From SCIFIPEDIA Tanith Lee is a prolific and talented writer of dark fantasy, horror, and science fictionthough much of her work blurs genre distinctions, and all of it maintains a high literary standard. Born September 19 in London England , she first began to be published in the early 1970s and has since built an impressive, varied body of work. All of her work is distinguished by her prose, vivid, beautiful, and trenchant, and by her far-roving imagination. The story goes that she didn’t learn to read until she was eightand began to write at the age of nine, spurred on by the many fairy tales and fantastic legends her mother had always made up to tell her. Her first major publications in England were of children’s fantasies; her adult novel The Birthgrave did not find a home until she queried DAW Books in America. It was published in and followed by two sequels; between then and

I confess that I am surprised that Tanith Lee didn't just combine the three narratives of the Unicorn trilogy into one longer book. Such a longer book would still have been under 600 pages (assuming Red Unicorn is as short as its predecessors - I'm waiting to see if the Library can get hold of a copy for me).

The Official Tanith Lee Page
January 2008 Hello everyone - a belated message from Tanith Lee ( who's she? We just do vaguely remember this was her web site)... Very cluttered year.
That's my excuse.
If you still do recall who I am, you might look for new stories with Asimov's H.P. Lovecrat Magazine Weird Tales , and from the Norilana/Leda imprint. Plus a new Flat Earth tale - The Snake - to come in Realms of Fantasy I will put on more very soon. But in the mean time have a very Happy New Year!
ps ~ I enclose a very short unpublished fantasy story. Short Story - for Christmas Cynics
BATTLE
The knight rode for miles across the wasteland before he found the dragon he had come to slay. It was a huge beast, black as a burnt coal. The moment it saw him it breathed out a blast of flame, they ran together, roaring. Due however to the dragon's impervious scales, the knight could do it no harm. Also, due to the knight's excellent and fire-resistant armour, (a magic potion had been smeared on it), neither could the dragon harm the man. The sun sank. The red sky cooled to darkest blue and a moon rose like a blind white mirror.

Dark Dance I find that if you mention Tanith Lee, people jump to conclusions. They've all read something; but for one person it was the 'fantasy' novels Storm Lord and The Birthgrave . An acquaintance knew her by the 'children's' book The Winter Players . Then there's the one who's read The Book of the Damned and Sabella , and keeps raving that Anne Rice doesn't know what she's talking about, these are vampires. Same acquaintance discovered Sabella in the Children's section of a book store, presumably by virtue of it's 'novella' size. Suffice to say, Tanith Lee has written much more and more varied than what you or I have read. Ms Lee was gracious enough to give written answers to our questions. Read on, and find yourself

Tales from the Flat Earth is a complex work composed of five volumes, published over a ten-year period: Night's Master Death's Master Delusion's Master Delirium's Mistress (1986), and Night's Sorceries (1987). It is likely that Tanith Lee did not originally envision it as a unified work. When the first three were published, the subtitle for the first and third was An Adult Fantasy ; the second, An Epic Novel of Adult Fantasy . The subtitle, Tales from the Flat Earth , first appeared with volume four. It was then elevated to the main title in a hardcover edition of the first three. While it is probably best to read them in order, the second can be read before the first without undue harm, since the stories are largely independent of each other and references in the second to the first are not very important. The fourth, however, is a continuation of the third. The fifth, which takes place at the same time as the fourth, is composed of material that seemingly did not fit into the fourth. The collection has the scope of J.R.R. Tolkien's

18. An SF Classic Is Being Forgotten...
A plea to DAW Books to reissue tanith lee s 1981 SF novel The Silver Metal Lover tanith lee s meditation on the nature of the soul in a electric age,
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Orion/9063/
(Skip ahead to the latest info about letter-writing campaigns) We have been hearing louder rumblings about that rumored film of TSML . Apparently a report in Variety has claimed that a screenplay has indeed been written, and the option has been picked up by an allegedly reputable company. I don't subscribe to Variety Variety for more details next time I'm at my local library. More on this as/if it develops... Meanwhile, while we're waiting for news, let's play a few rounds of "fantasy casting": who do you think would be 'just perfect' for Jane, Silver, Clovis, and the other characters? This is an all-write-in poll, so go ahead and make something up (although be warned, anyone answering "Leonardo DiCaprio" to any of the questions will be pitied harshly). Who knows, maybe someone "important" might even see this page and get to thinking...
HUZZAH! The Silver Metal Lover is back in print!
We'd like to thank all those who have offered words of encouragement. The new paperback edition has been published by Bantam/Spectra, and the cover illustration is at least not quite as ugly as on some of the other editions. ;) They seem to have worked from the DAW yellow-spined edition, however, as this printing contains the same false-correction in the "cogito ergo oops" passage...
