LEAR, Edward
Born: May 12, 1812, in London, England Died: January 29, 1888, in San Remo, Italy Edward Lear was an English painter and humorist who is considered a master of the limerick and nonsense poetry. He was the son of a stockbroker, the youngest child of a poor family with twenty-one children. His older sister Anne tutored him at home. He had to start contributing to the family income at the age of fifteen. Lear was commissioned to make drawing of parrots at the Zoological Gardens. His early drawings of parrots lead him to a career with the London Zoological Society. The Illustrations of the Family of the Psittacidae was the first large- scale volume of colored drawings of parrots to appear in England. Published in 1832, the illustrations are considered the most precise and vivid of all ornithological drawings of the period. His work was noticed by the earl of Derby, who hired Lear to illustrate the animals of the earl's menagerie. For the earl's grandchildren, Lear wrote Book of Nonsense , a collection of poetry that was illustrated with humorous sketches. This book was published ten years later in 1846 and Lear is thus recognized as the inventor of the limerick.

LIMERICKS
Limericks have remained popular over the years. Limerick poems can often be of a funny or even a bawdy, or dirty, subject. The history of limerick poems is detailed below and due to the location of Limerick in Ireland the Irish Limericks are often found to be the most popular. Is the Limerick a form of poetry or are limericks just childish rhymes? The defence of the Limerick is also covered in this section. Poetry Site Index Funny Poetry Poetry for Children Love Poetry ... Add to Favourites Limericks A Form of Poetry? Limerick Poems? Limericks the genre?
The form of poetry referred to as Limerick poems have received incredibly bad press and dismissed as not having a rightful place amongst what is seen as 'cultivated poetry'. The reason for this is three-fold:
  • The content of many limericks is often of a bawdy and humorous nature. A Limerick as a poetry form is by nature simple and short - limericks only have five lines. And finally the somewhat dubious history of limericks have contributed to the critics attitudes.
Limericks - The History
Variants of the form of poetry referred to as Limerick poems can be traced back to the fourteenth century English history. Limericks were used in Nursery Rhymes and other poems for children. But as limericks were short, relatively easy to compose and bawdy or sexual in nature they were often repeated by beggars or the working classes in the British pubs and taverns of the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventh centuries. The poets who created these limericks were therefore often drunkards! Limericks were also referred to as dirty.

The Edward Lear Foundation is a newly-established Disability Arts think-tank.
We have been set up to create new thinking in Disability Arts. In particular, we want to create thinking that is not led by the policy-making of arts funding bodies. We feel that Disability artists should play a key part in this process.
We also intend to create projects that will embody this thinking. Where possible, we shall find new funding sources for these, so that we do not take money away from existing Disability Arts work.
Our first key project is to start the process of preserving and archiving the past achievements of disability arts. We are working closely with Holton Lee in Dorset and with the National Disability Arts Forum on this.
We are currently carrying out a piece of research to discover what disability arts organisations are already doing in this area. First responses indicate that the issue is widely felt to be important.

Edward Lear

Edward Lear was born in London, the twentieth child of a stockbroker. Although the family was initially wealthy, his father went bankrupt when he was three, and the family never regained its former wealth. When his father retired, Edward was cared for by his sister Anne. From the age of fourteen they shared rented rooms and she encouraged his natural talent for drawing and painting, and despite the fact that he had never received any formal artistic training, his work became well known. From the age of sixteen he was commissioned to produce illustrations of various kinds. Lears subjects included birds and landscapes. His chief work was small water-colours, thousands of which survive today. Edward Lear is mostly remembered not for his considerable talent as an artist but for his Nonsense Rhymes. He is credited with inventing the Limerick, which he wrote to amuse the children of his wealthy clients. As well as the Limericks he wrote other nonsense rhymes such as " The Owl and The Pussycat" and " The Jumblies" .

The Remarkable Nature of Edward Lear
Known the world over as the author of "The Owl and the Pussycat" and other "nonsense poems" for children, Edward Lear (1812-1888) was also an extraordinarily accomplished natural history painter, ranked by many contemporaries—and subsequent art historians—as an artist on a par with John James Audubon. In the decade of the 1830s, Lear was the unofficial artist in residence at the London Zoo, illustrating dozens of natural history publications for others as well as his own spectacular monograph on parrots, Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots Just as he was achieving an international reputation for his scientific illustration, Lear abruptly terminated this part of his career in order to devote himself full-time to landscape painting and travel. Fortunately, his scientific illustrations endure. The Ewell Sale Stewart Library of The Academy of Natural Sciences owns copies of virtually every one of the dozens of now rare books that Edward Lear illustrated. An extensive set of images from two of his publications is presented here.

The Death of Edward Lear
by Donald Barthelme
The death of Edward Lear took place on a Sunday morning in May 1888. Invitations were sent out well in advance. The invitations read: Mr. Edward LEAR
Nonsense Writer and Landscape Painter
Requests the Honor of Your Presence
On the Occasion of his DEMISE.
San Remo 2:20 a.m.
The 29th of May Please reply One can imagine the feelings of the recipients. Our dear friend! is preparing to depart! and such-like. Mr. Lear! who has given us so much pleasure! and such-like. On the other hand, his years were considered. Mr. Lear! who must be, now let me see… And there was a good deal of, I remember the first time I (dipped into) (was seized by)… But on the whole, Mr. Lear's acquaintances approached the occasion with a mixture of solemnity and practicalness, perhaps remembering the words of Lear's great friend, Tennyson: Old men must die,
Or the world would grow mouldy and: For men may come and men may go,
But I go on forever. People prepared to attend the death of Edward Lear as they might have for a day in the country. Picnic baskets were packed (for it would be wrong to expect too much of Mr. Lear's hospitality, under the circumstances); bottles of wine were wrapped in white napkins. Toys were chosen for the children. There were debates as to whether the dog ought to be taken or left behind. (Some of the dogs actually present at the death of Edward Lear could not restrain themselves; they frolicked about the dying man's chamber, tugged at the bedclothes, and made such nuisances of themselves that they had to be removed from the room.)

Born on May 12, 1812, in London, Edward Lear as a teenager found artistic work drawing zoological specimens for illustrated books. One of his patrons was the earl of Derby, for whose children he devised the Book of Nonsense , published in 1846, the year after he had given drawing lessons to Queen Victoria. After 1837 he left England, returning only occasionally until his death at San Remo in January 1888. Lear suffered from epilepsy and depression. His original nonsense book went through several dozen editions, and he published as well
