Biography of Harper Lee
  • Born in Monroeville, Alabama, on April 28, 1926, Nelle Harper Lee is the youngest of three children of Amassa Coleman Lee and Francis Lee.
  • Miss Lee received her early education in the Monroeville public schools. Following this, she entered the University of Alabama to study law, but left in 1950 without having completed the requirements for her law degree. She moved to New York and worked as an airline reservation clerk.
  • Her law studies proved to be good training for a writing career: they promote logical thinking, and legal cases are an excellent source of story ideas. After she came to New York, she approached a literary agent with a manuscript of two essays and three short stories. Miss Lee followed his suggestion that she expand one of the stories into a novel. This eventually became To Kill A Mockingbird.
  • Besides her prize-winning novel, Miss Lee has had several essays published. For example, "Christmas to Me" appeared in the December, 1961, issue of McCalls, and "Love - In other Words" appeared in the April 15, 1961, edition of Vogue. These essays display the same easy, sympathetic style of her novel.
  • To Kill A Mockingbird was on the bestseller lists for a period of over eighty weeks. Also the book was chosen as a Literary Guild selection; a Book-of-the-Month book; and a Reader's Digest Condensed Book. It was also published in paperback by Popular Library. In April, 1961, Miss Lee was awarded the Alabama Library Association Award. In May, 1961, she was the first woman since 1942 to win the The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Harper Lee wrote only one, but what a book it was
Her decision to shun the limelight creates a challenge for would-be biographers.
    By Steve Weinberg
In an era of celebrity, when novelists scrap for any smidgen of publicity, Harper Lee is an enigma. On the scale of reclusiveness, she ranks with J.D. Salinger and Thomas Pynchon. Furthermore, Lee is at the center of a mystery inapplicable to Salinger and Pynchon: Why, after achieving fame with her first novel, did she fail to ever publish another book? It's a question Charles Shields never quite answers in his new biography Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee When "To Kill a Mockingbird" became one of the best-known novels of all time 45 years ago, Lee became an unlikely celebrity. In her mid-30s, from rural Monroeville, Ala., Lee had moved to New York City a decade earlier despite the disapproval of her lawyer father and his law partner, Harper's eldest sister, Alice. Harper Lee knew, just knew, she could write a publishable novel. Supported partly by family money and partly by wages earned outside the publishing world, Lee completed her manuscript: a novel about a racially charged rape case, about the companionship of children, about suspicion and trust. Assisted by a talented literary agent and a talented editor, Lee revised the manuscript into something memorable. The transformation of the novel into a movie starring Gregory Peck spread Lee's renown and increased the pressure on her to publish a second novel. That never happened.

    Their Eyes Were Watching God
Zora Neale Hurston. (NY: HarperCollins, [2000 reprint]). 231 pages.
My first exposure to Zora Neale Hurston's writing was her book Dust Tracks On A Road which I read as part of a PhD course on self-referential anthropology. I immediately fell in love with the unique and vivid way that Hurston uses language.
So along the way I acquired two more of Hurston's books, Mules and Men and Their Eyes Were Watching God , neither of which I ever got around to reading. Maggie's Southern Reading Challeng e was just the prompting I needed to move Their Eyes Were Watching God to the top of my "books-to-be-read" stack.
I loved the book and highly recommend it to you. If you already own it, move it to the top of your "books-to-be-read" stack. If you don't own it I recommend that you check it out of your local public library or spend the $10 to purchase it.
    Tolle lege!
I share below some quotes from the book:
Ships at a distance have every man's wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men.

Harper Lee Writes Rare Item for O Magazine
The Associated Press Monday, June 26, 2006; 10:58 PM The 80-year-old Pulitzer Prize winner quit giving interviews about 40 years ago and, other than a 1983 review of an Alabama history book, has published nothing of significance in some four decades. That makes her article for O, The Oprah Magazine, something of a literary coup for the television talk show celebrity.

    N ELLE H ARPER L EE
The following biographical sketch was compiled at the time of induction into the Academy in 2001.
Some forty years ago, Harper Lee wrote a book hailed by critics as the “best,” “most influential,” “most important,” book of 20th century American fiction. To Kill a Mockingbird , an American classic, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1961. Shortly thereafter, Universal Studios adapted the book into an Academy Award-winning film. Tens of millions of copies of the novel have been sold, dozens of editions have been published in English, and it has been translated into over thirty languages.
Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama. She was the youngest of Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Finch Lee’s four children.
Ms. Lee attended Huntingdon College in 1944-45, studied law at The University of Alabama from 1945-49, and studied for one year at Oxford University. Six months before earning her law degree, she decided to move to New York City – a move that would prove to be a major turning point in her life.
In the 1950s, she worked as a reservations clerk for Eastern Airlines in New York City, and concentrated in her spare time on her writing – devoting four hours a day to her craft. Her childhood experiences and a background in law – combined with an imaginative and creative spirit – all came together to form a rich source of storytelling material. After reviewing some of her short stories, a literary agent suggested that she consider going a step further by weaving the stories into a novel.

Lee completed the first draft of To Kill a Mockingbird in 1957, and it was published after nearly three years of rewriting and editing. Set in a small Alabama town during the 1930s, the story is narrated by a six-year-old girl named Jean Louise Finch, known to everyone as Scout. The chief element of the plot is a court case in which her father, attorney Atticus Finch, defends a black man wrongly charged with raping a white woman. The novel won the 1961
