DH Lawrence
There were a boy and two little girls. They lived in a pleasant house, with a garden, and they had discreet servants, and felt themselves superior to anyone in the neighbourhood. Although they lived in style, they felt always an anxiety in the house. There was never enough money. The mother had a small income, and the father had a small income, but not nearly enough for the social position which they had to keep up. The father went into town to some office. But though he had good prospects, these prospects never materialised. There was always the grinding sense of the shortage of money, though the style was always kept up. At last the mother said: "I will see if I can't make something." But she did not know where to begin. She racked her brains, and tried this thing and the other, but could not find anything successful. The failure made deep lines come into her face. Her children were growing up, they would have to go to school. There must be more money, there must be more money. The father, who was always very handsome and expensive in his tastes, seemed as if he never would be able to do anything worth doing. And the mother, who had a great belief in herself, did not succeed any better, and her tastes were just as expensive.

D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930) , English novelist, storywriter, critic, poet and painter, one of the greatest figures in 20th-century English literature. "Snake" and "How Beastly the Bourgeoisie is" are probably his most anthologized poems. David Herbert Lawrence was born on September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, central England. He was the fourth child of a struggling coal miner who was a heavy drinker. His mother was a former schoolteacher, greatly superior in education to her husband. Lawrence's childhood was dominated by poverty and friction between his parents. He was educated at Nottingham High School, to which he had won a scholarship. He worked as a clerk in a surgical appliance factory and then for four years as a pupil-teacher. After studies at Nottingham University, Lawrence matriculated at 22 and briefly pursued a teaching career. Lawrence's mother died in 1910; he helped her die by giving her an overdose of sleeping medicine. In 1909, a number of Lawrence's poems were published by Ford Max Ford in the

Introduction
The D H Lawrence Collections at The University of Nottingham Library form one of the major international research resources for the study of D H Lawrence (1885-1930), the well-known Nottinghamshire born writer, who was briefly a student at University College Nottingham in the early 20th century. The collections include printed editions of his writings, literary manuscripts, correspondence by and about him, a small number of artworks, newspaper cuttings, reports, photographs and a wealth of supporting secondary sources. Researchers now come to Nottingham from all over the world to consult the collections and detailed catalogues of both published and unpublished materials are now available with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund. A range of supporting material related to Lawrence and his work are also provided online to enhance the understanding of his works both for serious students and general readers. These resources do not, at the moment, provide direct access to digital versions of the full texts of his writings or personal papers, nor any critical essays or studies of individual works.

In 1909 a number of Lawrence's poems were submitted by Jessie Chambers, his childhood sweetheart, to Ford Madox Ford, who published them in English Review . The appearance of his first novel, THE WHITE PEACOCK, launched Lawrence as a writer at the age of 25. In 1912 he met Frieda von Richthofen, the professor Ernest Weekly's wife and fell in love with her. Frieda left her husband and three children, and they eloped to Bavaria and then continued to Austria, Germany and Italy. In 1913 appeared Lawrence's novel Sons and Lovers , which was based on his childhood and contains a portrayal of Jessie Chambers, the Miriam in the novel and called 'Muriel' in early stories. When the book was rejected by Heinemann, Lawrence wrote to his friend: "Curse the blasted, jelly-boned swines, the slimy, the belly-wriggling invertebrates, the miserable sodding rutters, the flaming sods, the sniveling, dribbling, dithering, palsied, pulse-less lot that make up England today." During the First World War Lawrence and his wife were unable to obtain passports and were target of constant harassment from the authorities. Frieda, a cousin of the legendary "Red Baron" von Richthofen, was viewed with great suspicion. They were accused of spying for the Germans and officially expelled from Cornwall in 1917. The Lawrences were not permitted to emigrate until 1919, when their years of wandering began.

DH Lawrence: celebrating a literary life
Welcome to the world of DH Lawrence. Here you can explore the life of a great writer, and see how the people and places of Nottinghamshire inspired a miner's son to become one of the 20th century's most important and controversial writers. Even today, more than 70 years after his death, Lawrence remains an enthralling figure. Hailed as a genius by some, labelled an out-of-fashion misogynist by others, he's probably best known for his novels Sons and Lovers and Lady Chatterley's Lover . But he also explored an extraordinary range of emotions and subject matter and was a prolific short story writer, poet, playwright, essayist, translator, painter and man of letters. While you're here, be sure to take our virtual tour of important Lawrence landmarks including the DH Lawrence Birthplace Museum in Eastwood which is just nine miles from Nottingham city centre. And find out about his special relationship with The University of Nottingham , where he studied and which now houses thousands of items including rare first editions, manuscripts, notebooks and personal correspondence.

D.H. Lawrence Lady Chatterley's Lover Lady Chatterley's Lover - Study Guide Sons and Lovers The Rainbow ... Women in Love Introduction
"The Bridge to the Future is the phallus" (Sex, Literature and Censorship (1955)) David Herbert Lawrence was born on September 11, 1885 at Eastwood in Nottinghamshire, the son of a coalminer and a woman who had been a teacher. He spend much of his childhood ill and confined to his bed, on one occasion due to contracting tuberculosis. His parents would argue constantly and Lawrence tended to side with his mother, to whom he grew very close. Living in near poverty his mother was determined that he should not become a miner like his father. Instead she encouraged him academically and Lawrence was persuaded to work hard at Nottingham High School until the age of fifteen when he had to seek employment in a surgical goods factory. This period of his life and his friendship with Jessie Chambers is reflected in Sons and Lovers , a novel published in 1913 and its character Miriam. Saving the necessary £20 fee, Lawrence attained a scholarship to University College, Nottingham where he worked to get a teacher's certificate from 1906 onward. At this time he began writing and produced a first novel

  • I believe a man is born first unto himself- for the happy developing of himself, while the world is a nursery, and the pretty things are to be snatched for, and pleasant things tasted; some people seem to exist thus right to the end. But most are born again on entering manhood; then they are born to humanity, to a consciousness of all the laughing, and the never-ceasing murmur of pain and sorrow that comes from the terrible multitudes of brothers. Every new stroke of civilization has cost the lives of countless brave men, who have fallen defeated by the
