Canadian political scientist, historian, and humorist. His humour has survived his often rather conservative political writings. His butts include the urban plutocracy, especially in the parodies of Frenzied Fictions (1918), and popular fiction, as well as human folly generally. His other humorous works include Literary Lapses (1910) and the controversial because recognizable Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town Nonsense Novels Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich (1914), and Humour and Humanity (1937). He also published studies of Mark Twain (1932) and Charles Dickens (1933). His autobiography, The Boy I Life Behind Me , was published in 1947.

The Busy Life of an Author, Teacher and Public Speaker
Karen Jordan Aug 10, 2007
Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town was Leacock's best known work but his most financially rewarding effort was a text book which became a university standard for 20 years
Stephen Butler Leacock was an unlikely combination of humorist and political economist. Throughout his life he was able to successfully combine the roles of satirical and academic writer, university professor and public speaker. Born in Swanmore, Hampshire, England on Dec 30, 1869 Leacock was the third of 11 children. The Leacocks immigrated to Canada in 1876 and settled in the Sutton area, north of Toronto. His father, Peter Leacock, left the family for extended periods of time. In 1887 he left and never returned. Beginning in the mid 1890's the family began spending their summers in Orillia, Ontario where Leacock's mother had purchased a second home. Eventually Leacock would own his own home in Orillia at Old Brewery Bay. That house is now a museum and tourist attraction.

    Stephen Leacock Theatre
The Theatre was named for one of Georgina's most famous citizens, the legendary Stephen Leacock. His home-spun stories about small-town Ontario endeared him to readers throughout the world. The campaign to build the Georgina Cultural Centre was spear-headed by the late "Whipper" Billy Watson, who was also a life-long resident of the Town. This beautiful building, located at 130 Gwendolyn Drive in Keswick ( map ), houses both the Theatre and the Club 55 seniors centre. The Stephen Leacock Theatre is home to the Queensville Players and South Shore Little Theatre. The Town of Georgina Leisure Services Department, also produces shows and events at the Theatre. Always a good bargain and a great entertainment outing. What's on at the Leacock Theatre?

Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town , published in 1912. Sketches was a fondly satirical portrait of Orillia, Ont., where Leacock spent many summers. In this audio clip from 1943, Stephen Leacock reads another of his humorous tales, "My Old College," written for the McGill Graduates' Society on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the university. Next Printer-friendly page Send this page to a friend Add this clip to your personal bookmarks ... Cite this page Leacock taught political economy at McGill University for 33 years. He was a beloved professor, with an eccentrically untidy, patched-jacket appearance and a ready wit. Fellow professor John Culliton wrote of him, "Leacock was not a legend on campus. He was the campus." And Leacock loved McGill and loved teaching: he fought his compulsory retirement in 1936. Happily, nobody could keep him from his humorous writings, which he continued until his death on March 28, 1944. Previous Did You Know?
