty supernatural stuff, strong characters.
Looking Tanith Lee up on Amazon, I see that someone's bringing out a two-volume compilation of selected stories. Must look for. Posted by Kristi Thompson at 10:23 AM Labels: Fantasy

White As Snow by Tanith Lee
I have continued my reading in Terri Windling's Fairy Tale Series with this adaptation of the tale of Snow White. I have dreaded writing about Tanith Lee's White As Snow . I found the book almost repellent.
The story opens with Arpazia, a young princess, facing the conquest of her father's city and her own certain death. She attempts to escape and is captured by the enemy king. After he attacks her, he decides to make her his queen. She bears his daughter Candacis, who is quickly rejected by her numbed mother and ignored by her brutal father. Arpazia finds some pleasure in life again when she becomes involved in the pagan fertility plays held at night in the woods. When her daughter becomes old enough to usurp Arpazia's role in these rites, Arpazia pays someone to kill her.
Lee combines the Snow White story with the Greek myth of Persphone, Hades and Ceres. Snow White (Candacis) is conflated with Persephone, and the queen who seeks her death is also her mother, Ceres, searching for her throughout the world. Names accrue around the characters as the story goes on, until each character has several. This serves to depersonalize the character, so that the mythic role they play becomes more important than their individual identities. The inescapability of fate and the inevitable repetition of pagan cycles features largely. The magic in this story only highlights its despair. There is neither hope nor solace in this version of Snow White.
