    À première vue, Léautaud n'aura laissé que ces quelques images amusantes et sympathiques de son amour envers les animaux et de son aspect physique non conventionnel. Il est toujours surprenant de constater comment on peut réduire la vie d'un homme à quelques photographies parues un jour dans " Paris-Match ". Léautaud est resté un être marginalisé dont l'image qu'il donnait est plus importante que la richesse de sa personnalité et de son écriture.
    Ainsi, publié au début du siècle précédent, " Le petit ami " le plus roman de ses écrits aura un certain retentissement dans le milieu littéraire de l'époque, le livre explique sans fards les retrouvailles de Léautaud avec une mère qu'il n'a jamais connu et nous plonge dans des relations difficiles aux parfums d'inceste non consommés. Pourtant, malgré un succès certain auprès de ses pairs et l'insistance des éditeurs, Léautaud n'acceptera jamais une nouvelle publication du " Petit ami ".
    Insatisfait, il allègue vouloir en reprendre l'écriture, y ajouter un chapitre ou deux et retrancher tout ce qui n'est pas essentiel à la compréhension du texte. L'écriture se doit être dépouillée, limpide et se limiter uniquement à l'idée que l'on désire exprimer. Malgré ses promesses et quelques tentatives infructueuses, il ne refera jamais " Le petit ami " même si plusieurs lui prédisent le goncourt pour un ouvrage un peu plus volumineux. Il aurait certes apprécié l'argent accompagnant le titre pour le sortir de la pauvreté mais, intransigeant, Léautaud crie que celui qui accepte un prix littéraire, commet un acte de prostitution inqualifiable et troque son indépendance et sa liberté.
