Ursula K. Le Guin on Gedo Senki
posted on 13:25 EDT Le Guin not entirely satisfied with Ghibli adaptation On August 6, Studio Ghibli held a special preview screening of Gedo Senki for Ursula K. Le Guin , creator of the Earthsea series, on which Gedo Senki is based. The screening was held in a theater near LeGuin's home in England Oregon. Le Guin and her son, along with 70 members of her family and friends.
Goro Miyazaki
said a few words before the screening, then retired to a nearby cafe instead of watching it with them. He writes in his diary, "While the film played, I was beside myself with nervousness." Following the screening Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki received a generous applause from the audience members, but it was not until later in the evening that he went to ask Le Guin for her impressions of the movie.
Miyazaki writes,
She answered briefly, saying: “It is not my book. It is your film. It is a good film.”
I felt as if there was more that she wanted to say, but her warm smile conveyed more than what words could have.

(Full name Ursula Kroeber Le Guin) American novelist, short story and novella writer, poet, essayist, lecturer, author of children's books, editor, dramatist, and scriptwriter. The following entry presents criticism of Le Guin's short fiction from 1990 to 2000. For criticism of Le Guin's short fiction published prior to fall 1990, see SSC, Volume 12.
    INTRODUCTION
A highly respected award-winning author of fantasy and science fiction, Le Guin is best known for her stories in which alternative societies serve as the backdrop for discussion about philosophic and social issues such as morality, individual identity, political ideology, and racial interaction. Perhaps unexpectedly, Le Guin's works seem to be shaped more by the social sciences than the physical sciences, as evidenced in her writing by the prominent inclusion of historical context, varied political and economic systems, diverse cultures, and psychological characteristics.
    Biographical Information
Born in Berkeley, California, Le Guin grew up in a home where intellectual life was celebrated and famous scholars were regular visitors. Her father, Alfred Louis Kroeber, was an acclaimed anthropologist; her mother, Theodora, wrote

Beth reviews GIFTS : Annals of the Western Shore by Ursula K. Le Guin (Harcourt, 2004)
This young adult book “fell into my lap” after I finished reading Garden Spells , and it just seemed the perfect title to read next. Gifts is about a group of people who live in the Uplands and have special abilities—mind powers. These powers are passed from father to son or mother to daughter and each clan has their own power. Gry can communicate with animals, but, unlike her mother, refuses to use it to call the animals to the hunters. Orrec’s line has the power to “unmake” any living thing—from grass to animals to people. With Orrec’s mother being a lowlander, there is a fear his power will not work—however, it turns out to be something even worse! For the safety of those around him, Orrec chooses to wear a blindfold and hide his gift, but will it be enough?

Book Review: The Other Wind by Ursula K. Le Guin
    Reviewed by David Bratman
One of the most memorable images in Ursula K. Le Guin's classic A Wizard of Earthsea was of the dry lands, the otherworld where the dead go: the hillside where a simple wall of stones marks the border between the lands of living and of dead, which the living can see only in trance or dream, and must not cross. Le Guin explored the dry lands further in her third Earthsea book, The Farthest Shore . Now she returns and wrests the complete meaning and significance from it, in an expedition into the roots of the very nature of Earthsea, and of life and death in it.
The Other Wind follows up on major plot threads from Tehanu and Tales from Earthsea as well as from The Farthest Shore . It will read more easily if you know all three of these, but an adventurous new reader can pick up what needs to be known. I like all of Le Guin's work, but I enjoyed this book more than its two immediate predecessors, and I suspect readers less sympathetic to her writing will like it better too. It is less cryptic, and less didactic. There are no crude antagonists here, only people trying to understand each other. Even one character repeatedly shown up as foolish is sympathetic.
The story begins with Alder, a village sorcerer having disturbing dreams of the dry lands. He visits Ged, the retired Archmage, who gives him comfort and simple work to do (and a cat!). Without Ged, Alder goes to the king's city in Havnor, then to the wizards' isle of Roke. In these places he learns that his dreams are associated with other disturbing events. He meets royalty, councillors, mages, and dragons. He wonders why they keep him around. But they know that in the end Alder will be the one to realize what must be done.

Dick Home pages: The Greatest Literature of All Time Selected Authors Selected Greatest Works Editor Eric LE GUIN, Ursula K. (b. 1929) The growing respectability since the 1960s of what is loosely called science fiction can be attributed to Ursula Kroeber Le Guin, as much as to anyone else. Crossover acceptance of Le Guin's work—the recognition of it being good, even great, literature—brought many mainstream readers to what had formerly been considered a narrow genre appealing to young males, concerning space battles and bug-eyed monsters. Her themes are profoundly human, saying more about us here and now than about any beings in any imagined future. The reaction in the SF community to her wider acceptance has sometimes been to complain that she does not write genuine science fiction. Her stories often involve time and space travel to alien worlds, but she does not deal with the science, it is said. The SF trappings are there just to bring her characters into novel situations where her focus is on their relationships with each other and, most importantly, their relationships with their environment. Religion, philosophy, psychoanalysis and anthropology are woven throughout these relationships. Okay, so don't call her a science-fiction writer. Call her a writer of speculative fiction, which could also include her fantasy tales. Or come up with a new term to describe the Le Guin hybrid. But by any name, her writing touches a lot of people.

I made a note to myself a while ago: "Whenever they tell me children want this sort of book and children need this sort of writing, I am going to smile politely and shut my earlids. I am a writer, not a caterer. There are plenty of caterers. But what children most want and need is what we and they don't know they want and don't think they need, and only writers can offer it to them."
My fiction, especially for kids and young adults, is often reviewed as if it existed in order to deliver a useful little sermon ("Growing up is tough but you can make it," that sort of thing). Does it ever occur to such reviewers that the meaning of the story might lie in the language itself, in the movement of the story as read, in an inexpressible sense of discovery, rather than a tidy bit of advice?

Jan M. Griffin Ursula K. LeGuin is usually labeled as a science fiction writer. It is a categorization she doesn't exactly appreciate because she writes in many genres other than science fiction. Besides science fiction, LeGuin says of her literature, "some of it is fantasy, some of it is realistic, some of it is magical realism." Along with novels, LeGuin writes poetry and essays Contemporary Authors, p. 5). She disapproves of narrow genre-labeling because many authors write in various genres, and more importantly, she implies that science fiction books are seen as some sort of sub-genre, but "some of this stuff is some of the best writing that's being done in the United States" C.A. , p. 12) LeGuin should know. She is an author who has received critical acclaim for much of her writing. The awards have been for literary merit, not just science fiction awards given to books in that category.
