edit Early life
Ledwidge was born at Janeville Slane in Ireland, the eight of nine children, a large and poverty-stricken family. His parents, Patrick Ledwidge (the name of German origin, came to Meath with the Anglo-Normans) and wife Anne Lynch (1853-1926), believed in giving their children the best education they could afford, but when Francis was only five his father Patrick died prematurely, which forced his wife and the children out to work at an early age. Francis left the local national school aged thirteen, and while he continued to self-educate himself, he worked at what work he could find, as farm hand, road mender and supervisor of roads, as copper miner (sacked for organising a strike having been a trade union activist since 1906) and shop assistant. Appointed secretary of the Slane branch of the Meath Labour Union (1913-14) he had aspirations of permanent white-collar work

    Notes on Life and Works
Born on August 19, 1891, in Slane, Ireland, Francis Ledwidge left school when twelve years old to work on a farm, on the roads, and in the mines. Before he entered World War I in October 1914 in the 5th battalion of the Royal Inniskillings, Ledwidge published verse in the Drogheda Independent . He acted as secretary of a farm workers' union in Meath and then insurance commissioner for Navan, Meath's county town. As early as 1912, Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, Lord Dunsany, had assisted him to get his poetry recognized. Ledwidge brought out his first volume of poems

"Nationalist and poet, Francis Ledwidge was born in Slane the son of a poor labourer. Leaving school at the age of 14 he worked in various manual labour positions while developing a love for and honing his own poetical talents. It was in 1911 that Ledwidge first received notable recognition for his poetry. Francis Ledwidge was born in Slane on 19th August, 1887. He left school at fourteen and took up various labouring jobs, but poetry was his first love. At twenty-four, he finally received the acclaim his poetry so richly deserved. He sent his notebook of poems to Lord Dunsany who became his mentor. He had his first volume of fifty poems entitled "Songs of the Field" published in 1915. He fell in love with a local girl Ellie Vaughey but she rejected him for another. His rejection in love, his patriotic nature and his innocence, probably all combined with the poet's spontaneous nature, convinced him to enlist in the Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers. Only he can have known for sure. What is certain however, is that the poet became a soldier and experienced the horrors of World War 1. He wrote two hundred odd poems and only nine mentioned the war in any degree. Of those most describe some isolated moment of beauty that had escaped the carnage of war. He fought in France and was killed at the battle of Ypres on 31st July, 1917. Although buried in Paschendale, his spirit is in Slane. Francis the student.

Having sent a collection of his poems to well-known author Lord Dunsany he received a favourable response, Dunsany assuming the role of mentor to Ledwidge, introducing him to the Dublin literary scene. Although possessing moderate Irish nationalist views Ledwidge nevertheless signed up with the British Army - the Irish Volunteers in October 1914 - to serve in France and Flanders during World War One, on the basis that it was unreasonable to expect others to fight for the freedoms that he would later enjoy. Despite his initial reluctance to enlist he nevertheless argued that his service with the British during World War One was in no way incompatible with his nationalist views: rather, he believed he was furthering the cause of Irish independence from Britain. One year after war began, in 1915, and while serving abroad on active duty Ledwidge saw an initial volume of fifty of his poems published as
