Francis Ledwidge was of humble background. His parents had nine children and they lived in a small cottage at Janeville near Slane, Co. Meath.
His father died young and Mrs. Ledwidge had to go to work in the fields to provide for her family. At one time the family were on the point of being evicted. The sheriff's men were only prevented in carrying out the order when the doctor attending the eldest son Patrick, who was suffering from tuberculosis, would not allow him to he shifted.
In the event Patrick died. The family were so poor that the Navan Board of Guardians had to pay for the coffin.
His death was to have a profound effect on his younger brother Francis. When Francis grew up he became involved with the Meath Labour Union and in 1913, was appointed secretary. He used his position to champion the cause of the peasant workers. Up to that point, Ledwidge had worked as a farm labourer, as a road worker and even in the copper mine at Beaupare. It was at Beaupare in 1910, three years before the general strike and lock out, that Ledwidge tried to organise a strike for better conditions. Unfortunately, not one of the 100 strong workforce would stand by him and he was sacked for being a trouble maker.
All things Irish appealed to Ledwidge; legends, folklore, music, sport, and he tried to set up a local branch of the Gaelic League. Many of his friends were prominent members of Sinn Fein; including Thomas Mac Donagh and Seamas O'Kelly. In 1914, he became leader of the Slane branch of the Volunteers. In June of that year he went to Manchester to rally support for the movement.

The Passion of the Beast
Boston: The Stratford Co., 1928. 30611; PQ3; GL; TDB. An unusual novel, about the strange hold a gorilla exerts on an aristocratic French family. In Paris, William St. Clair meets Armand Dumesnil, who presently asks the American to accompany him to his family estate. There St. Clair meets Armand's beautiful sister, Yvonne, and learns that there is some mystery surrounding the family. He comes to learn that their father, Hippolyte Dumesnil, while on safari, had seen a female gorilla and her children killed by his bearers. He prevented them from killing her mate, whom he captured and named Melek. Melek soon thereafter saved Dumesnil's life, and was brought to live on the family estate. Dumesnil had come to believe that the lives of his own children, Armand and Yvonne, were owed to the ape, who proved to be extremely jealous of any attentions to Yvonne.

    The Wife of Llew
And Gwydion said to Math, when it was Spring:
"Come now and let us make a wife for Llew."
And so they broke broad boughs yet moist with dew,
And in a shadow made a magic ring:
They took the violet and the meadow-sweet
To form her pretty face, and for her feet
They built a mound of daisies on a wing,
And for her voice they made a linnet sing
In the wide poppy blowing for her mouth.
And over all they chanted twenty hours.
And Llew came singing from the azure south
And bore away his wife of birds and flowers.
    A Rainy Day in April
When the clouds shake their hyssops, and the rain
Like holy water falls upon the plain,
'Tis sweet to gaze upon the springing grain
    And see your harvest born.
And sweet the little breeze of melody
The blackbord puffs upon teh budding tree,
While the wild poppy lights upon the lea
    And blazes 'mid the corn.
The skylark soars the freshening shower to hail,
And the meek daisy holds aloft her pail.
And Spring all radiant by the wayside pale
Sets up her rock and reel.

Nor shall he know when loud March blows Thro' slanting snows her fanfare shrill, Blowing to flame the golden cup Of many an upset daffodil. But when the dark cow leaves the moor, And pastures poor with greedy weeds, Perhaps he'll hear her low at morn Lifting her horn in pleasant meads. Francis Ledwidge As there are no Francis Ledwidge poems on your page, I thought that I would send this one on to you. Ledwidge was an Irish nationalist, from a quite poor background who, notwithstanding his nationalist feelings, joined the British army in the First World War. He felt bitterly let down when, in the middle of that war, in the aftermath of the Easter Rebellion in Dublin in 1916, the British authorities executed the leaders of this rebellion, one of whom was his friend, the poet Thomas MacDonagh. Notwithstanding his disillusion, he returned to the Front and was killed himself at the age of 29 in the Battle of Ypres in Belgium. The Easter Rising gave rise to an extraordinary amount of poetry. One of the most moving has been run previously, Padraic Pearse’s "The Mother" [Poem #1188], written by one of MacDonagh’s fellow rebels and poet on the eve of his own execution. Yeats’ poem, "Easter 1916" [

Francis Ledwidge
Francis Ledwidge (19 August 1887 – 31 July 1917)
Early Life/School Years
Born on 19th August 1887, Francis was the eighth of nine children born to Patrick and Anne Ledwidge. He was the first child born in the family's new home, a Labourer's Cottage (which is now home to the Ledwidge Cottage Museum ) just outside the village of Slane, situated in the heart of the Boyne Valley, some thirty miles North of Dublin. Christened Francis Edward but known as Frank to his family and friends the fledgling poet would know hardship at an early age. His father died when he was just four years old and only three months after the birth of his youngest brother Joseph. The burden fell on his mother Anne to provide for the family by undertaking backbreaking "outdoor relief" work in the fields for a meagre eight shillings a week.
Further tragedy was to befall the Ledwidge family when the eldest son Patrick returned from his book keeping job in Dublin with tuberculosis and a four year death sentence. Francis later said of that time:

Francis Ledwidge Cottage Slane's own Francis Ledwidge was born in Slane in 1887 and raised in a small cottage that survives today as Ireland's only "poet's cottage" museum. The cottage is situated about half a mile east of the Village on the left hand side of the Drogheda Road (N51). The cottage was purchased through the tremendous efforts of local volunteers, including Pearl Baxter, as well as through donations obtained through cousins in the States. The cottage has four small rooms including some original and period furnishings in the bedroom and kitchen. The cottage evokes the simple life of the rural Irish while the displays of original manuscripts and the poetry itself proclaim the transcendence of one man's thought in verse. It is proof that humble surroundings, close family and day laborer's work can be the forge of a great soul. Ellie Vaughey Francis Ledgwidge wrote from a young age and at one point his work was recognized as brilliant by Lord Dunsany who became his patron. Lord Dunsany introduced Ledwidge to the Dublin Literary circle and he had his first volume of Fifty poems, entitled Songs of the Field , published in 1915. His poems celebrated nature, quiet mornings before dawn and his love for Ellie Vaughey.
