10 years since Timothy Leary's death
00:04 UTC Joi's Diary Photo 1995 at Timothy Leary's home Timothy Leary passed away 10 years ago today. I was with him the evening before he died and I still remember his humor even in his final hour. I met Timothy Leary in Tokyo in the summer of 1990. Tim was excited about virtual reality and had told his friend David Kubiak in Kyoto to help him track down "young Japanese kids who know about virtual reality". I wasn't a VR expert, but I was into computer graphics, games and the rave/club scene. I had also just opened a nightclub in Tokyo. David, who lived in Kyoto, directed Tim to me and several others in Tokyo and we hooked up with him at a bar. I hijacked the situation. After dinner I grabbed Tim and took him on a whirlwind tour of the Tokyo club scene. His visit happened to coincide with the time in my life when I was more tuned in to the Tokyo club scene than any other time in my life being the operator of one of the weirder nightclubs in Tokyo. I tried to explain how the Japanese youth were interpreting the rave and cyberpunk cultures. Tim got excited and we continued our dialog. He called these new funky Japanese kids "The New Breed". He changed the "tune in, turn on, drop out" to "tune in, turn on, take over." We talked a lot about neoteny, the retention of child-like attributes in adulthood, which he felt was exhibited in the culture of the Japanese youth at the time. When I met Tim, I had been exposed to a lot of his work through his early writings and through the writings of people like

Upon entering the California State Prison at Chino, he was administered an intelligence test to determine where he should be placed within the state's prison strata. The test happened to be based on psychological standards that Leary himself had largely authored during his groundbreaking work in the 1950s. He knew how to make it work for him. He checked off all the answers that, in his own words, would make him seem "normal, nonimpulsive, docile, conforming." As a result he was transferred to California Men's Colony - West at San Luis Obispo - a minimum-security prison.

Less than ten years passed from his death. Not a long time for the person, who managed not to be the product of the epoch, but to start his own one.

To some a symbol of all that a creative mind set free could achieve to others a symbol of all that was wrong in a generation. He would influence even in passing what few could hope for in their entire lives. This site is neither a endorsement or a criticism of the man. Rather it acknowledges his passion for self discovery that has rubbed off on so many. Dr. Timothy Leary's only unfulfilled dream was his wish to pass away while on the Internet. Now here's a thought perhaps someone will do it virtually.

Tinker, Tailor, Stoner, Spy: Was Timothy Leary a CIA Agent? by Mark Riebling Timothy Leary, the CIA, and LSD: A Narrative Chronology. Touches on Angleton, JFK, and the mysterious unsolved murder of Mary Meyer. EXT. THE WHITE HOUSE SUNSET (JULY 1962) Summer-bachelor Jack Kennedy stands on the Harry Truman balcony overlooking the rose-garden fountain, a soothing sight before him: prisms of lighted water shooting into darkness, the white spike of the Washington Monument, auto headlights flickering along Executive Avenue. He begins to feel a deep-seated goodness within, centered between his chest and throat. From the bedroom behind him, through white chiffon curtains in open french doors, float the chords of a Sinatra song "All I Need is the Girl." With strange clarity, JFK can suddenly make out every note... Behind the curtains moves the shadow of a tall woman who is not his wife. She is deeply connected to CIA, and has just dispensed to the President of the United States a dose of LSD. In the next few hours she will be "brainwashing" him, and she will be doing so on the directions of a Harvard psychologist, Dr. Timothy Leary, whose colleagues are all taking CIA money, and who has himself designed a personality test used by CIA.... This, or something very much like this, actually happened. To understand how and why it happened requires cruising back a few years, digging through government documents, reading between the lines of Leary's autobiography

"The actuality is continually outdoing our talents, and the culture tosses up figures daily that are the envy of any novelist." He could have been writing about Timothy Leary, who then was gaining notoriety for experimenting with psychedelic drugs at Harvard and now is the subject of an eminently readable but ultimately disappointing biography by music writer Robert Greenfield. Leary didn't just champion the use of mind-blowing substances and technologies in the years before his ashes were shot into space after his 1996 death from prostate cancer. His very life was as richly bizarre in ways both good and bad as any acid trip could possibly be.

But Timothy Leary didn't die of split chromosomes, marijuana lungs, or incurable drug-induced insanity. He died of an old man's disease, just plain old prostate cancer. He also drank too much alcohol and smoked too many cigarettes. He went to West Point, did you know that? - and built a patio on his house in Berkeley in the 50s with his own hands, for the kids to play on. Eerily standard American stuff.
From his book Flashbacks I learned about the amazing energy and dedication with which he was persecuted by nearly every level of law enforcement, finally landing in solitary in Folsom prison for possession of a roach. "As I walked toward the cell," he told me, "I knew I had a choice - I could either have a really bad time or I could learn something. I started learning."

Timothy Leary, Pied Piper Of Psychedelic 60's, Dies at 75
By LAURA MANSNERUS Timothy Leary, who effectively introduced many Americans to the psychedelic 1960's with the relentlessly quoted phrase, "turn on, tune in, drop out," died yesterday at his house in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 75. However indelible his connection with another era, Mr. Leary was very much a man of the moment, and made his death a final act of performance art by having video cameras record it for possible broadcast on the Internet. He had planned a celebration, and Web sites had collected Leary memorabilia texts of his books and lectures, tributes from friends, a listing of his daily drug intake, legal and illegal from the time he was told last year that he had prostate cancer. Carol Rosin, a friend who was at Mr. Leary's bedside, said his last words were: "Why not? Why not? Why not?" Mr. Leary's stepson, Zachary Chase, said that until the end, "he was maintaining his rascal quality." And R. Couri Hay, another friend who joined a small gathering around Mr. Leary on his last night, said: "Tim told us, 'Don't let it be sad. Buy wine. Put soup on the stove.' Tim loved life." In his long and extravagant public career, Mr. Leary was an accomplished clinical psychologist at Harvard University, a dabbler in Eastern mysticism, a fugitive and convict, a stand-up comedian and actor, a writer and a software designer and an exponent of cybernetics.

Dr. Timothy Leary's LSD Research The following is an excerpt from Ralph Metzner's excellent book, The Psychedelic Experience . It is based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead and co-authored by the late Timothy Leary A psychedelic experience is a journey to new realms of consciousness. The scope and content of the experience is limitless, but its characteristic features are the transcendence of verbal concepts, of space-time dimensions, and of the ego or identity. Such experiences of enlarged consciousness can occur in a variety of ways: sensory deprivation, yoga exercises, disciplined meditation, religious or aesthetic ecstasies, or spontaneously. Most recently they have become available to anyone through the ingestion of psychedelic drugs such as LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, DMT , etc. Of course, the drug does not produce the transcendent experience. It merely acts as a chemical key - it opens the mind, frees the nervous system of its ordinary patterns and structures. The nature of the experience depends almost entirely on set and setting. Set denotes the preparation of the individual, including his personality structure and his mood at the time. Setting is physical - the weather, the room's atmosphere; social - feelings of persons present towards one another; and cultural - prevailing views as to what is real. It is for this reason that manuals or guide-books are necessary. Their purpose is to enable a person to understand the new realities of the expanded consciousness, to serve as road maps for new interior territories which modern science has made accessible.

Black out: sensitive passages are made illegible before release
Timothy Leary, the counter-culture guru of the Sixties, who urged his generation to "tune in, turn on, drop out" informed on friends and helpers in order to get out of jail early. That is the picture that emerges from Federal Bureau of Investigation documents now published on the Internet. Timothy Leary advocated drugs all his life When Timothy Leary died from prostate cancer in 1996 at the age of 76, obituary writers focused on his experimentation with drugs, his counter-culture history, and how Mr Leary chronicled his slow death via the Internet. The former Harvard professor of psychology had preached anti-establishment slogans all his adult life. But after he was jailed on narcotics charges in 1974, Mr Leary began cooperating with FBI agents investigating his 1971 escape from a California prison. He had been helped by members of the radical Weather Underground group to escape from the jail and, after hiding in a series of safe houses, he was smuggled out of the country with the help of a false passport and other fake documents provided by the Weathermen.
