Jump to: navigation search Evelyn Lau traditional Chinese simplified Chinese pinyin Liº Qǐfēn Cantonese Yale : Lau Yee-Fun); (born July 2 ) is a Canadian poet and novelist Lau was born in Vancouver British Columbia to Chinese-Canadian parents, who intended for her to eventually become a doctor. Her parents' ambitions for her were wholly irreconcilable with her own and her family and school lives were generally unhappy. In 1985, at age 14, Lau left home and spent the next several years living itinerantly in Vancouver as a homeless person, mainly sleeping in shelters, homes and on the street and often supporting herself by selling her body to much older men. Despite the chaos of her first two years' independence she submitted a great deal of poetry to journals and received some recognition. A diary she kept at the time was published in 1989 as Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid . The book was a critical and commercial success. Topics and individuals discussed in the book include some of Lau's various relationships with manipulative older men, the life and habits of a group of anarchists with whom she stayed immediately after leaving home, Lau's experiences with a couple from Boston who

"When I'm writing I don't think about whether the story is going to be happy or unhappy. That is how I see that particular kind of relationship working out. The logical conclusion, to me. And so, it isn't happy. But I don't know if that'll change. I suppose none of my stories have ever had happy endings. Sometimes ambiguous endings. But I don't set out to write an unhappy story or a happy story." When the camera comes out, it's like a curtain drops. Gone is the engaging woman-child that I've feel I've come to know a little bit over the two-odd hours we've been talking. She has been replaced with the pouting artiste. Is it a pose or just protectiveness? I'm not sure. I only know that it prevents me from sharing her smile with you. And I'm a little sad about that: Evelyn Lau has a wonderful smile.
Lau has a lot to smile about. A difficult beginning has provided generous fodder in a career that thrives on challenges. Lau's first book, Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid was published in 1989 and was based on the then-fledgling-writer's experiences as a teenage prostitute. Subsequent volumes have often been based on the writer's less-than-savory first hand glimpses of the human experience.

    Publisher's Synopsis (Doubleday)
Moving seamlessly through past and present, Lau describes how her complex, painful relationship with her parents has shaped her adult desires, thwarting her efforts to connect with both men and women. She recalls her dangerous battle with bulimia and examines her continued struggle against crippling depression. ...
Above all, Lau considers her life as a writer, .... She reveals the supreme importance she has come to place on her writing and explains her controversial willingness to breach the boundaries between public and private in the name of art.

Work
About Evelyn Lau Evelyn Lau has written seven books, including the bestselling short-story collection Choose Me. Her first book, Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid, was published in 1989 when she was eighteen; it became a Canadian bestseller and was published internationally. In 1992, Lau became the youngest poet ever to be nominated for the Governor General’s Award, and in 1999, she received a Woman of Originality Award. Evelyn Lau lives and works in Vancouver. http://www.thebukowskiagency.com/Inside%20Out.htm GUNEW: I write about Evelyn Lau in a chapter of my new book (Gunew 2003). What I suggest about her is that she represents a new departure in terms of the 'confidence' (if that is the right term) of Canadian writers who come from non-Anglophone or non-Francophone backgrounds. While Lau is of Chinese descent she refuses to write about her 'ethnicity' preferring instead to mine the terrain of what has been dubbed 'dirty realism' or urban realism. Lau writes about sexuality, prostitution, sexual relations but not about ethnicity. http://faculty.arts.ubc.ca/sgunew/LEUNG.HTM

    Evelyn Lau
Evelyn Yee-Fun Lau was born in Vancouver on July 2, 1971 to Chinese immigrants. The parents were obsessively ambitious on behalf of their children (there is a younger sister), demanding constant top performance at school tests and expecting their eldest daughter, Evelyn, to become a medical doctor. When she reached the age of ten things got even worse as her father became unemployed and withdrew into emotional passivity - "... one of the most traumatic events in my childhood," Evelyn Lau later recalled. She had been closely attached to her father, her source of protection from the neurotic mother. Writing was her means to psychological survival. Lau claims to have been conscious of her urge to become a writer since she was six. In 1983 (age 12) she began publishing poems and short stories in 'little magazines'. Early in 1986 she ran away from her unbearable existence as a social outcast in school and a suppressed, unloved daughter at home. She took up the life of a drug abuser and prostitute in Vancouver - living mostly at social institutions and chronicling in a a diary her psychologically battered life and her struggle as an emerging writer. The manuscript became a bestseller when it was published in 1989 under the title
