Harper Lee’s cousin, Richard Williams, has asked the reclusive author when she’s going to come out with another book. “And she said, ‘Richard, when you’re at the top, there’s only one way to go’” ( Pressley For Harper Lee, “the top” is her novel To Kill a Mockingbird , which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961 and was made into an Academy Award–winning film, starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, in 1962. Except for a couple of short magazine pieces, this single novel constitutes her entire literary output. Nelle Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama, in 1926. After a year (1944-1945) at Huntington College in Montgomery, she went to the University of Alabama to study law. She remained at Alabama, including a year as an exchange student at Oxford University, from 1945 to 1949. She left the university six months before completing her law degree to go to New York City to become a writer. In New York she began to write while working as an airline reservation clerk. At the urging of a literary agent, she concentrated on expanding one of her short stories into a novel. In 1957 she took her manuscript to the publishing company Lippincott, where editors saw promise in her work and encouraged her to continue to revise it. The manuscript eventually became

    HARPER LEE, A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
    "Nelle"
Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, the youngest of four children of Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham Finch Lee. She grew up in Monroeville, a small town in southwest Alabama. Her father was a lawyer who also served in the state legislature from 1926-1938. As a child, Lee was a tomboy and a precocious reader. After she attended public school in Monroeville she attended Huntingdon College, a private school for women in Montgomery for a year and then transferred to the University of Alabama. After graduation, Lee studied at Oxford University. She returned to the University of Alabama to study law but withdrew six months before graduation.
She moved to New York in 1949 and worked as a reservations clerk for Eastern Air Lines and British Overseas Airways. While in New York, she wrote several essays and short stories but none were published. Her agent encouraged her to develop one short story into a novel. In order to complete it, Lee quit working and was supported by friends who believed in her work. In 1957, she submitted the manuscript to J. B. Lippincott Company. Although editors found the work too episodic, they saw promise in the book and encouraged Lee to rewrite it. In 1960, with the help of Lippincott editor Tay Hohoff, To Kill a Mockingbird

    November 12, 1995
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us David Guterson says he owes the wonderful success of his first novel to a reclusive Southern woman who only wrote one book. That woman is Harper Lee and the book she wrote was, as everyone knows, "To Kill A Mockingbird." "I owe a lot to 'To Kill A Mockingbird,' Guterson said at a reading in Berkeley earlier this month. "I followed very much the same structure and addressed the same concerns. I'm glad that book was part of my life." When Guterson's book, "Snow Falling on Cedars," won the Pen/Faulkner Award earlier this year, he wrote to Harper Lee asking her to come to the award ceremony in Washington, D.C. Guterson didn't say whether Lee answered his letter, but she definitely didn't come to the award ceremony. "She's really reclusive," said Guterson. But her impact on American literature in general and on Guterson in particular has been enormous. Other influences include the place he grew up, the Pacific Northwest, and his family. "My father is a practicing criminal law attorney in the Seattle area," said Guterson. "I often heard about his cases and I often sat in on his trials. In the late 1960s when I was growing up I wanted to be a crusader like him but I didn't want to wear a suit and commute. When I went to college I took a creative writing class and decided in a week to be a writer. Writing became an obsessive compulsive habit but I had almost no money so I thought about being an urban firefighter and having lots of free time in which to write or becoming an English teacher and thinking about books and writers on a daily basis. That swayed me."

        • UK By Andrew Buncombe in Washington Wednesday, 28 June 2006 Since completing her 1960 Pulitzer-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee has barely published a word. Two major writing projects - one a novel, the other a non-fiction work about an Alabama serial killer - were apparently started but never completed to her satisfaction. The life she has lived has been a quiet existence largely withdrawn from the public view, granting just a handful of interviews and making only the fewest of appearances. But now, at the age of 80, Lee has been tempted to pick up her pen by another woman from the Deep South who is no less a cultural icon than she. For the July edition of Oprah Winfrey's magazine O, Lee has written a celebration of books and reading, drawn from her own experience as a child in Alabama.

Harper Lee Speaks at Ala. Ceremony
But the author of "To Kill a Mockingbird" broke her silence briefly Monday at a ceremony inducting four new members, including former home-run king Hank Aaron, into the Alabama Academy of Honor. Lee, who lives in Monroeville, is a member of the academy, which honors living Alabamians, and was in the audience for Monday's ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, Academy of Honor chairman Tom Carruthers joked with Lee, saying he knew she had something she wanted to say to the crowd. "Well it's better to be silent than to be a fool," Lee said.

Monroeville, Alabama The best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird," with its memorable characters - Atticus Finch, Scout, Jem, Dill and Boo Radley - are familiar to many in our culture. The book's author, Harper Lee, is a native of the beautiful Southern town of Monroeville, Alabama.
The beautiful old Courthouse on the town square, which now houses the Monroe County Heritage Museums, served as a model for the famed courtroom scene from the book. When movie rights were acquired, the director, film crew and Gregory Peck (who played Atticus in the movie) made trips to this quaint little town in hopes of filming here. However, Monroeville had changed from the 1930s and court was still being held in the courthouse. Instead, they photographed and shot footage of the courthouse and the town in order to recreate the setting in Hollywood. If you have felt the power of Harper Lee's masterpiece, you will enjoy visiting Monroeville to get the feel of the story, just as Gregory Peck once did. You can enjoy a walking tour of the town, following a guide map that describes how the town was in the 1930s when Harper Lee and Truman Capote were growing up here.
