He was born in Highgate , a suburb of London , the 20th child of Ann and Jeremiah Lear. He was raised by his eldest sister, Ann, twenty-one years his senior. At the age of fifteen, he and his sister had to leave the family home and set up house together. He started work as a serious illustrator and his first publication, at the age of 19, was Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots in . His paintings were well received and he was favourably compared with Audubon . Throughout his life he continued to paint seriously. He had a lifelong ambition to illustrate Tennyson 's poems; near the end of his life a volume with a small number of illustrations was published, but his vision for the work was never realised. Edward Lear English painter and writer
Main
born May 12, 1812, Highgate, near London, England died January 29, 1888, San Remo, Italy English landscape painter who is more widely known as the writer of an original kind of nonsense verse and as the popularizer of the limerick. His true genius is apparent in his nonsense poems, which portray a world of fantastic creatures in nonsense words, often suggesting a deep underlying sense of melancholy. Their quality is matched, especially in the limericks, by that of his engaging pen-and-ink drawings. The youngest of 21 children, Lear was brought up by his eldest sister, Ann, and from age 15 earned his living by drawing. He subsequently worked for the British Museum, made drawings of birds for the ornithologist John Gould A Book of Nonsense (1846, enlarged 1861). In 1835 he decided to become a landscape painter. Lear suffered all his life from epilepsy and melancholia. After 1837 he lived mainly abroad. Though naturally timid, he was a constant and intrepid traveler, exploring Italy, Greece, Albania, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, and, later, India and Ceylon [now Sri Lanka]. An indefatigable worker, he produced innumerable pen and watercolour sketches of great topographical accuracy. He worked these up into the carefully finished watercolours and large oil paintings that were his financial mainstay. During his nomadic life he lived, among other places, at Rome, Corfu, and, finally, with his celebrated cat, Foss, at San Remo.

From LoveToKnow 1911
EDWARD LEAR (1812-1888), English artist and humorist, was born in London on the 12th of May 1812. His earliest drawings were ornithological. When he was twenty years old he published a brilliantly coloured selection of the rarer Psittacidae. Its power attracted the attention of the 13th earl of Derby , who employed Lear to draw his Knowsley menagerie . He became a permanent favourite with the Stanley family; and Edward, 15th earl, was the child for whose amusement the first Book of Nonsense was composed. From birds Lear turned to landscape, his earlier efforts in which recall the manner of J. D. Harding; but he quickly acquired a more individual style . About 1837 he set up a studio at Rome , where he lived for ten years, with summer tours in Italy and Sicily , and occasional visits to England . During this period he began to publish his Illustrated Journals of a Landscape Painter: charmingly written reminiscences of wandering, which ultimately embraced Calabria , the Abruzzi, Albania Corsica Greece Constantinople , the Ionian Islands , Lower Egypt , the wildest recesses of Albania, and the desert of Sinai . He returned to London, but the climate did not suit him. In 1854-1855 he wintered on the

Powered by groups.yahoo.com Why an Edward Lear page? Well, first of all because I like his nonsense very much, and then I wrote my thesis about him several years ago (don't worry, I'm not going to publish it!) so I am supposed to be widely read on the subject... Most important of all, however, is the fact that I haven't been able to find a great deal of Lear's nonsense poetry on the net and I think he deserves his small virtual space as much as his contemporary poetical colleague Lewis Carroll. After all, Lear may be considered the inventor of the term 'snail mail' That's it, if you share the Jumblies' spirit of adventure or your nose is as luminous as the Dong's, if you think there's nothing strange in living in the nest of an owl or your feelings are wrung with compuction

Edward Lear
English artist, traveller and writer. He wrote and illustrated many books most of which fall into one of two categories, travel or children's verse. Under the patronage of the thirteenth Earl of Derby he travelled widely and produced many illustrated works detailing his experiences. Sketches of Rome (1842), and Illustrated Excursions in Italy (1846) are his most well known travel books. A greater part of his important works for children were written after 1870, these include Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany and Alphabets (1870), More Nonsense Rhymes (1871), and Laughable Lyrics (1876).

Edward Lear, the last photograph,
taken in 1887 Victorian Trickster: A Jungian Consideration of Edward Lear's Nonsense Verse
The foremost Lear scholar, Vivien Noakes, has pointed out that "When Lear was first writing there was no such thing as an established literary genre of nonsense" ( Wanderer 223). Why, then, should not one but two men writing in the mid-1800s simultaneously yet apparently without knowledge of each other introduce into English letters what amounted to a new genre, one that has never lost its popularity? The Victorian collective psyche must have been ready, somehow, to respond to the irrational characters and patterns depicted in the Alice stories and in Lear's nonsense limericks, songs, and stories. In his book, Art and the Creative Unconscious, the eminent Jungian analyst, Erich Neumann, has noted that "the creative impulse springs from the collective" (98), and that "although creative men usually live unknown to one another, without influence on one another, a common force seems to drive all those men who ever compensate for a cultural canon at a given time or shape a new one" (99). Such is the case with Carroll and Lear. Alice has been analyzed from a Jungian point of view (Bloomingdale 378-390). More analysis needs to be done on Carroll. However, no Jungian interpretation has yet been applied to Lear, and I propose such an interpretation here.
