Two Soldier Poets
Killed During The Great War Of 1914-1918
Francis Ledwidge
Cpl., Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Killed in action on July 31, 1917 at Ypres, Flanders.
He shall not hear the bittern cry In the wild sky, where he is lain, Nor voices of the sweeter birds Above the wailing of the rain. Nor shall he know when loud March blows Through slanting snows her fanfare shrill, Blowing to flame the golden cup Of many an upset daffodil. But when the Dark Cow leaves the moor And pastures poor with greedy weeds, Perhaps he'll hear her low at morn Lifting her horn in pleasant meads.
Joyce Kilmer Sergeant, A.E.F, The Fighting 69th. Killed in action on July 30, 1918, at Seringes, France.
I think that I shall never see A poem as lovely as a tree A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed Against the earth's sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in summer wear A nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree.
