Many critics consider her fantasy adventures, which are popular with both children and adults, as her best writing. These works include her most popular works for children, the Earthsea trilogy. The three novels consist of A Wizard of Earthsea (1968), The Tombs of Atuan (1971), and The Farthest Shore (1972). These books describe the adventures of a wizard named Ged, as a boy and adult, in the imaginary land of Earthsea. Le Guin continued the story in the novels Tehanu: The Last Book of Earthsea (1990) and The Other Wind (2001), and in the short-story collection Tales from Earthsea (2001). Sixteen of her other short stories were collected in Changing Planes (2003). She also wrote the fantasy Gifts (2004).

I own more books by Ursula Le Guin than by any other author - twenty five as of mid-2000. My favourite works are from her "classical" period - the Earthsea trilogy and the science fiction novels The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) and The Dispossessed (1975). I might work up the courage to review the last two one day. For more information about Le Guin, see her official site Subjects Titles Authors ...

Why I Dreamed Up The Ekumen
I know what you're thinking, yoz. Does the Web really need another Ursula K. Le Guin site? After all, there are several excellent ones already. Laura Quilter's feminist SF Le Guin site , and Fredrik Petersson's Le Guin's World , just to name two. Well, you've got a point; nonetheless I'm motivated by some mysterious personal need to create my own online tribute to the author whose hauntingly graceful and eloquent explorations of language, time, gender and the nature of reality have so ineluctably shaped my own writing and identity.

Le Guin, Ursula K. The Left Hand of Darkness
If you're going to do Feminist Science Fiction Month, you'd better start out with this one.
I remember getting the Year's Best Science Fiction anthology for Christmas the year I was 14 or perhaps 15, and settling down in my grandparents' living room to read a story by an author I recognized: "Coming of Age in Karhide" by Ursula Le Guin. I was, to say the least, startled. (At that age I was beginning to learn that if I'm startled by what I'm reading I'd better keep going).
"Coming of Age..." and "Left Hand of Darkness" both take place on the planet of Gethen, which has two notable features: first, it is very, very cold. Second, the people who live there are androgynes, biologically neuter for three weeks of each month. The remaining week, they enter "kemmer," a state in which they can become male or female through what Wikipedia refers to as "pheromonal negotiation with an interested sex partner." "No physiological habit is established," writes a fictional anthropologist at the beginning of the book, "and the mother of several children may be the father of several more." This latter thing is what makes the book famousbut to me, reading it 35 years after its publication and ten years after "Coming of Age in Karhide" startled me, it wasn't the most salient aspect of the book.

Ursula Kroeber was born in Berkeley, California, and grew up immersed in legends and myths under the influence of her father, an anthropologist, and her mother, a children's author. She was educated at Radcliffe College and earned a master's degree at Columbia University in 1952. Kroeber then won a Fulbright fellowship for study in France. There she met and married Charles Le Guin, returning with him to Macon, Georgia, where she taught French at Mercer University. In 1964, after writing five unpublished novels, Le Guin published

    A LEFT-HANDED COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
I want to thank the Mills College Class of '83 for offering me a rare chance: to speak aloud in public in the language of women. Maybe we've had enough words of power and talk about the battle of life. Maybe we need some words of weakness. Instead of saying now that I hope you will all go forth from this ivory tower of college into the Real World and forge a triumphant career or at least help your husband to and keep our country strong and be a success in everything - instead of talking about power, what if I talked like a woman right here in public? It won't sound right. It's going to sound terrible. What if I said what I hope for you is first, if only if you want kids, I hope you have them. Not hordes of them. A couple, enough. I hope they're beautiful. I hope you and they have enough to eat, and a place to be warm and clean in, and friends, and work you like doing. Well, is that what you went to college for? Is that all? What about success? Success is somebody else's failure. Success is the American Dream we can keep dreaming because most people in most places, including thirty million of ourselves, live wide awake in the terrible reality of poverty. No, I do not wish you success. I don't even want to talk about it. I want to talk about failure.

Ursula K. Le Guin straddles genres and masters them all
By Mark B. Wilson cience fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, poetry and even children's literature all have at least one thing in common: Ursula K. Le Guin. The prolific author and feminist stands tall in several fields. Among the 60-plus books bearing her name are science fiction milestones (including The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness , each of which won both the Hugo and the Nebula awards), fantasy classics (including A Wizard of Earthsea , the first novel in the Earthsea cycle) and beloved children's books (the best known of which are Catwings and its successors). Here, Ms. Le Guin looks back over her long career, talks about her new novel, The Telling , and contemplates the future of speculative fiction.

    Title Author ISBN
Ursula K. Le Guin's BookExpo America Speech The following is a speech given to a group of booksellers, librarians, and other publishing professionals at an annual industry convention. Some Assumptions about Fantasy It seems very strange to me to fly 4,000 miles to speak for ten minutes at breakfast. To me, breakfast is when you don't speak. At most you grunt. Nothing more than that should be required. I wish I could just grunt at you in a friendly, polite way that meant "Thank you all for being wonderful people who bring children's books to children!" and then sit down among a chorus of moderately appreciative grunts. However.
It was suggested that I tell you things like how I create children's books and why, and how my books are part of my life. That is exactly the kind of subject that I can't even grunt about. I don't know anything about how or why, only about what.
So, what are my books for kids and young adults? All but one of them are fantasies, including the new one, so I will grunt about fantasy.
Some assumptions are commonly made about fantasy that bother me. These assumptions may be made by the author, or by the packagers of the book, or both, and they bother me both as a writer and as a reader of fantasy. They involve who the characters are, when and where they are, and what they do. Put crudely, it's like this: in fantasy, 1) the characters are white, 2) they live sort of in the Middle Ages, and 3) they're fighting in a Battle Between Good and Evil.
