To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
A review by Phoebe Adams
T wo other novels have turned up which may be classified as respectable hammock reading, if anybody reads in hammocks anymore. Walk Egypt by Vinnie Williams is well-written soap opera, and Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird is sugar-water served with humor. . . . To Kill A Mockingbird is a more successful piece of work. It is frankly and completely impossible, being told in the first person by a six-year-old girl with the prose style of a well-educated adult. Miss Lee has, to be sure, made an attempt to confine the information in the text to what Scout would actually know, but it is no more than a casual gesture toward plausibility. The book's setting is a small town in Alabama, and the action behind Scout's tale is her father's determination, as a lawyer, liberal, and honest man, to defend a Negro accused of raping a white girl. What happens is, naturally, never seen directly by the narrator. The surface of the story is an Alcottish filigree of games, mischief, squabbles with an older brother, troubles at school, and the like. None of it is painful, for Scout and Jem are happy children, brought up with angelic cleverness by their father and his old Negro housekeeper. Nothing fazes them much or long. Even the new first-grade teacher, a devotee of the "Dewey decimal system" who is outraged to discover that Scout can already read and write, proves endurable in the long run. A variety of adults, mostly eccentric in Scout's judgment, and a continual bubble of incident make

Harper Lee's novel is a racist morality tale
By FRED LEEBRON SPECIAL TO THE P-I As your typical left-leaning liberal in need of a vacation from the redneck celebration of life in these United States, I ought to be glad that "To Kill a Mockingbird" endures like Styrofoam in this country. I'm happy for Harper Lee that her one novel was a rock-solid, best-selling, completely accessible to one and all morality tale. The problem, as I see it, with all this practiced obsession with "Mockingbird" is that, on second and third glance, it clearly does not treat its black "folk" as equally complex and subtle as the full spectrum of white "folk" in Maycomb; it does not step back and allow these downtrodden blacks free rein in the same vein it allows its whites. It does not even allow them the same capacity for elastic speech as it allows its 8-year-old protagonist, Scout. In Mockingbird, the black folk are as simple-spoken as toast, and they're ever so lucky to have Atticus Finch on their side. William Arnold: "Mockingbird" is a timeless, classic beauty

  • When To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, it brought its young first-time author, Harper Lee , a startling amount of attention and notoriety. The novel replays three key years in the life of Scout Finch, the young daughter of an Alabama town's principled lawyer. The work was an instant sensation, becoming a best-seller and winning the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Scout's narrative relates how she and her elder brother Jem learn about fighting prejudice and upholding human dignity through the example of their father. Atticus Finch has taken on the legal defense of a black man who has been falsely charged with raping a white woman. Lee's story of the events surrounding the trial has been admired for its portrayal of Southern life during the 1930s, not only for its piercing examination of the causes and effects of racism, but because it created a model of tolerance and courage in the character of Atticus Finch. Some early reviewers found Scout's narration unconvincing, its style and language too sophisticated for a young girl. Since then, however, critics have hailed Lee's rendering of a child's perspective—as told by an experienced adult—as one of the most technically proficient in modern fiction. A regional novel dealing with universal themes of tolerance, courage, compassion, and justice

Harper's Weekly July 1864 Robert E. Lee was one of the most accomplished military figures of the 1800's. It was no small blow to the Northern cause to have the General take command of the Confederate States Army. There were certainly bruised sentiments in the North. In 1864 Harper's Weekly ran a cover story on Robert E. Lee, that included a dramatic illustration of him. The image at your right is a picture of the original Harper's Weekly story on Lee. It is a great portrait of him. The story definitely reveals the paper's Northern bias, and their resentment of Lee's choice in the war. To give you a feel for what the North felt about Lee, I include below the ENTIRE story that appeared in Harper's Weekly in that 1864 edition.

Who is Harper Lee?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Harper Lee is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird . Born on 28 April 1926, Harper Lee almost became a lawyer. She attended the University of Alabama Law School, but left with only semester remaining to receive her degree. After attending Oxford University for a year, Lee went to New York City to pursue a writing career in 1950. Within ten years, she had finished her first and only novel, To Kill a Mockingbird . In 1961, a year after it was first published, the novel went on to win a Pulitzer Prize in fiction. It remains a great favorite. In 1999, the Library Journal voted To Kill a Mockingbird “the best novel of the century.” Set in Alabama, and very biographical, the story of To Kill a Mockingbird is narrated from the perspective of a young girl named Scout. Much of the story revolves around the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell, which interrupts Scout’s quiet world of child play. Ultimately, the novel is about a young girl learning about the world around her, especially through conversations with her father Atticus, symbolic of honor, integrity, and courage. Atticus is the accused man’s lawyer, and while he is not able to save the defendant, his pursuit of the case teaches Scout valuable life lessons, including the importance of holding on to one’s values in the face of opposition. In addition to the novel's literary success, its film adaptation was warmly received. Gregory Peck not only won an Oscar for his performance as Atticus, but he also became a life long friend of Harper Lee. Harper Lee was also friends with author
